IF jyu,
Very well said: "belated Gaijatra."

This one looks like the preaching of the preach to the preaching...a totally political tamasha garbed as "Social Science." Interesting times!

On the topic of playing the China card:

Plans are firming up for the Reproductive Health Congress in Beijing. Our travel itinerary should be confirmed within the next two or three days. I am definitely looking forward to doing a Sino-Sajha Summit on the side in Beijing before this month is over. It is very fortunate that you have a break after Sept 28. Please do check into any good deals you might find for Inner Mongolia and the grasslands, I am all excited about the date with the Great Khan's grand daughter. She awaits her prince in shining amour!

What is the best way to travel from Datong to Shanghai? How long will it take on the train? Will the airfare be expensive? If it does not take more than 12 hours, I would not mind taking a train.

If you have time, could you also check out a good Chinese opera in Beijing? I think it will be a shame not to do one while in China. Any other interesting side tips you can think of?

By the way, how cold is it going to be there in early October? Should I bring in heavy clothing? Please advise on this, I generally like to travel light. I hope I don't have to carry any thick jackets and heavy boots. But then, I could always borrow the sheepskin from the Khan's daughter!

See you soon!

>>>>a totally political tamasha garbed as "Social Science."

I have noticed that in Nepal, the phrase "social science" is used more by journalists (who seem to have a puzzling fetish for all things classified as "social science") than by social scientists themselves!!

Still, as historian Pratyoush Onta asked recently: For all of Himal Media's (and in particular Kanak's) obsession with talking about the importance of social science research and how such research is putatively going to better our understanding of contemporary issues, why is it that their flagship fortnightly publication -- Himal Khabar Patrika-- RARELY devotes a single page to reporting about social science research?

You sound like Gambhir Man from that old SLC English textbook :-)

Let me do a guessing game:
CK LAL = No alternate to reinstating parliament
Hari Roka = Anything short of bringing Maoists in mainstream politics can not solve the crisis.
Krishna Khanal = Reinstatement of parliament is best for current situation
Narahari Acharya = Parliament and he will not forget to mention about constituent assembly
Sarita Giri = Constituent assembly and federal nepal can solve the problem
Subhas Chandra Nembang = In GOLMAL tone he will put forward the concept of all party interim government.

I may be totally incorrect. I hope someone attending the program will stop by here to brief the event.

***
Reinstatement of Parliament alone may or may not solve the Maoist problem. Must probably, no!
But, had there been parliament:
* An elected PM would not have to leave the office just by a recorded TV broadcast.
* A man who lost election could not have seen the PM's office.
* A bunch of self-declared politicians would not have been minister without even appearing in the election.
* A man with few parliamentarian and who was not supported even by his own party would not have become a PM.
* Those incapable ministers and bureaucrats who created such a mesh in Bhutanese refugee issue would not have been spared unquestioned in a 'democratic' country. (Ironically, the Bhutanese Minister was grilled in the parliament even when the decision was in their favor and the country is known as undemocratic country.)

SC,

October isn't that cold here in Beijing, but its a good idea to bring along a few sweatshirts and a windcheater (sp??), and a light jacket. I looked around and found a good deal to go to Inner Mongolia. Train tickets, 3 start hotel room, food + sightseing+ horseback riding for just 600-750 Yuan (80-100 USD). I'll be gettinmg a phone soon and I'll definately email you my no. Call me once you get here. As for Chinese opera and authentic Peking duck, don't worry, I will be taking you to the best places for those.

Ahem ahem SCjyu--

perhaps i should plan to attend the conference as well.
Good luck on your participation, and let us know how it goes! ;)

Ashujyu, may not go to the discussion but am in Nepal...will get in touch with you soon.

suva chintak Posted on 14-Sep-03 09:39 AM

najar jyu,
Appreciate your blessings for our reproductive congress, we will need everything we can get to make a respectable showing! Last weekend we actually had a mock session in the picturesque town of Pautuckett, Rhode Island. Given we started preparations just two months ago, our performance was not too bad. Old hands were impressed. But then, we will be in totally different 'waters' in China, so we will see how it goes. As you can imagine, things are quite 'fluid'!

It would be wonderful if you could attend the conference...I am sure that would boost our morale significantly. You would also have the rare privilege of having our budding China scholar IF jyu escort you to the best places in that wonderful country. So hop onto the Shanghai flight...Royal Nepal jindabad (Republican friends, no offense intended !).

I will definitely brief you about the proceedings once I am back. I am glad you are back in Krantipuri nagari, as long as you remember to duck, you should be OK.

Ashujyu,

You comment about Gambhirman made me laugh...In a way I am in the same predicament. Excited about visiting this wonderful civilization, yet unsure of what to expect. But IF jyu is there, I think he will mute the cultural and climatic shock!

Ni hou...how are you!
Xi Xi....thank you!

This is my language preparation so far. Can anyone add another useful phrase? Like how do you say "Miss, you are beautiful" ?

dogz, no thank you for now!
