Comon, if it was flat you would have again asked why it is flat and not round?
It was nice of the Italian pope to house arrest Gallielio the originator of the idea that the earth is round. Now the Vatican is saying he was rewarded by easy life in house confinement with servants to serve him, so that he could better unearth the facts by being in confinement rather then get confused by all the flat lands around him.

What is the Earth's shape?
The Earth is flat. It is shaped in the form of a pentagon, and thus has five corners.
What about Earth's Gravity?

I think the earth is round... yes, it is. When you fly from Kathmandu to New York, your plane goes higher up so that it does not hit the curvature of earth. Then when it is in the US, it goes down.. eheheh........
But is earth really round???

Are elephants pink? Well, I saw them pink in my dreams. Are dreams colored? who cares, but elephants are pink. Just because you saw dem in those zoos and jungles dont' mean elephants cant be pink. How do you know my dreams are not real. Its an illusion? how do u know reality is not an illusion?

When it comes to scientific claims, the Bible has the dumbest claims, with all due respect to Jews and Christians. The Bible claims that Earth has four ends and four corners. Nobody can ever think a ball or a cycle to have corners and ends! Only flat items can have corners and ends, and this is exactly what the bible is trying to express regarding the shape of the earth. The earth is not flat, as once thought and it has no corners or ends at all. If Magnetic Poles can be taken as ends or corners of earth, then this definitely opposed to the axis of rotation.

The earth is as flat as a pancake, and if you don't believe it you are just another dirty atheist. At least that is what Sheik Abdel-Azi Ibn Baaz, the supreme religious authority of Saudi Arabia, says. The blind cleric made this pronouncement over 9 years ago.
It seems that this cleric hasn't caught up with the pope, science-wise. John Paul II reversed the Roman Catholic condemnation of Galileo 11 years ago, in 1992.

That is how i have felt at times................maybe a little too often.
The shape of the Earth to can be kept secretly to your notion, without having to prove it to the world, who might very well have its own secret notions.
Talking about proving, i need to get to class, (math proof) where a bewildered professor tries to prove to me (in vain for the most part) why x equals x and why if x=y then y=x, using the most bizzare and incomprehensible symobls possible...
Once again, keep an eye out for a chicken flying across the skyline....

And to continue with the shape of the world....nobody really knows anything about the true shape. The known, inhabited world is flat. Just as a guess, I'd say that the dome of heaven is about 4,000 miles away, and the stars are about as far as San Francisco is from New York.
And the sun and moon are only about 32 miles in diameter. They circle above the earth in the vicinity of the equator, and their apparent rising and setting are tricks of perspective, like railroad tracks that appear to meet in the distance. The moon shines by its own light and is not eclipsed by the earth. Rather, lunar eclipses are caused by an unseen dark body occasionally passing in front of the moon.

The origionator of thread said "earth" not world. Well, world is also bi-meaning world, it reprsents earth, perifery of land, water and air, if you understand in physical sence and it represents perifery of thoughts, memory and consiousness if you understand psychologically.
Let me answer the question as per my knowledge:
Why is the earth round?
Earth was a piece of sun. It was hot, as hot as Sun. As sun contains Hydrogen gas which is constantly converting to helium gas. This process is called nuclear reaction. The energy released in this nuclear reaction is heat and light, that we observe. I mean the earth, as a piece of sun was also containing hydrogen fuel constantly burning to helium. Since Hydrogen and Helium both are fulids, they undergo surface tension. Surface tension is the phenomena of fluid which cause fluid(gas and liquid) to have least surface area. Eg: Oil drop, mercury drop, water drop any liquid drop all are spherical (ball like) in shape. sphere has lowest possible surface area. This is the reason why all stars and suns takes spherical shape because they contain these two gases. Later on other nuclear reaction takes place and other elements are formed (I don't want to go in detail). Gases converts to liquids and liquid solidifies becomes solid. Planets takes their spherical shape while they were in fluid state though they are solid. Inside earth there is still liquid, you know the larva that comes from Volcano, right.

Le me tell you histry.
Hindus scholar (India) thought that sun rotates round the Sumaru Mountain (mithological mountain). The earth is flat and Sumeru mountain is in the centre of the ocean. the ocean is surrounded by land. They were not true.
Then Aristatol (Greek) did an experiment with a round bread and lamp and concluded that Earth is like bread and its earth which is rotating round the sun. The day and night is filpping flop of bread like earth.
Then Arabian Scholar did an experiment. They took a boat far far away form a tall lamp post. Then they come back to the post. They could not see the post in the biginning. Then they bigin to see its top. as they came closer closer they keep seeing down and down the post and finally the bottom. They concluded that they were sailing in a couved ocean not in flat ocean. so form this experiment, the earth must be spherical.
Then Science went to Europe, Gallio Gallie geometrically showed that earth is spherical. to prove this he took the help of moon and sun n their position. So whole credit goes to him.
Later on U Ri Gagrin, first spaceman saw the beautiful planet earth from the space. He took photo and it was beautiful green sphere like marble.
After this Neil Armstrong see this holy planet form moon, it was also spherical. NASA scientist are taking photo of this wonderful planet in every second ( thats why you get weather updates in every minutes). See how beautiful sphere it looks.
There are thousands of satellites in the space, they also send photo, which looks perfect sphere.

do you know why do you feel flat? i have answer. The curvature is big compare to your dimension. so you can not see the curve. imagine, a long ring of 1m diameter. make 100 equal pieces of the ring each 1cm. You will notice each piece is straight.

hey son of Nepal, you are right body. Its ellipsoid, its not perfectly spherical. This is due to spinning motion of the earth. earth spins about north south axis. So the centripetal force in less in polar area and least in the pole where as it is maximum at the equater. Because of this force more matter is collected in the equator than polar area. This makes equator buldged out which gives ellipsoidal shape. Ellipsoid is little distorted sphere.
i guess, I am misusing my weekand.

...and to the sheer disappointment of Sitara, who truely believed the pentagon theory, a new study has found that earth is not round, flat, triangular or pentagonally shaped, but instead, it is shaped like a banana covered by a protective shell.
They don't believe idiotic things such as the earth spinning around the sun. Reasonable, intelligent people have always recognized that the earth is in shape of a banana and everybody in New Zealand knew it.

But haven't almost all of us gone through these theories and hypotheses in our school and college years at one point or another?
