Pillion riding banned in Valley Fearing Maoist attacks, local authorities have banned pillion riders in a motorcycle or scooter from September 17 to 23 in the entire Kathmandu Valley, an announcement said. According to separate-but-similar notices issued by the District Administration Offices of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, the decision was taken for security reasons. "Incidents of murder, bombing and attacks are growing in the Valley. It is mainly seen that two masked men come on a bike and shoot or hurl bombs. Hence a new traffic rule has been introduced," said the notices. The local authorities have also banned the bike riders from covering their faces with masks while driving. The bikers are further disallowed to cover their faces with the helmet glasses. Similar traffic rules were introduced in Pokhara on Monday. nepalnews.com mr Sept 16

Dautari, Yes, they can be serious. Government has the right to restrict the liberty of its peopole to assure safety and security in the time of crisis. There is no stopping point in terms of what government will have the authority to phohibit, as long as it is excercised towards the physical or moral welfare of its peopole. The consequence could be that virtually anything which anyone holds of most value may become prohibited to them in grounds of its being judged immoral or dangerous to others or themselves. Security should be the utmost priority in times of crisis.

dautari, Exactly, that's what I was talking to my friend. Here goes my story. There were two masked men who came riding a kawasaki bajaj mobike. The pillion rider pulled the trigger, finished off the victims and then zoom -bhroom they were gone in a second. From the next day pillion riders became extinct. I learned that the KTM valley traffic police office had come out with a dikkat: no more pillion riders on the streets anymore, from this day onwards you all will ride alone on your mo-bikes.Not even wives, girlfriends and children were allowed. The pillion rider ouster dikkat was followed by another one.Not even after two hrs had passed since the first dikkat came into effect we were thrust with another one:no more mo-bikes on the streets. A masked mo-bike rider had despatched his enemy. We complied. The next day some unmasked men came in a cab, hurled bombs and killed their prey. So cabs were called off the street from that day. Yesterday a man was walking down this crowded street in Asan Tole. Someone shot him to death from behind. I am afraid that we will not be allowed to walk on the streets any more.
