NK It looks like a false alarm. The entire leadership must be captured to make a dent in this murderous campaign. The Maoists are totally driven by the ideology. I still am a believer of a negotiated settlement but not the kind they want: one party communist state. No way. But, they will not negotiate. They want to achieve their goal either through a CA by ramming through their agenda. The CA members will simply flow with the momentum like in Germany with Hitler or in the US with Bush regarding the Iraq war. Very few will dare to oppose them. They will give them whatever consitition they want. Some will be bought and others will simply cave in because of the fear of bodily harm. No one would like to be labeled as a counter-revolutionary. The other way they will try is to make the King (Army) and the political parties buckle under the pressure. The silent majority will remain silent. A political force, interested in a political participation, would have never gone on a murderous spree. You cannot win the hearts and minds of people by killing left and right. They are up to something: I think, they have made a decision: either a tactful control of the CA and a totalitarian constitution or a march into the valley with a victory smile. They don't have election in mind. They have lost a lot of political capital to win any fair and peaceful election. When they came to Kathmandu and shook hands with a bunch of intellectual idiots, they were wearing a mask. Now the mask is gone, and they have declared their intention. I hate to say this, but the only solution of Nepali democracy and liberty is in the hands of India. The last line of defence --the RNA-- cannot sustain a high and trechorous terrain gurrila warfare without a massive air and ground power. India will not be allowed to stand by (by the US; Rocca' speech) to see this poor country fall in the hands of a radical Maoist regime. The only question is how many people like the one who was hanged and beheaded will have to be expended before people begin to realize that the country is turning into an Asian Liberia. |

BBC's version : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/3112454.stm Police in Nepal have charged 21 Maoist rebels, including their leader, Prachanda, with assassinating the chief of armed police earlier this year. Krishna Mohan Shrestha was shot dead in the capital shortly before the government and rebels declared a ceasefire, which broke down last month. If convicted, the accused men could be jailed for life. The filing of charges came as the rebels urged people to take part in a general strike to begin on Thursday. The BBC's Sushil Sharma in Kathmandu says several such cases have been pending against Maoist leaders since the rebel insurgency began in 1996. The three-day shut-down is aimed at increasing pressure on the government to accept a key rebel demand for a constituent assembly to draw up a new constitution. Disagreement on the issue caused the breakdown of recent peace talks. |

Nepalipanda, I agree with you, I think you said it very eloquently. I think now it is not simple to solve this problem, because blood is in hands of many. But, I think economic reform is the ultimate long term answer, and people should not wait for the situation to improve to work on economic reform. All we have to think of is a way to isolate the situation. Concentrate in restoring some areas, keep it as 'peace zone' and make it economically, socially and politically prosper. Once that is in place (you don't have to wait for it's full prosperity), winning the hearts and minds of others in neighboring areas will be easier. And it will spread to other areas. That means, it is kind of 'reverse Maoism engineering' if I dare put that way. Hare Ram!!! ( I can't do anything more, but, I can shed few drops of my tears for Late Khadka, his brave wife and three innocent children and many many other children who did not have to go through this during young age! God will give them strendth). |

i disagree on the india point, panda. however, i'd be happy to read rocca's speech, if you'd kindly provide a link. also, the first and last line of defense will always be the nepali people themselves. i agree with most of the rest of your statements. |

"Bhutan and New Delhi are to launch joint military operations in Bhutan to smash rebel camps belonging to separatists from India's northeastern provinces, a report said today." Smart move, Bhutan! Way to go, before the rebels start putting on the masks to be the champions of the poors and start dreaming the big dreams --Constituent Assembly for the purpose of capturing the Kingdom to start a revolutionary federation. What a decisive move by the Bhutanese leadership. |

Folks, Please don't spread such rumors that our The Only Great Revolutionary Leader Prachanda has been arrested. All the closet and part-time Maoists like us will loose our sleep, we don't like to hear such reactionary, autocratic, corrupt crap about our leader. Our leader is safe and sound! |

Suva Chintak I don't think it is even funny to claim yourself being a maoist. If you really are a maoist then may all the curse be bestowed to you. If not, go get a life and stop making fun of the deads. |

Suva Chintak, why do you think Prachanda is a great leader? i've heard that maoist kill innocet people, use human sheld to attack police and Army posts, kill teachers in villages, kidnap people, kill parents of little children, use children to block the bullets from army. I think Prachanda is evil. Let me know your opinion. Sankaa |

Sarbapratham ta yesh topic ma bhaag linu huney sapurna mitrabandhu haru lai mero 10 aunla ko koti koti namaskar cha !!!!!!!!!!. Bishesh Nepalipanda ji lai swadilo posting post garey baapat mero chadke salaam !!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chinese Character for rice ("fan") consists of two radicals :one is for food ,the other for revolt . Without the radical of food ,there will be revolt .Only when everybody has basic neccessities can a country start developing luxuries .This includes democracy. What good is democracy when the result is everybody has a say but is poor ? That is why all countries ,like Nepal ,should focus on economic growth before they focus on democracy .In fact ,economic growth will eventually benefit whole soceity ,including the poor .Only then can democracy function effectively. Democracy is based on the ideal of "majority rules"or that everybody can have a say. However ,it would be impossible for Nepal to come out of the poverty if it focuses on democracy . Take the right to vote .Not everybody in Nepal has sufficient education to choose and vote for what is right for the nation .In fact Nepal's literacy rate is around 33%.which means more than 16 million people cannot read and write .Does this population have the ability to vote for what is right for the country ??It is fair to say those who are not educated are more likely to believe persuasive candidate . This is especially so when the country is suffering from economic doldrum .That is how Hitler came to power .Pushpa kamal dahal aka Prachanda is modern day Nepali Hitler. |
