A message from the Nepalis at Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello everyone, Dashain is round the corner and here we are, on the other side of the globe from our homeland. Well, there is nothing we can do about that but we surely can have fun here with masu, bhaat, and momocha. After the grand success of the Dashain gathering last year and the year before at Swarthmore, Nepalis at Swarthmore, Brynmawr and Haverford are hosting the Dashain-Tihar gathering once again this year on October 11, 2003 and hope you will be able to join us! The details are as follow: Second Dashain-Tihar Gathering of all Nepalis in Pennsylvania ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: October 11-12, 2003 (Saturday and Sunday) Location: Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, PA. (11 miles outside Philadelphia) Transportation: There is a SEPTA train station right on campus. You will have to take R3 going to Media/Elwyn. It takes about 20 minutes to get here from 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. There is a train every hour. For detailed info on the SEPTA schedule and stops, you can visit http://www.septa.org/riding/rail.html.The fare is $3.75 each way. If you let us know what time you will arrive at Swarthmore, one of us will come to pick you up at the train station. Swarthmore College is located at 500 College Ave., Swarthmore, PA 19081. Evening: We have planned a cook-out dinner. We have reserved a big dorm kitchen that we used for the last two years gathering. After dinner, we will watch movies, make momo, listen to the rhythms, play Deusi, and of course dance. Dinner: This is going to be the biggest thing of the day. If you can help us cook, that would be great. Or else, don't blame us if the food is bad! Anyway, if you can, we would appreciate if you could come a bit earlier and help us cook. Accomodation: We have arranged accommodation at the college if people want to stay overnight. (on a side note, our guests in the past have been very considerate and have not minded staying overnight drinking, chating, playing games or dancing) Sunday morning: We will cook lunch, continue having fun and disperse by the afternoon, or earlier if people want to. Money: You will be responsible only for your transportation to and from Swarthmore. The rest is on us. We will be delighted to have you as guests! Please forward this invitation to any college-going, fun-loving Nepali in United States. For more details, please email Shlesha or Yubraj at nepali@sccs.swarthmore.edu. Cheers, Nepalis at Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr and Haverford PS: Those of you who were here last year, we promise you, the music will be much better than it was last year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All Sajhaities are especially invited. Consider it a Chule Nimto! :) |

Thanks, psychodreamer, boke and lonely for responding to the thread. Akaash, To answer your question, Swarthmore is a small liberal arts college with 1450- students. The yearly total cost of attending the college comes out to be around 39000, way above what most of us can afford to pay. I am on aid, as are other Nepalis here. From what I know, the financial aid is not need-blind. Acceptance rate is low. This college, ranked third among liberal arts colleges by the US News, does not usually provide aid to international transfers. If you are a US citizen, or a green card holder, perhaps you can try and be on the Dashain-Tihar gathering organizing team next year. :) Even if there are restrictions because of which you can not apply to Swarthmore, feel free to email us should you decide to come to Philly-area for a tour or something. It will be nice to meet you. M.P. |

Dear Swatties, It is excellent to learn that you are keeping up one of the traditions of Nepalese at Swarthmore by organizing another Dasain gathering. I do expect to make it to the one this year. I look forward to seeing you all. Regards, Pukar |
