Senators Support Legislation to Improve Higher Education Opportunities for Immigrants
Wednesday September 3, 12:16 pm ET
Press Conference to Include Members of Congress, Immigrant Students

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of Congress will unite with immigrant students from across the U.S. next week to urge Congress to pass legislation, which will enable immigrant students to realize their dreams of going to college. A bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives led by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), the original sponsors of the DREAM Act, will be joined by immigrant students, representatives of community-based organizations and university administrators at a press conference on Sept. 4 on Capitol Hill to call for support for this bill.
In the Senate, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act (S.1545) would allow states to provide in-state college tuition to undocumented students who grew up in the U.S., and provide a path for students to become legal permanent residents. In the House, Reps. Chris Cannon (R- Utah), Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.) introduced similar legislation known as the Student Adjustment Act (H.R. 1684).

The press event is a part of the United We DREAM Campaign, an advocacy effort being held in Washington, DC on September 3-4. During their two day visit, students will be hosted by Members of Congress and participate in Hill visits to raise awareness about the obstacles they face in pursuit of higher education.

The United We DREAM Campaign is sponsored by a broad coalition of national and local advocacy organizations, including the Center for Community Change, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the National Immigration Law Center, the National Council of La Raza, the National Association for Bilingual Education, the League of United Latin American Citizens, People for the American Way, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
