KOL hacked by Maoists?
lonely Posted on 24-Sep-03 11:57 AM

looks like that.....

when did this happen??

Binay Posted on 24-Sep-03 12:24 PM

I was surprised too. KOL was fine until this morning. Is it really hacked or someone just put "www.insof.org" in the redirection tag by mistake. Looks like the intruders got lucky with the recent changes in KOL (i.e., php based server). It is also possible that the Maoists connection in Belgium and Germany is getting stronger. I saw news on Nepal Samacharpatra other day that the Maoist portal http://www.cpnm.org was blocked for a few days by the government. Don't know how accurate the news was.
mickthesick Posted on 24-Sep-03 01:09 PM

yep.......looks like maoists don't have only laymen working for them.......they've been able to gather some brilliant men too......nice to know that.
Gaz Posted on 24-Sep-03 01:19 PM

punte Posted on 24-Sep-03 01:50 PM

They have support from foreign terrorist and hakers, I think this is done from outside of Nepal. It is most likely from Geremany or some east European countries where there is no lack of hackers and supporters of communist.

Be careful San.........Sajha could be next..These mao's are against peace and free living and free expression.
skh003 Posted on 24-Sep-03 01:51 PM

Yeah its night time in Nepal, they wouldnt know until morning. Lets wait and see for few couple of hours. Any Sajhaites in Nepal, please do inform the KOL people.
placid_cruelty Posted on 24-Sep-03 04:12 PM

I guess they found out. it goes to the "Cannot find server" page.
dautari Posted on 24-Sep-03 04:39 PM

Well, it could also be a prank by a hacker. The hacker may or may not have links with the maoists.
kranti Posted on 24-Sep-03 04:51 PM

Hello,
Very interesting. Go and listen to some of the musics there. These guys are brilliant. How are they able to compose music (and tats nice too!!). I admire the changes they are bringing to the Nepali society. If they stop killing the individuals, I will go to Nepal and vote for them..

Thanks..

Sometime ago, the news was that Maoists are starting three FM Radio stations. About a year ago, some foreign trekkers reported that they had run into Maoists up in the hills who could speak English French, German and even Japanese fluently.

A few weeks ago, when an internet poll, by a large majority, said that BRB should be the next PM, I sort of had an inkling that Maoists were/are active on cyberspace, thereby -- to me, any way -- chilling the whole idea of freedom of expression and giving rise to self-censorship.

Still, this Kantipuronline hacking could be either someone's idea of a joke or that Maoist hackers are asserting themselves in a big way.

Cry, the beloved country!!

Just spoke to a senior person at Kantipur Publications. The person said that they've known about the hacking since midnight (Nepal time), and have been trying to fix it through their techies. Further said that the site should be up shortly.

ant.mon Posted on 24-Sep-03 09:32 PM

Techies of KOL claimed that the site has been hacked from Nepal. They have traced the IP intruding to KOL server, they are discussing with people holding this dedicated IP since this morning. If it is true then, hackers delibrately wants them to be identified. Lets see how the scene develops later in the afternoon.

Kantipur Online condems attack of its site

As you are well aware, Kantipur Online, the official web site of Kantipur Publications was hacked this morning by unknown group. The first attempts to hack our site were first made yesterday (24th September 2003). We were however, able to rectify the problem then but was subsequently hacked again during the early hours of Thursday morning. We are still working to bring the services back to normal.

Kantipur online is a service-oriented site, which provides news about Nepal to millions of people living around the world. And we condemn strongly attempts to curb that right of the people to be informed. We consider this attack on our site as an attack against the entire free press in Nepal in whatever form. Attack on Kantipur online comes at a time when journalists around Nepal are facing increasing threats to carry out their duties impartially. We also call on the entire journalist community to unite against such cyber crime.

How do you all know that Maoists did this hacking business? Do you have any iota of proof to corroborate your accusations? As Ashu said somebody might have done it for the heck of it.
Ruby Posted on 25-Sep-03 01:55 PM

The 29 of May, a protest in support of the people's War in Nepal and against the "pax americana" took place in Ravenna, Italy. The protest was organized by the proletari comunisti (communist proletarians) and the Comitati Solidarietà Nepal (Nepal Solidarity Committees).

Activists of such organizations, together with other people from democratic and progressive parties and forces, rallied in front of the Halliburton factory in Ravenna (company owned by the US Vice-President Dick Cheney).

There they put banners on the gates of the factory and had a speech exposing the imperialists, their global war and fake "peace" and the labelling the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the people's war it leads as "terrorist".

At the end of the protest, the protesters burned a stars and stripes flag. This action was part of a national mobilization day in support of the people's war in Nepal called by the Comitati Solidarietà Nepal and the proletari comunisti organization. As part of this mobilization day, meetings and other initiatives have been organized in Torino, Milano, Trento, Taranto and Palermo.

In these meetings has been presented Nepal- Guerra Popolare (Nepal Peoples War) the new national-spread information sheet published by the Comitati solidarietà Nepal. You find attached the heading and picture about the action in Ravenna issued by the main local newspaper.

It was mentioned in one of the postings that the hacking attempt at the KOL was coming from some specific IP address and that it seemed that the hackers wanted to make themselves knows.

SO WHO WERE THOSE HACKERS. WE HAVE NOT GOT ANY MORE INFORMATION ON THAT MATTER.
