From your language, one can guess that you are a maoist sympathiser. Majority of us are against the violent means you are using. If the changes happen with the consent of majority, I suppose all of us accept it. The problem is- you are using guns to force your alien ideology on us, and the ideology which has failed everywhere else in the world. We have seen the negative impact of the civil war on our economy. The so called employment by Maoists would certainly not pay for the education of the children as they themselves are destrying all the schools and infrastructure.People would not gain any useful skills. Because of the war, people have literally burried their properties and consequently there is less ciculation of wealth. We have become poorer and will continue to do so thanks to you. Certainly some in the Maoist group have become rich overnight with the looted money. Also, for the war, millions are spent in weapons. Maoists would have to spend much more as they would have to buy in black market. The money goes to foreign hands as the expertise is not there at all in Nepal. The educated and skilled people want to leave the country for security reasons. In lots of villages, hordes of people particularly males have left the villages. This is certainly not going to have any positive impact on economy. You can think and make out your own logic. My thinking is the Maoist problem is a power struggle. Some smart people (leaders) are exploiting the poor and using them as means to get to power. The politicians do that everywhere all the time, but the sad thing is killing of so many innocent people just because you don't like them.

THEY have terrorised police, government officials and ANYONE opposed to their call for a republican government and sweeping reforms. Their writ runs across more than one-third of the country and they can call a countrywide bandh at the drop of a hat. AT PRESENT, the major problem what our country ppl facing, which is none other than "UNEMPLOYMENT" Hence, Govt. and other RESPONSIBLE factors should create an oppertunity for JOB so that our SARBA SADHARAN NEPALI JANTA can engage, and UNEMPLOYMENT RATE will gradually diminish. If this happens, then their would be no existence/presence of THEM and no Problem.

Bored2Death, You have brought here a very thought provoking issue. The question you have raised indeed can be a good dissertation topic for anyone wish to venture there. I was thinking of writing an email to you but later abandoned the idea as it usually goes in the mystirious black hole. Actually there are many historical wrongs in the past which is a Herculian task for anyone to unravell the factors that which caused what in the past. I don't deny it, but unemployment is one of the major factor (not only one). That holds true at anywhere anytime. How long do u think to correct those wrongs if there are any? Yes, there need some radical and sweeping change in the system but not in Maoists way. And it is not also in a way where democracy was abused in the last 12 yrs. There r many live history around us from where we can learn good lessons for nation building. One don't have to go all the way to America, Canada, or Australia. Any macroeconomicst can envision where to borrow idea from for nation development. Its so obvious what unemployment brings with it, and it is not only Maobadi problem but other problems like crimes, hunger, poor health, poor environent, decelerated growth, and many others. Vicious circle starts right from there. To curb the unemployment problem the policy people in the past used to use monetary tools such as the one you see in Philippes curve. But the unemployment problem doesn't go away easily than anyone had ever thought. Employment in a country like Nepal was viewd very narrowly such as state creating jobs using/depleting state coffins, but not how productively to use human, natural, foreign capital resources, etc. Sorry, I am not Labor Economics guy. ok! It is just one opinion. If you ask a political scientist or legal expert, he may say the current maobadi problem is due to constitutional flaws in the country, if you ask an environmentalist the same question he may lecture oh, forest depletion, river pollution, blah blah blah. And, if you ask a street kid collecting garbage plastics, he may answer lack of alternative jobs and food is the root cause of the problem, So perception may differs across various quarters of life. Bored2Death further wrote: >>>>>"What are the economic and social costs (if any) to the nation for every extra male or female that is recruited (and provided employment) by the Maobadis?' <<<<<<<<< The type of marginal analysis that you want to do isn't impossible if you are able to get data for it. If you need some help in building a model and estimate them, let me know. But I would go beyond your query. I would have done some kind of longterm welfare analysis there. Few years back I had same inquisitiveness and thought about writing a grant proposal to research it as a hobby. But it would cost tremendously, probably say not less than a million dollar project. If you are still serious about it and wish to adventure on it lets write a joint proposal. There r many donors who are readily willing to fund such a very rare event project. That can be your dissertation topic, and most probably a journal article in AER or JPE or QJE, etc., as well. Keep up brewing some more ideas. Have a nice weekend.
