One of the pleasures of living in Boston was to go to
the plays -- put on by both students and the professionals.
I well remember going to the American Repertory Theater
on Brattle Street for many plays and performances.

Contiuing with that interest, last night, some friends and
I went to see this "naatak" at the Royal Nepal Academy.

The naatak called "Aaaru Ko Fool ko sapana" or "Dreams
of Peach Blossoms" was written by Abhi Subedi, and
directed by Sunil Pokharel. It's about 50-minute-long.

I found the play incredibly boring. You could have shut your
eyes and pretended that the whole thing was a bad
radio drama (you know the one you used to listen to
on the radio in pre-TV nepal on Saturday afternoons!),
and you wouldn't have been wrong.

The language was awful: with flowery words that sounded
wholly unnatural. The characters seemed very underdeveloped,
and I could not understand why most of them were up on the
stgage in the first place.

The story was hopeless . . .supposedly set in ancient
Bhaktapur, and purported to show the "dukha" of some
"naari" . . . you know, full of the usual stereotypes.

Both Sunil Pokharel (especially!) and Abhi Subedi are ususally capable of delivering really good theater. Then again, they are entitled to present bad stuff like this once in a while.

Will not recommend this play to anyone under the age of
30.
