Cheer on your nepal homeboy! Prem Pulami, my husband, will be running the Chicago marathon on Oct. 12. Prem is originally from near Hille and now lives outside of Burlington,Vermont. This is Prem's second full marathon. He is is hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon (in less than 3 hrs, 10 min.) this time around and could use all the support and cheering crowds he can get, especially from fellow Nepalese. He'll be wearing a t-shirt with "running for Nepal" on the front, so look for him! You can also send him e-mails to encourage him at astha97@aol.com.Thanks, guys.
prem_dai Posted on 03-Oct-03 03:04 PM

Thanks for writing this thread. In other thread "Pushkar Shah and $$$$" Elizabeth was trying to project me as the husband of yours. But the truth has come out from yourself.

I would appreciate if you can clarify on the issue Elizabeth raised in that thread, where she claims that she got your apology. To me, it looks like she made up the story.

All the Nepalis are crossing the fingers for Your husband, Prem Pulami, in his endeavors and efforts to highlight the image of Nepal.

Way to go... althgouh Nepalis cannot be there in Chicago... but in thier hearts they are cheering for him. Best of Lucks.
sanobai Posted on 03-Oct-03 03:53 PM

could we please stay on topic here? have no idea what that previous response was about! But by writing about my husband taking part in the world famous chicago marathon, I wish to highlight the achievements of ALL nepalese, not just the ones from the educated, elite classes, the ones who end up at the ivy leagues. The ones from more remote areas, who have accomplished great things in ALL walks of life. I am proud of my husband, Prem, who I have known for 21 years, and he is going to proudly carry the Nepal flag when running on October 12. I do hope many of you in the USA in the chicago area will go out and cheer him on!! The race starts bright and sharp at 8am, and expect to see him cross the finish line about 3 hours and 10 minutes later!
phateko_kattu Posted on 04-Oct-03 12:01 AM

Sanobai,
I wish best of luck to your poi.
Qallu Posted on 04-Oct-03 06:28 AM

Good luck to Prem ji. Running a marathon takes discipline and perseverance and its great that Prem has made it.

But, but, but (sorry in advance if you don't like what i am about to say), Sanobai... the achievement is Prem's and NOT yours. Of course surely you supported him and cheered him along, and are proud of him. I say this because I find that phoren spouses of Nepali people often go around touting their husband or wives' underprivledged or privledged roots to get mileage. They often just seem to want to live off the spouses' greatness or develop a sense of entitlement.
There are a LOT of Nepalis from rural and poor back grounds who do well in life and achieve greatness. I would even go further and say that it seems those are actually the folks who do better because they are more driven and focused and feel like they have to prove something. But when peopole (maybe NOT even the person themself, but for instance, their well meaning spouse with an absurd sense of entitlement) go on touting their background and how, it diminishes the achievement!!! ......so Sanobhai... stop it for Prem ji's sake!!!

Giod luck Prem ji!! We are proud of you!
VincentBodega Posted on 04-Oct-03 06:52 AM

Qalluji,

That didnt make sense at all. Why shouldnt sanobhaiji do what she is doing. How awkward would it be for Premji to come here and tell us all about his run and his achievements. Sanobhaiji is his wife afterall and I think she has every right to be proud of her husband. As you said marathon running takes a lot of discipline and perseverence, and most of us dont have that.
I think its a totally legitimate idea to be able to publicize spunce's achievements if thats worth sharing.
Hats off to Premji and who knows I might be one of those cheering him on. Thanks for letting us know about this Sanobhaiji.

It didn't? Oh well. I guess I was also reacting to sanibai's posting in another thread extolling the virtues of HER "magar husband from around Hile."

Of course she can do whatever she wants. And sharing his achievement is great, but going on at every possible juncture about his humble beginnings... well, it is uncool. It is sort of the same as someone going on about how connected they are.... Because its not Prem ji doing it, but his wife, I thought I'd clue her in that she is not doing him a favor.
phateko_kattu Posted on 04-Oct-03 08:54 AM

I smell Racial profiling in here again .

if Prem pulami is magar .what jaat was sanobai ?someone enlighten me I am all ears .
sanobai Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:02 AM

sanobai is an american born and raised in seattle, washington. I didn't realize it was considered racist to mention which caste my husband is! He is PROUD of who he is, and, by the way, he is NOT from a poor background He holds a masters from tribhuvan and is now studying medicine at the univ. of vermont. I am proud of him NOT because of his coming from a remote area (I was simply stating that to inform people of where he is from, perhaps stupidly thinking there might be others from near Hille on this forum who were interested in that fact!). I also now realize what others have told me-that nepalese people don't want to hear of the achievements of other nepalese. For example, if Nepal would support training many nepali marathoners, they could have a great team go to the olympics, ones who might beat even the Kenyans. But NO....Prem, by the way, is doing this for HIMSELF ONLY, but he is PROUD OF WHERE HE COMES FROM, UNLIKE MANY OF YOU ON THIS FORUM, SO IT SEEMS.

Prem, if you read this, your american wife wishes you the best of luck in your run! This is the LAST TIME I will ever post to this forum. What should have been a simple show of support for my nepali husband has turned into a bunch of stupid young nepalese bashing my intentions and making insensitive and just plain stupid thoughts. Perhaps had I explored this forum better, I would have realized this before posting. It is a crying shame.
sanobai Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:10 AM

quallu, where did I say my husband was from an impoverished background or that he is a Magar? perhaps you deduced that from his name, but it was not stated in my posting. I said he was from Hille. Is that a problem? Is it wrong for someone in nepal to state where they are from? if you are from somewhere other than kathmandu, is that a problem? I am from a small town outside of seattle, washington. Should I be embarrassed to admit that? I find your comments odd and absurd.

Please guys, can't we all go out and support a Nepali marathon runner? I am proud of my husband, as many spouses, no matter what their nationality, are proud of theirs! I thought this was a good forum to let others know if they are in the chicago area to come out and watch prem run, but it is clear I was sorely mistaken. Just as in other threads I have read here, Nepali people seem intent on bashing each other rather than promoting each other. is it any wonder your country is in the mess it is in? none of you can get along!
sanobai Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:42 AM

my apologies. In a previous posting (responding to Ashu's comments about Astha at Harvard), I DID say my husband was a "poor Magar". Yes, he did come from an impoverished background. And, no, he didn't get the advantages of those of you who went to Siddartha Banistali or BKN. Yes, he DID rise above that and not let those of you who would bring him down based on his caste or place or status of birth get him down. He has returned to university here in the USA and proudly runs, NOT to earn acclaim, but because he loves to run marathons and is DAMN GOOD AT IT. Why is it wrong to state a FACT? I had an idea that others in the Nepali community would support him in his endeavors and be proud of one of their own. But, as I stated in my previous posting, having now read some of the other threads, I see I am wrong. Nepalese bashing other Nepalese seems to be the order of the day. I am shocked that anyone would comment that, just because he is from near Hille, somehow he is inferior or lower class. I think that comment speaks volumes about how you nepalese see each other. Personally, I am shocked and saddened for my husband. I had thought better of his fellow countrymen.

kalekrishna Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:50 AM

Sanobai, don't get distracted in your mission to raise support for Prem Pulamiji, who is doing something great not only for himself but also for his country. There will be many instances like this when your genuine effeorts will be seen with a suspicious eyes, but what ever be the distraction keep going.

As for your hubby, thanks to you, your replies and defense of your hubby speaks by itselves. It was not without a reseon some wise old people stade that "Behind every successful me there is a women".
Being myself a semi marathon runner before, I can say it is half physical and half mental game. Hence if the rules of the run permit, pass him ahankerchief on the day of the run, kissed and blessed with your love and if legally accepted drenched in one of his favourite cologne or after shave. After the fifth mile there is a desperate feelings of exhaustion and desperation, ask him to wipe his face with that handkerchief, and all the love, blessings and above all the aroma of his best fragnance will enhance his muscles oxygen taking ability. (In Nepal there was no legal ban to it, but in the US i don,t know). There is now harm in trying if it is legaly permited (some say it is placebo effects).

So, for Pulamiji go we are behind you, and mind you your victory is conjoined with that of your nation which you are so proud of.
Let the good news of success fall on our ears (I mean eyes).
kalekrishna Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:52 AM

sorry typos error, second bottle on the run, and exhausting day of cricket+football games.
sanobai Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:54 AM

bless you, kalekrishna, for your kind words! As for Prem, he says it is between miles 18 and 20 that he hits the wall, and to keep going until mile 26.2 is the real test. But in Chicago, they have what they call the "final five", five bands playing live music to get the runners through the last five miles! for those of you interested in his progress, later I will post his bib # so you can check how he did after the race at www.chicagomarathon.com. This wil be my final posting. I got all worked up by the rather unkind words of one poster, but what's the point? yes, a good woman is behind every man! I am his greatest cheerleader!
phateko_kattu Posted on 05-Oct-03 04:57 AM

I didnt ask you where you were born or where you grew up .As you realise now wherever nepalese go they are the same ."Kuwa Ko Bhyaguta Kuwa Mai "And dont say thats your last post yet as you have failed to mention your original jaat .Failure to disclose your original jaat is the proof itself that you were INDEED racially discriminating Mr.pulami here ,doesnt matter whether he is your husband ,or friend or whatever .And as long as I am alive I wont tolerate this sort of racially charged acts .

Sanobai ,
2 din ke andar andar ,agar tumne apni real jaat humko nahin bataya to mujhse bura kohi nahi hoga !!! aishi jagah tamacha marunga ...hagni aur mutni donoun band ho jayegi !!
sanobai Posted on 05-Oct-03 05:09 AM

ok, now this IS My last post, as I had to laugh at the last poster! my "jaat"? I'm French-Scottish-Cherokee Indian totally BORN IN THE USA American, AND PROUD OF IT!! To all the other members of my french-scottish-cherokee indian american ancestral "jaat" who are runners in the chicago marathon, to all those who are NOT bahun or chettrri, to all those wonderful magars, gurungs, limbus, rais, etc, etc. who just happen to also be marathon runners, I say, be proud of your "jaat", just as I am proud of my ancestry and of where I was born in washington state! Ok, really, enough of this nonsense. Guess i had nothing better to do on a sunday morning than keep posting responses to all you people posting UTTER NONSENSE about charges of "racism"... my response? go out and run a marathon yourself and burn off some of that energy rather than mindless name calling and bashing others! It might do you good!
phateko_kattu Posted on 05-Oct-03 05:33 AM

Mogambo Khush Huwa !!!

Lekin yeh French -scottish -cherokee indian kya hai .yek Maa aur do baap tha kya tumhara ??????? Jhooth bolti hai shaali ???

Now you must have realised why I typed in hindi in my previous posting .Prem pulami ko janta hai achchi tarah se apun .Usko phone ghumake thikana lagaun kya ?

Anyone who is going through this thread have no difficulty knowing you not only as rascist but also a big fat liar .

How many times you said LAST POST ??

everyone wellcome one more indian who is trying to create chaos among nepalese .
KaleKrishna Posted on 05-Oct-03 05:40 AM

Phatekoji, don,t you think you are going far too ahead?
If you have any personal grudge against anyone keep it out of the public forume.
I don't know about others but your last two posting in this thread have diminished the position you held in my..

However, Sanuji, why do you get distracted, may be it was PKji's intention to read more about you and Prem Pulamiji, that you had failed to write clearly in the begining of the thread. Of couse as a proud Neplai we would like to know more about our hero and herione behind his making?
Kaso Kattuji.

Where did I say my husband was from an impoverished background or that he is a Magar?"

and then....

"I DID say my husband was a "poor Magar". Yes, he did come from an impoverished background."

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

"This is the LAST TIME I will ever post to this forum." ahem!! :)

"What should have been a simple show of support for my nepali husband has turned into a bunch of stupid young nepalese bashing my intentions and making insensitive and just plain stupid thoughts."

Thats real nice now isn't it?! Call people names when they don't go along with your plan.....

"Nepalese bashing other Nepalese seems to be the order of the day. I am shocked that anyone would comment that, just because he is from near Hille, somehow he is inferior or lower class. I think that comment speaks volumes about how you nepalese see each other. Personally, I am shocked and saddened for my husband. I had thought better of his fellow countrymen. "

Him being from Hile has nothing to do with nothing! No one said nada about it... you are just trying to make it seem like it.

And please, get off your high horse!! Don't act like you have nothing to do with how people react. The more you talk, the deeper the hole. YOU were the one to bring up Prem's caste/class/origin. No one else did. And that in itself would not have been an issue, except that YOU seem bent on making a big ado about it. No one else. Nepalis of course love to pull each others' legs, but in this one instance, at least on MY part, I was REACTING to YOU and the way YOU were PEDDLING Prem's "poor rural magar" background. In my opinion going on about it only DIMINISHES Prem ji's accomplishments. So thats that. If you still want to rant about how odd and absurd my comments were and need some clarificaltion as to what I MEAN,, let me know. I can try and be clearer.
