Could someone list top ten research universities in Biological Sciences. I know the universities' ranking in general but I want to know if that is true for Biological Sciences as well. Contributions from graduate students or students majoring in Biological Sciences will be valued more than others. Therefore, could you please mention what your major and current level of education when replying to this thread. Thank you very much in advance. |

baba ji, Biological Sciences has become such a vast field now. If you could provide your interests in specific fields, then you can search yourself in USNEWS.COM. If you are looking into these institutions for enrollment, its better to see the faculty researches that interest you rather than the program that's interesting ;). That's what i am told at least. Good Luck! VB jyu, thanx for the link on TSRI :)..It sure is reputed. Leaving that aside, its funny how every university and colleges portraits itself as the top college in US. eheh.....During my orientation a few years back, the V.P. of student affairs gave a thorough speech saying that OUR UNIV. is ONE OF THE BEST IF NOT THE BEST UNIV. IN US. hmmm..having been in US for a few days, I instantly believed it......les say for a week. :), that's when I researched USnews.com, and found out the dreaded truth. It was ranked second (impressive) in a different tier though :( |

Yes, that's called advertizing. Here in the US it doesn't pay to be humble. Just a little fact. Even the biotech. industries are being affected by the recession these days. Celera laid off quite a few workers only a few months ago due to them not being able to boom like they would wish. But I hope things will return to normal soon. As they say, the 21st century is the century of Biotech. I hope they're right about that. Becuase I personally think that America has this proclivity to hype things up when it comes to engineering/science, and this much touted paucity in biotechnology and engineering is just a big lie. |

BV ji ra OC ji lai dherai dherai dhanyabad for the help and Bada Dasaiko subhakamana. Actually I am interested in studying microorganisms and their pathogenicity, specifically host/pathogen interaction in various viral and bacterial diseases. Does any one have anything to help me further. Best, baba |

I dont have all the rankings... The only reason I gave you the link to TSRI, was that I knew they had a pdf version of the listings in Biological sciences. Again as someone pointed out dont just go for the rankings. Most of these big "dawgs" in big schools are just assholes. Write to the faculty and find your match. I believe that finding a research advisor is like a marriage. You have practically live with the person for about five/six years. So make sure you are totally comfortable with the personality of the person and he/she is of yours too. Well thats my spiel on this, dont have to listen to what I say. Good luck |

Baba Ji, Nice to know that you are very interested in Biomedical sciences. As a current graduate student, i might be able to write you something. I think School listings in USNEWS is a good place to start with. Now you can go to their program sites to look what their program like and what they are doing. Since you know which area you are interested in, you can do much more with it. You can look for the faculty who are working in your area, read their research interests and publications. You can search their publications in Pubmed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed).You can even start communication with program director or faculty you are interested. Tell them you are interested in their research and want to know more about. Showing your interest helps a lot. One more thing, research is also about whom you work with and what you did. A lot of good people may not be in these top 10 schools but could be doing very good research. I hope it helps. Please let me know if i can be any more help. Bests, Himal |
