I came across the news on a newspaper some Falun Gong practitioners staged mass suicide at labor camp (with controversial claims that they were killed). What is this Falgun Gong and what makes them so commited to end their light? I am curious to know the evolution of this movement. Could either Biswo or Trailokya throw some light into this Falgun Gong movement in China?

the news can be found in the following link: http://www.tcpalm.com/breaking/world/p0265.shtml

Gandhiji:

Mass suicide, superstition etc are the sign of cult. Falun Gong is
a cult. When I was in China, I heard a lot of superstition about
the efficacy of this cult. I heard that an illiterate lady in
Hongkong converted to Gong, and could read a novel overnight. I
hear a lot of such nonsense. Some even talked about immediate
cure of leprosy by practising Falun Gong.

May be some of these assertions are true. But it is difficult to
believe them.I believe that they have right to practise their
belief, but they don't have right to disseminate such
prevarication, hearsay and medieval belief in the nation of impoverished farmers.

AntiChina media focussed on the student leaders of Tiananmen in
search of alternative force in China. Since none of those leaders
have any influence among Chinese citizen, they found a new hero
in this cult leader Li Hongzi. If he were American, he would be
in prison of Huntsville (Texas) now.

The less we say, the better.

A good source of knowledge on this cult is

www.falundafa.org

English translation of materials supposedly written by Li Hongzi
himself. He talks of all those supernatural ability etc.

All these religious people have one mantra: Human is weakling,
their computer/mind reaches no deeper than mere mundane
shallowness to fathom the intricacy of the universe, and the
creation of whole human mind and existence. So, come to our world
of cultism/religious sectism/etc etc, and you will get relief!

You are an intelligent person yourself. Please read the
document, read the white paper of Chinese govt on the gong, and
decide about them yourself.

Dear all,

I agree with Biswoji. Yes, falun gong is a CULT.

Anyway,

I agree with Biswoji. Yes, falun gong is a cult.

In China, there is a set of synchronous movements called Qi-Gong. Qi gong is a very generic term and refers to as moving one's "qi" (ENERGY) around and balaning ying and yang to stay healthy. tai-Ji, Kung Fu etc are more developed form of qi-gong and are widely practiced in China.

Falun gong is a new school of qi gong. However, in addition to the daily practice of qi-gong, they are also working towards throwing the CCP out of power. This is why, the CCP is worried. And they have every reason to be wary of this new cult. I think the Chinese leadership is more afraid of the numbers of the falun gong supporters than their style of doing qi-gong.

Falun gong is an unregulated civil society and has to be regulated. That's what the Chinese leadership is trying to do. And this has happened in many countries, including the US. The anti-war demonstrations during the vietnam war was also a product of the unregulated civil society and the US government used every means possible to stop those demonstrators. The Chinese are, as I see, merely following the US example.

Thanks Biswoji and Trailokyaji for the link and the brief history of Falun Gong.

This sort of thing reminded me of Adwait Sanstha in Nepal (Swami Kshitishchandra Chakrawarti Maharaj). However, their path is completely different. Adwaitbad believes on the rid off the pain on earth through spiritual healings. I have seen many old people gathering all the time under the shed of Bar-Pipal at a platform (Chautara) and having a day long discussion on the surrow, pains, sins of life and the spiritual way to get rid of them. However, their philosophy is guided from the Hindu Myths and not totally different from Dwaitbad. I have been in few such gathering and have discussions on Karmayoga of Geeta with the seniors.

About Falun Gong, it is absurd. I believe it is some sort of crime. It is to hypnotise people so that they become enough pessimistic to end their life. Afterall, without being hypnotised, how is it possible? People fight with Bedharmi (opposite religion) to protect their culture from invasion and die. But what they get by ending their life?

Sad! very sad! very very sad!

Yes, my objection is: In most of the other cults, often the
apostels dies with the fellow disciples. But Li Hongzhi is famous
and fugitive, while others are being encouraged to suicide(mass?).
This is supercult. This is not a developed form of Buddhism.

I saw one worrying trend in China: the poor population of China
is becoming a fertile ground of proselytizers from all over the
world. Not only I saw Christians inciting disobedience against CCP,
I also saw Mollahs from Arabs/Sudan taking advantage of the
unwitting and tolerant govt officials(believe me) and inciting
the separatists of China. In addition to these two major religions, there are a lot of local bred religions, pseudo-spiritual Gurus,
and crazy practitioners of some occult faiths (Even Hare Ram
Hare Krishna and Rajnish people were seen) all are conspiring
against the CCP in center and spreading seditive message. How the
hell is one legal government is supposed to give all these free
hand? Andthe original Budhdhism is victim of all these frantic
money-induced proselytization.

China has had a history of secret cults and groups. The Boxer Rebellion in 1900 comes to mind. A secret society, known as the Fists of Righteous Harmony, attracted thousands of followers. Foreigners called members of this society "Boxers" because they practiced martial arts. The Boxers also believed that they had a magical power, and that foreign bullets could not harm them. Millions of "spirit soldiers," they said, would soon rise from the dead and join their cause.

Religious faiths have been suppressed for years in the communist era, and as a result superstitions have always held ground among the ordinary people as substitute. Falun Gong managed to dodge the scrutiny of the government as it blended Buddhist and Taoist doctrines and Qi Gong which allowed Li Hongzhi to quickly gain a large following with claims that he could fly in the sky and was immune to bullets!

From a political perspective it is interesting to note the floowing sequence of events:

Li introduced the philosophy to the public only in 1992, within two years after the Tiananmen Incident.

Falun Gong first came into worldwide attention on April 25, 1999, when about 10,000 Falun Gong members staged a sit-in in front of the government compound in Zhongnanhai, Beijing.

On May 7, 1999, the U.S. bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade.

June 4, 1999, marked the ninth anniversary of the Tiananmen Incident.

July 1,1999 marked the 80th anniversary of the CPC's founding.

Falun Gong group was outlawed in China on July 22, 1999.

in the message posted above, its supposed to be the tenth anniversary in 1999...i stand corrected

Hi yarlow JI,

Yes, China has a history of seceret cults/groups who besides practicing their "religion" were actively involved in overthrowing the governmnet. A good example of this is the Taiping rebels, who tried to establish their "kingdom of the great heavenly peace", and claimed 20 million lives.
