KOL Report Kathmandu, Oct 7 - Condom Day 2003 is to be observed throughout the country this year on 11th October with the theme "Let's use condoms, it's our responsibility." ..................... The Sajha Post Report: Kathmandu, Oct 7 - As many as 5000 college and high school students congregated outside one of the oldest college in the Valley - Tri Chandra College in a demonstration to urge the government to not promote the use of condoms. According to senior speaker Mr. Asta Narayan Pyasi, "Sex is a taboo in our society. For the government to openly promote the use of condoms is like teasing and taunting the young population of the country who are not married, and don't have access to willing partners." In a press release, President of the SACA (Students Against Condom Ads), Hasta Bahadur Bangdel has raised a valid point. "... with who shall the students and the general (unmarried population), use the condom with?" Government officials were not available for comments. Signing off for the Sajha Post. |

5000 'educated', or to-be-educated people find it wrong to have sex before marriage????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only that, they want anyone else who want to do it to be 'doomed forever in eternity', without giving proper access to safety measures. They are campagning against ads for comdoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!wow!!!!!!!!! That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard..................dont they know that people who want to do it, are gonna do it anyways.............and if they dont know about condoms, or if condoms are hard to come across...........too bad. The result, How else do you think the AIDS crisis in Africa arose?? Well, isnt it supposed to be a 'social taboo', for bahuns to touch the 'untouchables'? What now, we got 3000 'students' protesting for that tomorrow??? Shady |

I agree with Eminem bhai....and the use of condoms is not just for unmarried couples, but more so for the married couples. Reasons: birthcontrol, preventiven measures against STDS. So the issue of taboo is out of the question. What lopsided thinking!! And that too among educated people! |

This thread is not only for humor, though. In fact we have been observing CONDOM DAY in Nepal for about a decade now. Since the reporting of HIV/AIDS cases in Nepal, Nepal Red Cross Society decided to celebrate a day to create awareness about safer sex practices among the Nepali people nine years ago. This program was first targeted among the people working in India and who visited their home during Dashain. These organizations tried to educate those Nepali youths working in India, who divulge in extra-marital sex, to be safe from sexually transmitted diseases. Condom Day is observed on the first Saturday after Dashain every year. The day is choosen so that people who came back home for Dashain and are planning to leave shortly, could be well approached. These days, CONDOM DAY is observed throughout the country. They have rally with placards, distribute condom samples to desensitize people and encourage them to talk about this matter, distributed STD/HIV/AIDS related materials, and often end with some Samosa and Chiya at the program venue. We (myself and my organization) have participated all CONDOM Days in Nawalparasi district in the last five years. This is the story of CONDOM DAY in Nepal. For authentic information, please visit the following page. (A press release from last year). - http://www.nrcs.org/press_release.html |

Arnico, Ashu bringing the statistics implies the following: 1. More people need to observe such day for greater awareness 2. Since the population growth rate, pop density, etc., in Nepal is one of the highest in planet suggesting either people there might not be using C as expected or Cs supplied there are of poor quality Just a thought |

Ashu dai's posting possibly implies this as well: Majority of Nepal's population is too poor to invest money in condoms. Yes, condoms are distributed free at health centers in the villages but in a country where the "arya sabhyata" has made sex a taboo, people are still too shy to walk up to the health center and grab a free condom or two. Just a thought, too. (the phrase courtesy of Bhunte dai) |

Dautari, I would say majority of Nepal's population too agressive for not using such useful 'asthai sadhan' rather poor to invest on it. Their being agressive may be due to the taste associated with it. However, i believe there has been ongoing research for making it more palatable. It is way cheap in Nepal relative to US. For example, two pieces of condoms costs a dollar in USA, but for the same amount of money one may be able to buy enough for one year of supplies. However, I got some idea from your last posting. When people are too shy going to a local health post, how effective it would be delivering these by posts/mails? For example, health worker may obtain the list of reproductive couples from VDC office and just send package of useful materials enough for one year of supply. I believe most people wont get offended by it. I am not sure if this has been experimented. But, people educated in reproductive or public health may have better idea about it. Again, just a thought... |

I think you are right. And, again we must also work at making 'condom' a taboo. I remember a 'condom' ad yanked off Nepal TV after too many protests from family viewers. It was because of the use of animation (which allegedly made it more attractive for children) and the use of the word "dai". Yes, I am referring to the "jhilke dai" ad. |

I will skip the serious part of 'health and reproduction' for now. Saroj, that was a hilarious piece. Equally hilarious was uullu bhaing of SimpleGal bahini. But on a serious note, Both Saroj and Simpu made me pause and reflect on the state of our society. I am not a follower of Rajnish. But I believe a sex-starved society like ours is very unhealthy society. I do not know if Saroj intended it, but his piece is a powerful comment on that. And Simpu made me first laugh and then cry. Cry for our mind's sub-conscious picture of our society where you can gather hundreds of people for any type of weird cause. Simpu, no offence hai, cuz you're not alone, we ALL carry that picture. |

Yes, there is a serious issue of family planning and STD prevention... and yes a condom day can help a lot, as can the increasingly direct billboard ads around Nepal. My comments were on the humor, since that was how the thread started. Nepe: good point though. Sometimes it is tempting to try to organize a a large group of people marching down Kathmandu streets, just for the heck of it.... |

..for those who don't know this. october 11th is also the birthday of Amitabh Bachhan. i think he should play a condom ad. in order to decrease the overly-efficient output of the indian masses when it comes to childbirth. indian people listen more to Amitabh Bachhan than any stupid-looking-geek in condom commercials. |

It is really a good thing for a society like ours who are deprived of sex education. I am certain like for past nine years, it will help to generate more awareness among Nepali people this time too. Thanks a lot for the information provided by "Gunaraj ji" ahead. Thanks a lot to "Nepal Red Cross Society" to launch this wondeful program thinking of the right situation and the appropriate timing (I mean regarding celeberating a week after Dashain thinking of the people coming back from India). This is really a health conscious program not only stopping the transfer of STDs(sexually commucabe diseases), HIVs and other deadly disease but also initiating a remarkable meausre taken in controlling the rapid population growth. I would encourage and thank all the "sajha' members to put such topic for discussion. It awore me and I hope it awore, awares and will aware everybody to put into practice using condoms while having sex accordingly as per necessary. God bless everybody. |
