Dear all,

Fr. Watrin -- a long-time English teacher at St. Xavier's Schools (Godavari and Jawalakhel) and at St. Xavier's Campus, and the present Moderator of Godavari
Alumni Association (GAA) -- is back in Kathmandu after undergoing intensive chemotherapy-treatment in Cincinnati, Ohio USA.

There's going to be a reception for Fr. Watrin & his extended family members from the US who are presently visiting Nepal.

Those of you who are in Kathmandu and know Fr. Watrin, do come say "hello" to Fr. Watrin and meet his other students and well-wishers.

Date: Oct 9th 2003, Thursday
Venue: GAA Lounge, Thamel
Time: 6 pm

Refreshments will be served.

I wish I was there, but I am here in the USA. I had spoken to him on the phone about a month back. Please give him regards from my side.

The reception for Fr. Watrin went quite well yesterday. About 50 people or so -- all of whom are former students of Fr. Watrin -- showed up at GAA.

Kunda Dixit, editor of The Nepali Times weekly, gave the opening speech, praising Fr. Watrin's emphasis on original thoughts. Thanks to Fr. Watrin's efforts during our
school days, said Dixit, the school has produced a number of writers in English in
Nepal.

Anil Chitrakar of DC-based Ashoka Foundation recounted how Fr. Watrin established a Nepal office of Ashoka Foundation, and helped find the first lot of Ashoka Fellows in
Nepal.

Shanta Dixit, principal of Rato Bangala School, said that during her Amrit Science College days, she used to come to GAA to take part in social service and extracurricular activities. She said that she was encouraged by Fr. Watrin to lead and organize
many of the then GAA activities, helping her better her leadership and social skills.

Shanta Bdr Pun, a retired NEA official, talked about the Godavari days, and recounted how Fr. Watrin helped rescue an American boy, and told other such life-saving acts, undertaken by Fr. Watrin.

Kedra Shah remarked that Fr. Watrin was an effective sports coach, and told stories of how young Godavari boys defeated -- in the '60s -- the then teams from the Nepal Police and Nepal Army in basketball and football.

Fr. Miller talked about Fr. Watrin as his spiritual guru, someone who gave him emotional and spiritual sustenance when Fr. Miller was starting out as a young priest.

***

There were other stories of friendship, of braving the Godavari winters together, of passions for excellence in everything and of playing sports together.

It's amazing and even humbling how much this Jesuit Priest from Cincinnati, Ohio -- with his midwestern sturdy values and farm-based work ethic, has given to Nepalis and Nepal by way of spending his entire adult life as a teacher and school administrator in Nepal.

*********

Fr. Watrin is here in Nepal until the end of November. After that, he'll had back to the US for further treatment.

Asutoshchora sounds like that crazy Wasito guy... get a life dude.
dautari Posted on 14-Oct-03 06:50 PM

Yup, get a life ....

And just by looking up to our former teachers we do not become christians. In fact, I think it is Hinduism that teaches us to look up to the teachers or the gurus as one's father.

And Ashu dai,

do you know when Fr Watrin's going to be back in the USA / Cincinnati?
ashu Posted on 14-Oct-03 06:56 PM

Dautari,

Fr. Watrin will be back at the end of November.
