It must be traumatic to children/parents who are desperate for a better education. Too bad to know that some parts of Nepal still like so backward ...

This one is among a few worthy threads gone unnoticed. Anyway, I think the story is clearly a case of failure of the traditional state of Nepal, which is basically a domination of one language (Nepali), one religion (Hindu) and one jaat (tagadhari) represented by the rulers over the rest of them. I will not spell out the republicanism here, however, I will certainly say examples like these point out to the need of transforming the state from being one of the domination by one group to the rest to a sharing of power by all groups . Anybody Dr. Harka Gurung ?

Reminds me of what my father used to tell me about his childhood spent in the hills of Khotang. During his childhood (30s/40s), the villagers did not know what school was. Whenever anyone (apparently from the "nepal" = kathmandu) spoke of "iskool" people thought of "iskush" which was known as "iskool" in our area. Being a tagadhari himself, my father had the privilege of learning to read and write in Nepali from a learned Brahmin in the village. A boy was considered a very brilliant if he could read 'Swasthani'. 'Swasthani' was the landmark ... the SLC of those times, perhaps. The story from Humla is most probably just one in many schools in the area where children are deprived of the opportunity of education. The slogans of "shiksha ko ujyalo jyoti ghar dailo ma puryaaun" still rings in my ears. So, here we have a place where there is a school but no teachers. Then there are "bidyarthi yuwa" in the cities who burn question papers because "the questions were difficult." I am of the opinion that schools and college should be free of politics. Students and teachers should not be allowed to join any political party. Yes, I sound like a Panche but in my simple "khopadi" no politics in campus sounds better than constant violent clashes between student organizations.
