Hi guys,

Can you say, "Marsyandi river & Daraundi rivers" are two of the famous rivers in nepal, if you were explaining it to someone? Plz help moi.

Thanks.
Bhunte Posted on 13-Oct-03 01:47 PM

G_I baini,

It is hard to tell indeed. Daraundi and Marshyangdi may be famous in Nepali folklores like

"Barsha mas ko daraundi le
Manai chiryo timro rook ko karaunti le..."

or

"Pan ko pat
Maya timlai samjhinchhu din ko rat
Marsyangdi salala..."

The famous rivers in Nepal are actually Gandaki (religiously), Koshi/Mahakali (politically), and Karnali (economically). Other rivers like bagmati, seti, rapti, kamala, mechi are locally famous. Hope that helps....

Kasto apthero question sodheko GI le, aba khoi ke bhanne..

Here are my points hai:

Prithvi Narayan Shah, known as the founder of modern Nepal, originally ruled the small kingdom of Gorkha that was located in the periphery of the Marsyangdi and Daraundi (a major tributary stream of the former), and later unified similar such small kingdoms (and his descendants continued doing so after his demise) that formed the present boundaries of Nepal. So, we can say that modern Nepal has her roots in the periphery of those two rivers, and thus those rivers are of historical significance (and there is frequent mentioning of those two in Nepal's history from the unification era).

The Marsyangdi is one of the seven major tributaries of Nepal's second largest river system, the Sapta Gandaki. So in terms of water volume, it is one of the largest rivers.

The Marsyangdi and the Middle Marsyangdi (now under construction) are one of the largest hydropower projects of Nepal. Furthermore, it is also a popular river for rafting. Therefore, it is of economic significance as well.

The road from Kathmandu (and the eastern half of Nepal) to Pokhara partly follows the Marsyangdi. Also it is followed and crossed by a major portion of the Annapurna Circuit trek which is one of the most popular trekking routes. As I mentioned before, it is also popular for rafting. Furthermore, until the commencement of the cable car service from Kuringhat a few years ago, a visit to the famous temple of Manakamana meant crossing the Marsyangdi at Khaireni followed by a long uphill climb. Also it is a name heard in many popular songs as Bhunte mentioned. Therefore, it is a "familiar" name for many.

My conclusion: It is a river that is "famous" and of significance in many ways.

Chiple jyu,

In Shah dynasty Chepe khola is also famous in Nepali history as the river served as a boundary between the then Gorkha and Lamjung territories...

BHunteji, I simply ommited other names on this thread, thanks anyway :) Btw, did the Budhi Gandaki mark the eastern boundary of Gorkha rajya then?

Gurly,
Still stuck on the 'Ghairi Khetko' dance? Explaining to somebody close, eh?

I agree with Bhunte, and Chiple's explanation is pretty good. Bottom line, Marsyangdi is one of the famous river but not the most famous ones. Daraundi, I hadn't even heard of it before that song.
Bhunte Posted on 13-Oct-03 05:06 PM

Chiple ji,

I guess that might be true. What I recall reading my child story book that the then Queen mother of united Lamjung-Gorkha streaked breast milk at Chepe river symbolizing the boundary between Lamjung and Gorkha, and quelling the territorial disputes beween her sons...

DWI: stuck in Gairi khet ko...?
You might want to visit New Anthechhyakari part IV
but, here it is part of the song.....

Gairi khet ko tirai hanyo 2
barsa yam ko Daraundi le
oh nauni jasto mero man nauni jasto
mero man chira paryo
oosko roop ko karaunti le 2

Marsyangdi ma jalai halyo majhi dai le aja 2
bihani ma dekhe ooslai matai lagyo sajha
mero mana nauni jasto mero mana chira paryo
oosko roop ko karaunti le 2
........
