Dear folks to the North (or any other informed Sajha souls),

I need some help from you. I have a conference (it is on a very boring topic; "Bust to Dust: Mammalary Gland Size and Life Expectancy Among the Homo Sapiens Femalensis") to attend in Montreal this weekend.

I have a US J-1 visa. What kind of documents/procedures do I need to get into Canada from the US? Is it a open border where no documents are needed? If a visa is needed, can I get it in Boston? And how long and how much does it cost to get one? Or better still, can a visiting pass be obtained at the border from a friendly Mountie?

Any help in this will be deeply appreciated,

Yours truly,
Suva Chintak

Contact one of the Canadian Visa Offices in USA. There are website for each of them. You will have to apply as a tourist. Forms can be downloaded from the similar websites of CIC, Canada.

Suva Chintak

If it is really this weekend, you better have a barbaque at your home than doing anything to cross the boarder. Today is Wednesday, right? Nepali citizens are Visa National with regard to entry to Canada. That means you have to have a visa from the consular office.... and you guess how long it does take (probably 3 weeks would not be too short for this). Re-entry to US is not a problem as you can come without applying for a visa within 30 days of visit to Canada, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands.

Man, what were you doing since your paper was accepted for presentation?

In addition, note that:
" if you are not a citizen of the country in which you are applying, you must provide proof
of your present immigration status in the country of application;
" if the government that issued your passport or travel document requires a re-entry permit
this must be obtained before you apply for a Canadian visa; and
" additional documents may be required

Dear Darsankaka and Harris jyu,

Thank you very much for the info. I guess it might be too late now to get the visa from the Canadian consular office in Boston (if there is one). I had always thought of the Canadians as open and accepting people, now this traumatic experience changes all that!

This is such a missed opportunity for me...a stimulating workshop, a scintilating driving companion! I now declare a trade war against Canada...I will boycott maple syrup for a whole year.

I guess this trip was too good to be true,

Tyo Mongoliani bhusthighre aaimai ko kosheli lyayera ni chup chaap chha baa...aarkako parcel tettikai chapaidine? :P

BTW, I know a lot of people who came to the Canadian consular office in NY and got their visas in a day...provided that they had all the proper documents. If you need to come down to NY, lemme know...a bottle of Johnny and seeeeeeeeya paarne chhoila will be ready for you!

Suva Chintak,
If you are in the university in J1 visa, contact your international advisor in the university. They will provide you a letter that will allow you to stay and travel in canada for the period of maximum one month. If you want to lengthen your stay you can go near by consulates to extend it.

SimpleGal Posted on 15-Oct-03 03:01 PM

SC jyu,
You can get a Canadian visa in a day in NYC (Canadian consulate) as Poonte dai said. My roomie, who is South Asian on F-1 goes to visit her boyfriend in Vancouver often and she gets her visa within a day at the NYC office. Do call them up and inquire! Don't give up yet!!

In peace.

isn't it visa waived for US visa holder? i was thinking going straight there coming this summer for a meeting..
suva chintak Posted on 16-Oct-03 08:23 AM

Friends,

Just called the Canadian consulate in Buffalo, NY. They say you need to get to the consulate to get a Canadian visa, you can get it within a day.

Bhunteji, no. If you are a citizen of Nepal, holding a US visa will not hold, you got to get their visa.

Aba Poonte jyu, your daha is to be spared: I won't be able to make this trip to the north with the attractive driving companion, what a pity! Do I hear a sigh of relief on the other side?

As to the Mongolian koseli, it is safe and sound with me. Next time I visit your fair city, I will bring her for you. But if you be in a hurry to try your new gift, I could try UPSing her to you, let me know.

And when you see her, I think your misconception about them being bhustighre will be finally dispelled. They are in fact the most delicate and slim built femme fatales I have seen anywhere.

Cheers,
SC

SuvaChintak,

Already back in Boston?

Nice to see you back in Sajha. So, when are we getting to read your views on China?

namaste and zai-jian!

suva chintak Posted on 16-Oct-03 11:43 AM

IF bhai,

Yes, I just got back from a very rich and enjoyable journey into the middle kingdom. After leaving Beijing, we went to Xian. The terracotta warriors are amazing. We then flew to the enchanting city of Chongquing on the Yangtze river. The cruise on the Yangtze was memorable...the three gorges, the dam, the people, and of course the wonderful food. China rocks, and what is more, it also rockets now!

Got off the boat at the city of Yiching and flew to Shanghai...the sensous whore of the orient. This city is amazing...this city has everything to offer that a man might possibly want. I found the belles here to be much more sophisticated that the ones we encountered in the Embassy lane in Beijing...marvellously enticing.

Yes, I do plan to write a short piece on my China travel. But that might take a while though, so many other pressing tasks piled up during my absence from my tandoori shop.

It was so nice to hang out with you in Beijing, and thank you so much for your tips. I will always remember our Dashain bhoj near the Nepali embassy. Good luck with your semester, although that might reduce your trips to the enchanting alleys of Sanluntun (sp?).

Take care and keep posting here in Sajha,
SC
