Nepal Makes Its First Bridge

By Sajha Post Reporter.
Kathmandu, 15 October.

One day after its northern rival flew a man to the space, Nepal made its first bridge over Bagmati River. Officials touted it to be the first bridge of its kind in the world: designed, made and financed exclusively by the Nepalese.

Armored vehicles sorrounded the Kopundol and Thapathali area since the morning, as people of Nepali origin poured in from around the world to witness the historic occcasion, and police had cordoned off the bridge inauguration area from the early morning. Security officials said they feared Maoists infiltration.

King Gyanendra cut the ribbons and drove his slick Jaguar over the bridge, while prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa watched. A military band played national anthem for six hours. Earlier poet laureate Madhav Ghimire had penned a beautiful poem to immortalize the occasion.

In a brief inauguration ceremony, engineer Subas Baral, who had trained in Pulchouk Campus, spoke of the effort he and his team had put to build the bridge, and concluded his remarks in high pitched voice: "What natured had rent asundered long ago, men joined today. It will be proven a milestone in the history of Nepali civilization."

CPN Maoists, the rebels famous for destroying bridges made in countrysides by foreingers, vowed not to do anything to the bridge. Leaders of political parties, who have consistently boycotted both the king and the prime ministers, went khusukka to the top floor of Nepal Rastra Bank office in Thapathali to watch the cermony from the distance.

Reactions of people from around the country was, though, mixed. While Kathmandubasi were jubilant, a teacher in Prithvi Narayan Campus reacted that the government shouldn't be spending money on such expensive projects while the nation had other severe problems like poverty and diseases. "We spent ten crore rupees to make the bridge," he said, " but we can immunize one million children with that money. Remember that most of the time, Bagmati doesn't swell so much that people in Kathmandu can't cross it. In winter, it is just a few centimeters deep."

The Bridge is a Grand Design: Koirala

By Sajha Post Reporter in Jumla.
Kathmandu, 15 October Evening.

A few hours after the inaugration of the first bridge constructed over Bagmati, a seasonal river in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, Nepali Congress President and Ex-prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala has called the construction "a part of the grand design". "This grand design is different from the old ones only in that even Bamdev Gautam is involved this time," Koirala told the journalists from various national dailies who were there to search for terrorists and serial killers, so they could be brought to the International Conference Center at Baneswor and felicited.

Koirala was speaking at a chiyaa-paan samaaroha organized by Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa in Baluwatar durbar.

During the samaaroha, the two oldies discussed the feasibility of moving all ministries, including the Prime Minister's quarter, to Narayanhity. "Since that is the only safe place, we are thinking of moving our office there. And since that is where the leaders of political parties are going to be if/when they come to power again, we hope there will be no objection", Thapa has been quoted as saying. This comes at a time when reports are floating around that the Maoists' next target is Simha Durbar.

Meanwhile, the scientists at Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, are preparing a memorandum to be sent to the man from "the northern rival" who successfulyl landed in moon. This memorandum will also request China to lend some space to Nepal so that our ministers and King can stay and rule from there without having to worry about being attacked by the Maoists.

haha funny.

Biswo, I missed seeing the SajhaPost reporter bit, but what gave it away as satire was the fact that the Jaguar was described as slick.

M.P., that was funny too!

Damn...........I was wondering for a while why did they need a third bridge in Thapathali... Ha ha ha...

Nice report...Keep it up
Biswo Posted on 17-Oct-03 09:34 PM

Arnico, Bhunte, and Thaag,

I am glad that you guys liked it. The bridge came to my mind as it was a big time pain in the neck for a long time in the past.

Today, I was surprised to know that this orbital flight was actually a military program done to install a spy satellite. Reportedly, now China can take a picture of anything a few feet long in the earth.

A new space race is for sure. I knew there was this space summit in Rice some months ago participated by who's who of America's space exploration effort, and the attendants there were already sharpening their dagger to participate in this race reignited by Chinese grandiose announcement.

The world benefitted a lot by last space race. Cars, computers etc all use techniques primarily designed for space exploration purpose according to a NASA pamphlet given to me when I visited Cape Canaveral, Florida. We will benefit from this reignited race again, I am pretty sure.
