Another great Novel written by Pulitzer Prize winner JHUMPA LAHIRI. A Must Read :-)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli are recent immigrants to Boston from India in 1968 when they give birth to their first child, a son. Their son ends up with the pet name of Gogul, when his "good name" never arrives from India. Gogul despises his name and grows up as American as he can while his parents cling to their Bengali past while living what appears to be a typical American suburban lifestyle. Jhumpa Lahiri (winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Interpreter of Maladies) has written a novel about immigrant lives, families, and bonds that can never be broken. The Namesake has received high praise from most reviewers. Michiko Kakutani begins her review for the New York Times, "Jhumpa Lahiri's quietly dazzling new novel, The Namesake, is that rare thing: an intimate, closely observed family portrait that effortlessly and discreetly unfolds to disclose a capacious social vision."

Just a quick note.

Jhumpa was at Barnard College - her alma mater - yesterday to promote "The Namesake." Although it is the mid-terms season, I could not resist crossing the street to BC's McIntosh Center. But the main room, where she was present in person, was already full; and those of us at the Center's upper floor, which was almost full, were left gazing at the video screen.

I listened to her read some excerpts from "The Namesake," but honestly, I thought gazing at the video screen was simply not worth the sacrifice of two hours during a mid-terms season and left the room after 10 minutes. Had I secured a seat in the main room, then I would, in all probability, have stayed for the whole duration of two hours. The lady, at 36, is indeed a treat to the eyes (and ears too)! As for the excerpts themselves, I thought they were good but not exactly superb. But then my assessment was limited to those 10 minutes of screen time.

Although I have read neither "The Interpreter of Maladies" nor the "The Namesake," I remain her fan simply because I have yet to come across a more beautiful writer of South Asian origin! :)

Those who get hold of "The Namesake," could you share your opinions on the novel? If it is real good, then I guess I should get hold of the novel some time in the winter vacation.

Okay, got to go now.

Lalupate*Joban ,

I know what you are saying :-). She is very good looking. I'ven't got chance to meet her but I've seen her on TV. She looks like Aishowrya Roy, doesn't she ?? FYI, I've read the novel and I liked it very much but other people might have different taste.....Maybe :-)

"I know what you are saying :-). She is very good looking. I'ven't got chance to meet her but I've seen her on TV. She looks like Aishowrya Roy, doesn't she ??"

Nah, baabaa nah, I wouldn't use Aishwarya Rai as a reference point to describe a Pullitzer winner. Jhumpa does not need a reference point. She is bright; she is beautiful; she rocks. That's what matters. Given a choice between Jhumpa and Aishwarya, I would choose Jhumpa any day. Well, too bad Jhumpa is not in her early twenties, re kyaa!

By the way, one particulary interesting thing that I learned from that book-reading session was that Ganguly is a British modification of the surname "Gangopadhyaya."

when these guys were comparing her with aishwarya i was very curious to have a look on her.for all of you guys who havent met or seen her, here is how she looks like.

and finally aishwarya looks much much better than her.
:)

I don't know where you got that pic from. That's one of the most unflattering pics of Jhumpa I have ever seen. You will find a more representative pic of the rising literary star in the following website:

http://www.barnard.edu/writers/

Moreover, it's not only about beauty, it's more about beauty with lots of brain. Not that I mean Aishwarya is dumb, though.

Lalupate
This is her real picture. You are being illusioned by some one like the guy in " Shallow Hall"
remember......
;)
Lalupate*Joban Posted on 22-Oct-03 12:21 AM

No dude, it's not a matter of illusion. I am not denying that it's her real picture; I am just saying that it's not the representative picture as such. I have seen her in person and in many other pictures. And she generally looks a lot better than the one that you have posted here. That's all. Now, now, don't you bring that "Shallow Hall" parallel! I am not in love with Jhumpa or something, you know! :) I am just admire the combination of beauty and brains; that's all.

Do check out the picture in the link that I provided and see for yourself what I mean.

Tabasco dude,

I don't know where did u get these pics from but she is much better looking than these pics. I'ven't decided who is more beautiful ; Aishowrya or Jhumpa. It's a tough choice. Can we please just focus on the Nove l?

john doe Posted on 22-Oct-03 08:44 AM

This Jhumpa/Aishwarya comparison doesnt make any sense. They're both smart and beautiful, but in their own distinct ways. The only thing they have in common is India.

Lahiri is a wonderful writer who has the ability to explore the psyche of those culturally displaced. "Interpreter of Maladies" is a fabulous collection of such stories that are sensitive to human "needs" and reasons. I admire her writing skills and the candid observations used in her narrations.
