Confused bhai, Good question, but tough to answer :( I came across this poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay yesterday and I thought it would be useful for you to read. She addresses your concern on some level. It is not "the" answer you were probably searching, but it is pretty close. And keep asking questions! That's what life is...... :) Good luck! Sonnet 99 Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain; Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink And rise and sink and rise and sink again; Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath, Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone; Yet many a man is making friends with death Even as I speak, for lack of love alone. It well may be that in a difficult hour, Pinned down by pain and moaning for release, Or nagged by want past resolution's power, I might be driven to sell your love for peace, Or trade the memory of this night for food. It well may be. I do not think I would.

money is not everything...and there a lot of things money can't buy.... you may buy relative happiness and stuff with money, but there will be more things you cannnot have even if you have money... so there is nothign that says its everything....actually life needs many things including money..and yes it does play a significant role but not all the roles. always lonely,

I like what isolated said...lets be parctical..school jana paisa chahincha..college jana paisa chahincha.. everyone's dream is to be a better person in the world..tesko lagi paisa chahincha..( a dirt poor person never can be a good figure in society) ani why do people try to compare money with love..love and money is like food and nepali dal bhat...if we dont eat food (MONEY)then we cant survive..but you can survive without eating nepali dal bhat(love) but it will make you feel better if you get to eat nepali dal that..thats it..so dont ever compare love and money because MOney is above love that i can assure you...

If money were everything Siddartha prince would not have gone for the search of peace. He had four manless (there were only woman) places for four seasons and he used to live there enjoying all facilities of the time. But he was not getting mental peace, so he left the palace for the peace. The empiror of Maghad, King Bimbasar offered half of his Kingdom to monk Siddartha, but Siddartha did not accept it, peace was most important for him. Then he found peace and became Buddha, if money were more important than peace, he would have come back to kingdom leaving the life of monk, rather he ordened all his family members including his 11 years old only child, Rahul. If you say Buddha was not mentally sound so he acted abnormally, almost half of the world accepted him, maily wise ones. Buddha always encourage householders to earn money, but from right livelihood. He encourage householders to work hard to collect wealth and use that wealth for betterment of the family and try to increase the wealth. He taught not to utilize ones earning onself only, rather use some portion of it for the welfare of the society. He also taught householders how to save onself from adiction of the wealth. Let's take modern example. If money were everything, American would be happiest people of the world. They are not. More than 11000/year people die out of gun shotings. Think, whether a happy person shots. So many anger management classes going on here. Those who goes into the wrong direction are not due to lack of money but due to lack of happiness. You analyse yourself to what extent money is important and those people who does not have mental peace are happy or miserable. In the third world, there is no money for food, cloth and medicine. People sleep on the street and dies drinking polluted water. This is another extremity. They are so ignorence that they don't know how to live the better life neither they have oppertunity to learn how to live better life. Lack of money is also cause of misery. A person who has disdom, can live a happy life no matter whether he is rich or poor. Even he is poor, he will use his wisdom at least to sustain life. Nobody run out of food, cloath and shelter in this world of planty, if some one is disciplined. No matter whether he is going to Harvard or Tribhuwan university, we have seen the product of TU have became professors of Harvard and MIT and Harvard, MIT products teaching in community colleges. Its wisdom dude, what is most important in life. Wisdom will drive you in the right direction and you will learn to live happily even with less resources. Never neglect money it is something, we can not survie without it, but never give all important to it. Boat is used just to cross the river, thats all. So money is mean not main. Dhananjaya

Is noney everything? Very intersting question. I don't know Confused how deeply you have thought about this and raised the question but this question is really deep. I have been hearing this questions since my childhood and heard lot many debates whether education or money is powerful and lot many similar stuffs. What I write is from my experiencial knowledge may this help you as well as some other friends. We must earn money for our life. We should not beg from somebody else, we should earn through right livelihood. The right livelyhood is one which directly or indirectly does not hurt or harm to any creature. We have to utilize the earned money for our right expenses and part of it for social welfare. If you have planty of money, you will start to do whatever you want. Whatever you will do, that will be for fun and pleasure. I don't know how mature you are to understand these things but to indulge in pleasure is the direct way to regress. I have witnessed many people who lost there life enjoying sensual pleasure. Pleasure makes you dull rather than bright. So if you have money and not wit you may go in wrong direction and distroy yourself. Don't you think that wisdome is something? If yes how come the money can be everything? If you born with gold spoon in your mouth, and if you are lack of wisdom, you will end up with iron spoon, moreover you may lose that spoon too. Education and wisdom both are different things, wisdom comes form experience which is opposite to idle life. Wisdom is so powereful, is is an excellent shields which provides wonderful protection from all the storm of life. If you have wisdom with you, no matter wherever you are, you will be happy and blessful. Why do you go to beach? why do you want to go to cenema? why do you want to go to clubes or to the places you want? Because you are not happy with what you are and where you are, only wisdom has caliber to provide you happiness anytime andy place. Wisdom will always keep your mind in balance which is extreme pleasure itself, you need not go out for fun. This is not psychological hypothesis that you have to believe, to believe this you have to experience, you have to strive for it, there is no shortcut. I would rather say don't belive this until you experience yourself, gullible people does not progress becasue they believe everything and don't try to experience, no experience no wisdom. Money is something, without it you can not sustain life and if there is no life you can not do what you want to do with your life. But to be adicted for moeny is another extrimity. Among the adictions, adiction of wealth and reputation are greatest adictions. This adiction begets ego and superiety complex in the mind of successful adicts, these two impurities imbalance the mind and ruin the happiness. That's why wise people of thepast try to save people form this disease. In Islam, Mahammad used Jakat (i am doubtful the word is correct, I don't know Arabic). Jakat is you have to donate to poor 2.5% of your yearly saving at the end of the year. In Hindu and Bauddha tradition, there was Sandwibhajan, dividing earning. There were costum of donation. Dana, donation is one of the strongest footstep in the path of purification, you can see the fossiles of it in our society. Whatever you earn, you earn from society, and you have to be grateful to the society. Isn't this a cool idea? Donation will melt your ego and keep the balance of the mind, otherwise you will think, you are someone special human being and very clever and different than others. This is what bringing the problem now a days. Any adiction is dangerous, it disturb the mental balance. contd...........

Money is not absolute. In fact nothing is absolute. Ani Pheri Atti Sarbatra Barjiyet. Dherai Khayo Bhane Chini Pani Gulio Huncha. You need the right blend of everything in your life to be happy and satisfied. Above all if you live a level headed life you will be happy. You may know the statistics that instant Lotto millionaire's are bankcrupts today. You may have heard many marriages falling apart due to dispute over who will share the billions of inheritance. If you have money you should know it's value. To know the value of money you need to do Parishram. Doing Parishram is what we are doing today as IFjyu said. So, if we get paid for what we are worth we would be really happy person. Similarly if we are loved as much as we deserved and vice versa then we would be happy lover. Here is what I got in my eamail today from my other half, and it is perfect to lead a 'Happy Life' called 'Road To Success' ================================================== The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, a driver called GOD, you will make it to a place called Success. ==================================================

Well, theoritically,we can say money is not everything. But practically ,people make it believe money is everything. And looks like it is. Bill gates is so famous and well known as well as well respected because he has money. He is doing social services, donating money as well as giving jobs to a lot of people. He is able to do all this because he has money,he doesn't need to worry about bills, nor about the financial burden.Similarly, there are countless people in this world who are famous, well respected just because they have money. They have everything. They can please their parents, spouses, famililes, friends as well as this so materialistic society. On the otherhand with some exceptions, poor people or people with less money is always in stress. He has to think about bills, his family, and he has to work hard to meet the basic needs.Even then his family never seems to be happy .Money makes people powerful. If people has money ,they can organise party and be more social and can make a lot of friends. They can send gifts that make people happy. If u do all this ,people will like you and u'll have more friends.Once u lose money and stop doing all this,u'll be rejected by this society.this is the reality, the true picture of our society. I think people say money is not everything only in verbal words, infact even deep inside they sought money. Money is everything.Yes it is.It looks like. But even now when people ask me,I'll say money is not everything.MAybe!

korrect Bideshi, It is the materialistic world which is making money mandatory to become a social elite. Erudition and earnest work is seldom rewarded with recognition. Then again, In Birbal's Wisdom too, it was said that A dani lives in heaven here as well as in the other world. While a begger (jogi) lives in hell here as well as in the other world. But a yogi / Bairagi lives in hell here but achieves heaven in the next hitherto. Om!

Oys Brother, I dont' think that you are saying something other than what I am saying, but I am saying a bit more. Money is one of the most important factor of life, this is fact. It is the mean to achieve all worldly things. I have not rejected it, I have said it. One must work hard to earn money and to give good shape to the family, but one should not earn money harming and hurting other beings. If someone gives all important to money he/she will not mind to earn it with all means, nomatter whether somebody else is effected from it.......... I am sure this is not unrealistic mere philoshopy, you are with me and many Sajhaits are with me because I have seen their reaction to corrupted leaders like Mr. Joshi. All the life styles are relative, you must have more money than somebody else and yet you feel you are lack of many things. You will be feeling that if you find house, car, this, that and that in USA you will be all set. No problem, rather that is good. Strive to achieve your goal, but don't lose the balance of your mind. If you think that, you will live peaceful life after bringing your dreams true, you are making mistake my friend, you will remain the same person while you achieve the goal. So, sofar you are living every moment happily and striving for your goal, you are doing best, but if you think that you will be automatically happy after the achievement of your goal, you are wondaring in wrong direction........if you say this mere philoshopy.....theoritical stuff....apply this theory in your life right from today and see the change. My friend, don't wait to live, live every moment. If you run after goals only, the goal after goal and goal after goal, life will end, so there is no special time to look for happiness, you must try to look for it every moment. Those people who has less money than you, would be thinking that, they would be happy if there were as rich as you are, but have noticed being yourself, your expectation is something more than what you have. This process will continue......I don't think that this is just a theoritical philoshopy. If you earn money and never donate in your life, that will make you stingy, if you are just looking for money always that will make you greedy, if you are craving for the wealth, that will cling you to the wealth. All stinge, greed and clinging are cause of mental imbalance and they are bound to bring misery. This may be theory for those who does not know this, but this is science. So, to save yourself from these three evils, the wise people use the costom of donation. Donation will kill these three enamies. This is also science. Donation does not mean you have to donate like Harischandra, you can donate the amount you can feel easy. This will make you happy and egoless. You won't think just for yourself, you will start to think for others too. This is excellent way of living my friend, this way of living is praised by all the wise ones. Buddha said: Donate with open mind, that will keep your mind free from sting, greed and clinging and you will be happy, but don't donate such a way that it will hamper you. So limited donation is excellent scientific tradition, an extravagant tradition which breaks the tradition of introvert and makes you extrovert and you will be shared by the whole world. I have experience this myself so don't tell this mere philoshopy. First self service and than social service but simultaneously. This is the motto of every Buddha, and wise personality. You have to be able to develop yourself first to be able to help others. He asked all his monks to get develop in meditation and go for welfare of many. He asked all householders to be economically sound and donate. If somone think that you will donate big amount only when you will be econmically sound, this will hardly possible. One has to go simultaneously. If somebody is not thinking about ones own development and just thinking about the social welfare, that is one extremity, a handicaft can not support others. If one thinks only ones own advancement and never look to the society that is another extremity. Middle way is best way of living. There can be many way of living, but give prioriety to right way, right way is only one which is indicated by wise Buddhas and Gyanis, always follow it which is safe, quite safe, I have experienced it. You can share your views after your experience. Dude, I am not theoritical person, I am like you. I love reality and I only talk about reality. Never think that this is debate, you know these all stufs, you are wise, I am sharing my experience with one of my friends which may be helpful to many other friends. Dhananjaya

The answe is no. But it is a very important aspect of life. Our life has multiple components needing so many different things. To lead a happy life, we need to take all these components forward in a balanced manner. I wish things were so simple and straightforward so as to have one thing to run after. I will share a story of Alexander the great (the Greek emperor). He was in his death bed and the priest asked his final wishes. He lay there thinking about all his achievements, all his wealth, the lands he conqured................ He then said, ''My body shoulld be taken out in a procession before burrying. My two hands should be hanging out of the sides.'' So that everybody could see that the great emperor went empty handed in the end. In today's modern world we need money to sustain life. But we need to be careful not to overdo it and lead a balanced, happy life.

Let me put my opinion : Money is/is not everything. It all depends upon the situation. Suppose I am in the hospital, with serious injuries. I need an operation urgently. The operation costs over 50,000/- but I have only 10,000/- What would I say? Suppose two brothers don't talk to each other. The reason was - one of the brother misused the money acquired by selling their parents' property. It is now a different situaion. Money is the cause of this trouble. Money is so good as well as bad. There is no specific rule to conclude. It all depends upon person to person. But one thing is sure - the more money one earns, the more desires grow. It is true for 99.9 percent people. If it is not true for you, you are in 0.1 percent category.
