1974 AD, the band is touring US for the 2nd time. Are they really that good of a band?? I know you guys are gonna hate me for asking this ..... just want to see how you'd react.
L-a-x Posted on 21-Oct-03 10:44 AM

paul gem,

everyone has his own taste and favourites. Some like the very color, taste and song and othes thing the other way. The best color to me could be the worst for you....

Like wise in music, its the same. Most young generation like 1974 Ad, and one of the main reason being, they are different than most of the other bands in Nepal. Thats what I feel...It doesnot have to be true with everyone. I think they are worth watching not just twice but many times...On top of that they have released their new album ( I guess its the third) and they will be singing those too.

To conclude, I strongly believe that they are worth watching.

dautari Posted on 21-Oct-03 03:57 PM

Well, like L-a-x said, everyone has his/her favorites. 1974 AD happens to be my favorite band. I am not sure if 1974 AD is popular among young generation only. I am already in my early 30s but I do like them a lot. Why? Because they are one rock band who genuinely come up with good compositions, unlike most of the rock star wannabies fresh out of guitar school trying to ape anything from Sex Pistols to Limp Bizkit. These guys mean business. Their music is mature because THEY are mature (in their late 20s and thirties). That is why I like 1974 AD.
putali7 Posted on 21-Oct-03 04:20 PM

Oh Yes I love 1974 ad band also. It's one of my favorite band..I loveeeeeeeee all their songs, especially "timilai piratiley badhula timi sanga mayaharu satula" bhanney manparcha..samji baschu..dherai dherai aucha mannma tita mitha jhajhalko haru..etc..Yeah you should definitely listen to it.
It's worth listening. Ma ta mero gaadima everyday sunchu niiiiiii..heheehe.Hopefully they will come to Colorado, USA as well:) I can't wait to see them again although I have seen their concert before too but its been a while. I want to see them again.

Yo them Putali, them thing I is trying to say is these biraders is not just them plain Deep Shreshtha type musicsians. Them must be da first band from them Nepal to play with someone like Frank Hayhurst or Jim Surles. Them must be da only band who them donasion to causes.Them Versatile musicsians.

I is really appreciate this birader in California who them did all this thing. Him planned all this thing and bring together these peopal. Him young peopal from Darjeeling. This young birader is just very down to earth peopal I is find.

Any one? Know and care to explain why they call themselves "1974" ? AD, I get it, I guess. Very curious....
dogz Posted on 22-Oct-03 11:33 AM

If I'm not wrong, then(1974) that's when they first got together and started playing as a band. But don't quote on me though.
dautari Posted on 22-Oct-03 01:04 PM

Nope ... in 1974 they were still kids. Manoj and Sanjay were not even born I guess. They originally called themselves The Band 1974 AD. Then they shortened it to "1974 AD". Sanjay was orginally a member of Shristi along with Ashish Sinha and Parangat Moktan. Then after Shristi got disbanded ( I don't know why) Sanjay joined 1974 AD.
Nirvana Posted on 22-Oct-03 01:05 PM

dogz-- I am pretty sure 1974 AD band didn't get together on 1974 and started playing as aband because some of the band mamber weren't even born by 1974 :-)).
Rastafariya Posted on 22-Oct-03 03:30 PM

Them biraders called theyselves 1974AD because them say them and there music is them influenced by them 70s Music. Them band membars like him Nirakar , Phiroz and Adrian is them influenced by them 70s music. They say that them 1974 sounded like them good year so them called theyselves 1974AD. There is nothing more that that.

So now you biraders have them your answers.

DrD Posted on 22-Oct-03 06:58 PM

1974 AD played 5 concerts in California and each of them was in front of a different crowd. All 5 concerts was a success&everyone loved them!
The band is so talented&you will have to watch and listen to them&LIVE&up close and personal&to know how much they have achieved musically&.good luck!!!!

I recommend 100% to go and watch these guys...rock!
Paul Gem Posted on 23-Oct-03 09:15 AM

thanks for sharing your thoughts, you guys! I have to admit that they're a good band, but in my opinion, they should stop singing English songs.....i repeat, they should NOT sing English songs and stick to only English songs. Wouldn't you say so?? for example:

in "Samjhi baschhu" is a good song till the following line comes up- "Everytime i look at the stars, blah..blah..blah.." totally ruined the song.
And...

"I was born in the city, in 1974..... and the people told me- please don't go!".....what is that supposed to mean??
Don't u guys admit??
sankaa Posted on 23-Oct-03 09:46 AM

1974 AD is Awsom. When I listen to them all the time , whever-wherever. "Pahilo juni ma" and that one which goes like, " parkhi bashuu ........" are my best... These guys are genious. I am a hardcore fan.

john doe Posted on 23-Oct-03 11:00 AM

Paul Gem, I'm totally with u on that. Their random English interludes in otherwise great Nepali numbers just spoils the fun for me. The first time I listened to Samjhi Baschu, I was initialy totally blown away, until Adrian suddenly fancied himself a born-again Axl Rose and started crooning in English, at which point, I cringed with dismay! It kinda felt like listening to 2 different radio stations at the same time with, making matters worse, one playing nepali pop and the other playing heavy metal ballads.

Dont get me worng, i love the band and am a die-hard fan, but I think they should stick to either all-nepali or all-english numbers.

JD
Paul Gem Posted on 23-Oct-03 11:15 AM

JD, thanks for sharing. I'd rather they stuck to Nepali songs and let Robin from RN'L sing the English. Like you said, if it wasn't for that Axl-like-crooning, that song would've sounded much better. By the way, what is up with so many guitarists in that band?? they have enough members to form not 1 but 2 bands: 1974AD and 1975 AD.
Great songs though.
ssNY Posted on 23-Oct-03 12:57 PM

So, are the Nepali Bostonians and Nepali New Yorkers going to their shows October 24th and 25th respectively? Wondering if I could take a quick poll.

I'm not much of their fan but sure am going to the show - you guessed it right, in New York, of course.
Rastafariya Posted on 23-Oct-03 07:30 PM

Birader Paul Gem and John Doe, We is finds faults in all our peopal. That is why we is Nepalis. That is them in our blood. I is not blame you because I is not musicsian peopal. Maybe you biraders is musicsian peopal. So in this mattar I is never can talk. You peopal knows bettar.

But if them Adrian is bad or them fusing is bad. I is wonder why them peopal like Frank Hayhurst wants to play with them? Maybe Frank Hayhurst not know music. Because him Frank Hayhurst only played with, Grateful Deads Jerry Garcia,Jefferson Airplane, The Bronze Hog, and Van Morrison. Him Frank Hayhurst not know anything about music. That is why they play with Adrian and 1974AD.

Oh about them guitarists. Biraders ever heard of Mariachi bands? Ever seen them Classical quatrets? Besides you knows what kind of styles each guitarist plays?

Well you peopal know more. I is just a simpal peopal trying to learn. Please explain to I biraders!
dautari Posted on 23-Oct-03 07:34 PM

I have absolutely no problems with Adrian singing in English. It's far better that Nepali rappers trying to become Nepali versions of Puff Daddy. Only Rappaz Union save the grace.
Rastafariya Posted on 23-Oct-03 07:43 PM

I is wants to know what birader gem and doe wants to say.
Rekha Posted on 23-Oct-03 09:31 PM

Rastafariya is right......
They were influenced by the music of 70's but they said the best year was 74 that's why they call them self 1974 AD.
They are worth watching not just twice but again and again. They're one of the best musician in Nepal. So talented yet so down to eath....... They are great...........
Hopefully everyone will go and enjoy the concert.................

As for you disturbed psyche no offence but shut your mouth. Haven't you heard the phrase "If you have nothing nice to say then don't say it at all"
DWI Posted on 24-Oct-03 12:38 AM

I listened to their CD (Sambodhan) for the first time just to get a preview of what I have to watch during their gig. All in all, I liked what I heard.

The best part of their songs is music which they seemed to be very knowledgeable about. However, contrary to the band's name and the reason behind its origin (as Rasta brother mentioned), the music sound more like 80's. If I had to associate a music genre to 70's, I would either think of bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC or any psychodelic bands. 1974 sounded more like Bryan Adams or other late 80s and early 90s bands.

Vocal is good and did I say the music composition is what stands out? As Paul Gem and John Doe said, they shouldn't try to sing the english portion. It drops to standard of the song below the belt. Pronounciation is fine but you cannot mix the 'nepali-style-rhythms' to english words. Just my opinion.

Other than that, I think 1974 is here for a long run. I heard their gigs are even better, so I am looking forward to it.
john doe Posted on 24-Oct-03 08:31 AM

Birader Rasta, u is completely misunderstands the gist of dem my and Paul Gem's postings. We is both big big fans of dem 1974 biraders. We is love most of dem music created by dem biraders. We is only try to convey our personal views about dem Axl Rose-like English interludes in dem otherwise berry berry good Nepali music.

Birader Rasta, just like u. i is no musician, but I is love to listens to dem music. U is equate giving dem personal opinions with finding dem faults a la typical nepali. Now this your attitude I is find berry berry offending. In dem future, pleeze refrain from passing dem sweeping judgments to whoever comes here and expresses dem personal opinions.

Have a berry berry good day, Birader.
Rastafariya Posted on 24-Oct-03 09:05 AM

Birader John Doe! That is what I is not unnerstaning. Them great peopal like him Sting is sing few lines in English song with difference languages which is even unthinkable for them English speakin world. I is never hear them Rolling Stone Magazine criticize him for Destryoing English song with giberish African lines.

Them great zajj bands and players asked them South Indian Singers to sing in them Jazz numbars. similarly I is hear so many Cuban lines in great English Musics. You is have somethin to say birader??

I is dont think so. We is always needs to find faults. Because you is Nepali.
confused Posted on 24-Oct-03 10:39 AM

khoii afulai dont know what them u all briaders talking abt..
tara on my opinion there are two of the best band of nepal that has tried to bring the old nepali music back in their own way..they are robin n looza and 1974 a.d ...they are two of my favrite bands and two of the best nepali band ever to live and they will live forever..

ani briader JOHN DOE when u listen to music you need to forget the grammer..if you listen to most of the english songs that are popular..they dont make sense...but still they dont get critizied by critics...like rasta..said..
john doe Posted on 24-Oct-03 11:27 AM

Birader Rasta, which part of "personal opinion" is u not unnerstanning?

I is never says I is criticizing the use of dem English interludes in nepali music. I is only say that in the case of dem few songs by dem 1974 biraders, I is not feel like it was a good idea.

And like I is write earlier, pleeze dont equate dem my 'Expression of personal opinion' with dem oh-so-cliched "leg-pulling ".
Rastafariya Posted on 24-Oct-03 12:00 PM

Birader John Doe, That is what I is saying. In your opinion you is say that them should be just like all other Nepali bands and Singers that you is find in every corner.

In other words peopal like Sting and all da rest should stick to singing whole song in English and should not include any other languaje because them destroy da english Songs by pretending to sing African or Cuban Lines.

I got it birader.

You is them music peopal and you is knows more than I is know. You is not leg pulling. You is just saying that them will be bettar if them sing like rest of them Nepali bands and singers.
john doe Posted on 24-Oct-03 12:49 PM

Birader Rasta, u is only unnerstan what u choose to unnerstan. I is also notice that u has bad habit of putting dem words in other peeple's mouth. U is tell me, birader, how I be able to argue with u if u is continue to misinterpret dem words of I? I is need another Red Bull if I is to continue arguing with u. Ja doctor is prohibit more than 1 Red Bull per day.

Rastafariya Posted on 24-Oct-03 02:29 PM

Birader Jon Doe What you saying I is not unnerstaning. You is said that them should not put them English in them Nepali song.

I is said that maybe you is should make them songs yoself like all them rest of them Nepali singers and songwriters.

Where you is saying I is putting them words in them mouth. I is simpal ask quesions. I is simplal said that you is wants them 1974 peopal to make songs like other Nepali Bands and not experiment with them English lines in them songs. Because according to you and that other birader it destroyed da perfectly good nepali Song.

Maybe you never said that.

Rasta Bro:

Sorry to bring negative vibes to your post, but I gotta let some people know how i feel...

As a matter of fact, I am not a big fan of Puffy my damn self...my favourite rappers are Nas, J-5 and most underground rappers trying to be real and express the truth...

If our attempt to express the Nepali folk soul via the American(African-American) art form is hard for you to digest that's cool with me.

To me hip hop is more than "bling bling" that Cash money flaunts, more than Jay-Lo's million dollar bootie shaking; it is a medium, perhaps the best one to communicate the frustrations and anger of the masses....

Yes, rapping in Nepali is a new concept and it might seem odd, but F it. So was flying...

Anyways, just thought I'd let u know since I was the Nepali rapper at the Minnesota concert.

Kgrurung,

I have not heard you out yet ... nor any other Nepali rap artistes in the US. I was talking about rapper wannabies in Kathmandu. As I said, among those in Kath, Rappaz Union save the grace. Girish is good too. But the rest of them (at least those who have got albums out) are not good. I don't about others ... and I don't know how good you are ... sorry.

And I am not saying that just because I like folk music everyone HAS to like folk music. Just a matter of choice.
