Part II

Wei Shi Ji for Whiskey and Pi Jiu for Beer:

Er Si Shi Hou Nanjing Er Lu (24, second Ruijin Road) is where Tequila Mama located. Obviously its a bar, but very different than the ones that I had seen in the US. Its a melting pot of expats/neo rich chinese, political leaders, high school students etc etc plus lazy american college students.

Its an interesting place because it has an African DJ who thinks himself as the lost brother of LL COOL J. He is kind of funny. If you look at him, he pretends that he is doing scratching and all those but he always plays the same damn boring music, but, its interesting to see people dance on the same tune for hours and hours everyday! Go there on Tuesday, its the same music, go there on Friday, its the same music.. I wonder why they even need a DJ there, they should just get a CD player and program it to play the music. Hey Ed what's up, you ask the DJ and he goes, do you free style? Honestly, i had to ask my other friends what he meant by that. Free style as in free style swimming?

Just heard from Lisa that Chinese society goes by the Confucian codes. But, look at this place, women drinking and hitting on men!(confucious must be sad).

Now the most interesting thing. We actually get student discount at this Bar. Weekdays, buy 1, get 1 free by flashing your red East China Normal University ID. I will stay in China and drink REEB forever with some occasional shots of tequila at Tequila Mama.

Nanjing Lu

Today, I unbderstood what they meant by China has the biggest population in the world. I had gone to Nanjing Lu today, but the crowd just scared the hell out of me. I had never seen so many people walking on the street. I was so scared that I had to go on a cross-over bridge, and stand there for hrs. I think its because of the upcoming moon festival, everyone has just flocked to nanjing lu to do their shopping, and look at me, I am here, all alone, scared, looking down.. smoking..I think that if they don't do something in nepal with the population, in 20 years Asan and Indrachowk would be as crowded as this famous nanjing lu, and what would i do then? I would just stay home, cover myself head to toe with a blanket and sleep.

RNAC office Yan An Xi LU

Ye dai ticket cha, ma nepali student.. malai ticket cahhiyo dai, ghar nagayeko dui barsa bhayo, aaba dui mahina pachi jana paye ramailo hunthyo, euta ticket pauna dai

[Sir, I am nepali student. I need a ticket to go home. I haven't been home for 2 years and there's a vacation after two months.. it would be cool to go home then.. Please hook me up with aticket]

This is what you hear at the RA office in Shanghai, and do you know what the students get in answer- Bhai ticket nai chaina, japanese haroole sabai plane book garechan..aaba ki ta dui mahina aghi jau, ki ta 5 mahina pachiko flight ma jau. (There's no ticket bro, all flights have been booked by the japanese. Either you go two months ahead or wait for 5 months) its a depressing place. Everytime I go there, I feel like I am in nepal because for some weird reason, the office has a depressing look to it. Its called "experience nepal before you go there", so, I am going there a lot, just to prepare myself for nepal after 4 months.

Nepali kids at the Bar

A-So, whre you from?
B-I am from NEPAL
A-Cool
B-Do you know where that is?
A-I do, ( and pointing her fingers towards me), Trai is from Nepal.

And at this point I came near to the first nepali I came across iN Shanghai, the friend introduced me to him, but his first sentence was.. so yoiu are a nepali? hajur (yes), was my answer. Then he brings aprobably a dozen of his friends and goes, ye nepali aayo, tara pahila yo nepali ho ki hoina test garnu parcha (here's a nepali, but we should test whether he is a nepali or not?).
Then he started asking me questions in english, he was a bit tipsy though, so I could very well understand what was going on with him. No matter how hard I tried to convince him that I toow as a flesh/blood nepali nagarik (nepali citizen) like him, he would not believe me. Then he asked me, OK, if you tell me where in nepal you were born, I will belive that you are not an Indian trying to fool me. To that, I went Prasuti Grihaaaaaaaaaaa! Then, he goes "dai ta sachikai nepali raicha" (he is a real nepali).
