What kind of cellphone do you have? make and model?
Which one would you get, if you could right now?
What service plan do you have?
Are you satisfied with the plan? the reception?

Shikhar, hope the following helps:

Mine is a Nokia 6610 (purchased at an attractive price (with mail-in rebate) when I signed up for a new plan contract)

I would still get the same (though price dependant). Nokia menus and downloadable software are really convenient. The phone comes with a decent hands free set, and has built-in speakerphone and even an FM radio.

Other pros:
The phone's IR port allows easy addressbook exchange between phone and laptop, and not only that, it allows using the mobile as a laptop modem without needing a cable.

It's a tri-band GSM phone, so it works in most countries. When traveling outside of the US I just swap in a local pre-paid SIM, and can make local phonecalls (no international roaming charges). Have tried that in Thailand (works well with AIS 1-2-call and DTAC Happy pre-paid SIMs). Am hoping to try it out in Nepal with NTC's new pre-paid SIMs.

In the US my carrier is T-mobile, with a decent national plan with free night and weekend. Coverage is good in cities. Spotty on the outskirts, and non-existent in some rural areas (and no, its GSM phones don't allow roaming on CDMA networks).

I chose T-mobile BECAUSE
1) they are willing to unlock the phones they sell (at a discount) with their calling plans. Unlocked phones allow using SIMs from different carriers (such as NTC in Nepal)

2) they do allow international roaming in a huge number of countries (expensive for voice calls, but cheap for text messages)

3) they are willing to temporarily suspend service (i.e. not pay the full monthly rate) if I'm traveling outside of the US for a long time.

If you want the best coverage in the US, I believe you should look at Verizon. If you travel abroad a lot, you may want to consider GSM networks and be sure to get an unlocked phone.

Hope that helps...

Wow Arnico:

Its like you read my mind ...... I was looking at the Nokia 6610 over the 6800 and that too with T-mobile as the service provider over ATTwireless (though ATTwireless have good sale going on at their website right now). Since I was looking at a cellphone solely for the purpose of making and receiving phone calls with a few text messages without any of the extra nuiscance like camera or whatever else they want to add on to it.. so thanks for the detail description of the pros and cons ..
YOU DA MAN ...... :-)

I second Arnico.. Currently have service with T-Mobile using Motorola V66. After incurring problems with reception, had checked in the Customer service and found out that Nokia 6610 has the least of the many problems. Their logs indicated that they had NOT gotten a single call regarding the phone.

Am currently looking for one...
