The first time I listened to the song "jaso gara, je bhana jata sukai laijau malai yo maan ta mero nepali ho" I was touched by the underlying love for Nepal that I could relate to living away from Nepal.

For a whole year I listened to that song on and off, feeling the sense of patriotism I perceived from it. Until a few days back.

Few days back I was able to understand the deeper meaning of the words that I could not perceive earlier. In a conversation with Adrian from 1974AD, I found out that it was him who had composed the song. And it had a way deeper meaning that I had perceived, and probably what a lot of other fans had perceived.

Adrian comes from Kalimpong. I have never been to Kalimpong and did not know too much about it besides the fact that couple of my friends had gone to school there. In conversing with Adrian I found out how many of the people in Kalimpong consider themselves as Nepalis although technically they are Indians holding Indian passports. Adrian recalled that during some concerts in the Kalimpong/Darjeeling area, lot of the audience started crying at the song and so did he - when they sang this song. Such deep meaning it held for them.

I don't know much details about how Darjeeling and Kalimpong got annexed into India, but I know now, that the brothers and sisters from there are Nepali at heart.

My hats off to these Nepali people who are living outside the borders, yet feel no different than us in their pride and love for Nepal.

San,

I too, love that song.

I also like their version of rato ra chandra surya. I remember requesting that song every time I went to their concerts (mostly at jatra) and they would play it for me and for the entire crowd.

Rato ra chadra surya
jangi Nishan hamro
jiudo ragat sari yo
baldo yo shaan hamro

being a nepali is nice. and telling everyone that we were never colonolized even by the british empire is super nice.

isolated freak Posted on 27-Oct-03 10:16 AM

It was Agam Singh Giri from Darjeling = It was Agam Singh Giri from Darjeling who composed these "patriotic" songs...
isolated freak Posted on 27-Oct-03 10:16 AM

My hats off to these Nepali people who are living outside the borders, yet feel no different than us in their pride and love for Nepal.

Exactly. It wasn't any poet from Nepal (technically speaking) who composed songs like "nau lakh tara udaya, dharti ko joon hasecha" or " Sugauli sandhi bireska chainau bhanideu". It was Agam Singh Giri from Darjeling and another Darjeling-Nepali Amber Gurung sang/gave music to those.

I too have respect for those people who consider themselves nepalis at heart no matter
where they are/were born.

Arnico Posted on 27-Oct-03 11:54 AM

I would like to nominate "Yo Man ta Mero Nepali Ho" to be Nepal's new national anthem.

It is unifying, and it celebrates the janta.

Can we have a show of hands???
Rastafariya Posted on 27-Oct-03 12:17 PM

Yes him Child Adrian is do good job. I is not unnerstan why many Nepalis do not consider Nepalis outside of Nepal differencely. Though Nepali is not by Political or Geographical lines. Nepali is what runs in them veins.

As for them Song Sambodhan. That song fits no one but him my birader Chandrey who them was Adrians Teacher and many more musicians teacher. That was who them Song Sambodhan was created for.

Later on them peopal made dedicasion to them King too. But peopal should remember that it was not them created for him King but him birader Chandrey. It was just dedicasion later to him King.

San, Rastafariya...very well said...I was born in Darjeeling, did schooling in Kalimpong and Kathandu, but my home was in Kathmandu and now living in US, a lot of people from Darjeeling/Kalimpong/Kurseong etc etc do have that Nepali pride and they take it seriously and they respect the Kingdom of Nepal very much...
Rusty Posted on 27-Oct-03 12:43 PM

Yeah IF,
I think they did not sing that song, "Rato ra chadra surya" in the concert I went. That song is very enthralling and patriotic as well.

"yo mann ta Nepali ho" is also another patriotic song that I extremely prefer to listen. However, Arnico, I doubt this song is at the level of being a national anthem.....I can not recall off the top of my head; there are better songs in Nepal that can substitute our obsolete national anthem.

I had heard of the band last year through a friend of mine when I was in Ktm. At first, I just brushed the band aside as just another bunch of wayward teenagers trying to get some limelight. Well, this labor day weekend, I had a change of heart as the song "Yo man ta mero Nepali ho" blared in the cozy atmosphere of the sajha extravaganza, lifting my spirit to unite with those who danced jubilantly. I felt a surge of patriotism in me as the beats and the words of this profoundly beautiful song rang though my veins.
"Kasko geet ho?" I asked DJ Rusty, who yelled "1974AD!!" Since then, I've become an ardent fan of the song and the band. It's truly a song that's imbued with the rhythm and meaning of what it means to be Nepali --- through time and across borders.

In peace.

Arnico, funny you should mention that "Yo Man ta Mero Nepali Ho" should be our national anthem. Remeber somtime back I had started a thread on our national anthem and if I remeber correctly you had posted your thoughts on it as well. At that time I had mentioned that this song should be our national anthem. I still think its better than
"shriman ghambira nepali".

DHANANJAYA Posted on 28-Oct-03 02:51 PM

San,
The heart which can be joyful in unity is beautiful heart. I always feel the current of sympathetic joy whenever I see unity and equality. It's pure love that brings unity and euality and that brings happiness to all. It's selfishness and ego that breaks unity and equality and cause misery.

Great!

L-a-x, if you have someone coming over from Nepal, then it may be cheaper for you to ask the person to get the CD from Nepal.
