For those interested, human development report of UNDP can be found here. http://www.undp.org/hdr2001/ Nepal is ranked ahead of Bhutan, Bangladesh and Yemen. Besides Haiti, rest of the nation ranked behind us come from Africa. Cambodia is ahead of us, and India and Pakistan are slightly ahead of us. China is ranked 87th. It is obvious that we need more education and infrastructure. The nation has seen a lot of new initiatives in education and energy sector after 2046, but it is being threatened by Maoists and other pro-retrogress people.

For curiosity's sake I checked out last year's rankings. In the 2000 Human Development Index, India was ranked at 128. So Nepal is currently in about the same place this year as India was last year. Pretty good, actually, especially given all the turmoil of the last several years in particular.

Dear Sally: Last year's report compared 174 countries, this year's report compared 162 countries. Nepal was in 144th position last year. It is difficult to say whether we made a big stride. Of course, there are a few countries in the list which were ranked ahead of us last year, and are ranked behind us this year.(Eg,Bhutan) But like you said, we can be optimistic about future. We have made small but consistent progress.
