Dear Sally didi/bahini JYU,
Like many others, I too found your remarks a bit hard to digest. I admit that you know more about Nepal than any average Joe, and it does feel bad to hear those "not-so-good" sounding words from you. No, not all nepali end up scrubbing toilets in the US, or serving fris at McDonald's. Saying that, that every nepali is a toilet scrubber in America is equivalent to saying, every american who goes to Nepal is a pot smoker!

I'm sorry if you didn't get the gist of what I was saying--humorous or not. Geez oh man, I never said ... oh, whatever. Language is complex. So is culture. Anyway, it's interesting to see what an allergy there is to the idea of working at McDonalds, or analogies to (gasp) Kami, or mice, or whatever. But I'm tired of explaining it here. Give it a rest. Good luck with your Chinese studies; you're in an interesting field for the future.

I did NOT get the gist of your posting becauseas English is not my first language and I hardly understand anything that is posted here. BUT, I DID find your rather (un)funny comments hard to digest.
Now, this is, as I understand a democratic forum. And, I can comment on what you say. So, don't even think of putting the matter to rest. Take responsibility of your words/actions.

No one has insulted Nepalis here. Least of all me. Let's not get into an unwanted personal squabble here.
PS. I think it would be didi, since I'm a mother and you're (I think you said once) an undergraduate, but undergrads and mothers can be all different ages. It's hard to tell much about people from a website.
PPS. I hope to hear more about China. I had planned to go to China once but it didn't pan out, and all I can remember about Chinese language is "where is the bathroom," which for some reason I thought would be really important to know in China. As I recall it was "wo chesswo zainar." But I've since tried it at various Chinese restaurants and only gotten stares of total confusion!

Honestly, Sally didi, I do think it was an insult. Sometimes, writers don't realize that by using certain words/phrases they are being insulting, but the readers do FEEL insulted.

Yes, I gtraduated last year. So, calling you didi won't be a problem for me, and I am probbaly a few years younder than you.

Well, sorry to heart that your China plan didn't work out. Do visit it when you have time and when everything works out fine. BTW, ce suo zai nar/nali is the correct way to say it. Wo ce suo zai nar translates to "I/my bathroom where?". If yoiu want to say the full sentence then it will be "wo yao yong ce suo, ce suo zai nar"?
BTW, did you want to go see the bathrooms in China just to nepalis scrubbing the floors?:-)

For someone who claims that his English is not good, your English seems to be pretty good to me (written English, at least). So how come that you pretend not to understand what Sally Two Trees is trying to say?

No, but I wouldn't have considered it shameful :-)
Actually I'd really like to see Kunming and Guilin (?) the place with those interesting limestone cliffs. And Tibet, of course.
But I'm sure if I tried to say all those Chinese words I'd pronounce them wrong, and then I'd really put my foot in my mouth. Which wouldn't be the first time ... Well, maybe I'll get there someday.

You are going to the really beautiful places. These cities are all
well-known for their beauty.
I think you can buy language teaching cassette in the first day
of your visit in China, and try to imitate some of the
pronounciation. It is difficult. But, I had learned how to say
numbers(1..100) and a few other important sentences in my first
day in China, and it helped me a lot when I was in train to
Nanjing from Beijing.
The key word I learned was actually "bu dong"(pronounced pu tong).
It means "(I)don't understand". Whenever somebody tried to speak
with me, I just said budong.

I too used a CD called Hyper China for my Chinese language class at Pomona college, and I found it really GOOD. Its the best Chinese CD-ROM you can buy in the US.
I learned Chinese the traditional way. Since, I did not speak a single Chinese word (nor tried to learn them before I left), it was hard for me and I don't reccommend that to anyone, unless the person is looking for a real challenge.

I remember my first chinese language class in Shanghai. The teacher was trying teach us how to say ni hao/kan dao ni wo hen gao xing.. etc, and I was saying to myself that its the hardest language to learn and that I made a mistake by coming to China. After two weeks, I started using my limited Chinese with the locals, and enjoyed it a lot. Then , I got the hang of the tones, pronounciations etc. and I continues learning it when I got back to the US. However, i din't focus much on writing/reading..
One thing I learned, is that, that the language is a mode of communication and you don't have to be porecise. Noone in China expects you to speak CHinese like a Chinese. So, not to stress out over the tones, pronounciation a lot because people understand thing by context.

You know guys, some of us are bored to death with this China this China that crap. This is the Greater Boston Nepali Community - not the Greater Boston "Nepalis who have been to China" Community. If you must reminisce about your glorious days behind the Red Wall or if you think everyone here is dying to learn Chinese, maybe you ought to set up a chat room just for that.

Do you see a smirk on my face? If you just get that beard out ... yes.. that's it. Now, do you see that smirk? Dum guy you have a point. Some people went to china especially "Trai" and he is the master of chinese language, expert in China relation, master-minded behind all the Chinese/mao/nepal connection conspiracy( whatever that means , but ask "Trai" he would know it). Good Job Sally didi for diverting his attention to China, now he will forgive you for your unforgivable faux pas about nepali.

D'où tracez-vous la ligne autrement? Je puis commencer un sujet sur N'IMPORTE QUEL sujet que je veux - complètement indépendant aux issues du Népal ou du Nepali - et puis dis que

Dear Dum Gai,
As far as I understand, this is a public forum and we are free to discuss on anything, even the one's not related to Nepal in here. If you have any problem with this, then simply ignore my posts. I will keep on posting on China/Nepal/Mao/ China-Nepal relations, unless people associated with the running of this site complain.
