My brother asked me this algebra question last week, I dn't think its a tricky question but because my mathematical knowledge is not so strong anymore I was wondering if I could get some help.

Sandra and Alisha are doing this part time job of folding envelopes for christmas. It takes Sandra 4 hours finish the job where as Alisha takes 5 hours to finish it. If they started at the same time, and did the job together, how long will they take to finish the job?

Please provide some details of the method used as well so I can explain it to my brother. Thanks very much!

My first instinct is to say 20/9 hours.

For the job, Sandra takes 4 hours, so in 1 hours, he does 1/4 of the job, in 1 hour, similarly, Alisha does 1/5. Together , they do 9/20 of job in 1 hour. So take the reverse, and for a job, they take 20/9 hours.

I hope it is right answer.

kps, is it algebraibic or ARITHMETIC (unitary method) problem???

Biswo is correct.
