Okay this is strictly about perishable items yaniki "food" so please don't write that you miss walking along the banks of bagmati or worshipping the natraj in the big temple or hanging out with friends in Nirulas checkin' out some girls or guys. I am interested to know what sort of food in particular that you have been missing. [and if you haven't figured out yet, this question is strictly for the ones living overseas but that doesn't mean you (those living in nepal) can't share your thoughts :-)] To start with mine, I particularly miss the following: 1. Gundruk 2. Mashyaura 3. Gahat ko daal 4. Jimbu |

Lekhika's food items need to be brought from Nepal. Bhunte's food item can be reproduced or bought here: 5. nepali ghiu - you can make it from unsalted butter. 6. asala machha - very close to Trout you can buy here. 7. raango ko masu - you can buy buffalo meat at some grocery storer. (or replace with beef. Nepa gayeko bela gau_daan gare hunchha) 8. rato jhrum jhrum chiura - not available. but try THICK poha from Indian grocery store. 9. timoor - try schechwan pepper from a chinese grocery store. 10. bhute ko tori ko tel - readily available at any Indian store (bhuteko and nabhuteko - both). Happy eating and thuk neeling! |

Ya Yah YaTree! Most of the food items can be reproduced or bought here. (y)agree! Okay, if you can find "karkalo", you can make mashyaura all by yourself, right?. Of course Jaangar hunu parcha gaanthe! eh... it's a long process, a real time pass for grandmothers. You don't go to the store and buy mashyouraa. You have to MAKE it all by YOURSELF. so, go find karkalo first! I miss Karkalo though. eh! ... (karkalo ma kagati nicharera eh pokhareli chamal sanga gamma gammmm ooh baby!) Once I was at the Indian store, I found that they were selling goat ko kalejo, heart and kidney. Aaai haalyo ni mukh baata pani. Instantly, I bought like one of each, and sidhai ghar gayera bhuntaaaan -- oooh byaabi, that was something I was really missing!! Also missing Bhaktapur ma "Jagate ko chwela". Superhit Ranga ko chwela, different than any other chwelas I've ever eaten in Kathmandu Valley. Even Jibro ko chwela was a killer one with San Miguel! ani ani Kachila, gurumari, Lakhamari, kalimati ko "ek dhoke" momo, bhareko (shoot I forgot the name) tyo white white color ko chaamal ko roti, maaash ko bara. phew!!, and I miss sauni ko pasal ko tatttato chiya and of course sauni ki chori. :( Lekhika hazur, Jaat faalne "gahat" ko jhol ma bhanya? eh! Kalanki bhai, I was trying to be helpful, not sarcastic. If you miss a particular food, you can buy/prepare that food item right here. Of course we will still be saying Nepal kai mitho. Kahan ko Raja Ram &. Like you, I like Karkalo/Pindaaloo too. I have bought Karkalo from Korean/Vietnamese store a couple of times. Good. I think you need methi and timmoor for this tarkari. **** Here are some others: If you like Katahar ko Tarkari, try canned Katahar. (Not the ripe ones though.) Raw whole can be bought at an Oriental store, but too much hassle. Canned is good enough. If you like Nagalo ko Tusa ko Tarkari, try canned SLENDER Bamboo Shoot. Note: Slender, not any aire gaire Tusa. I think Nigalo ko Tusa is common only in Pokhara-Baglung area. Rayo ko Saag: Gi Choy found at Oriental grocery store IS rayo-ko-saag. Again, happy thuk-neeling. |

Awesome inputs guys! I also miss Khasi ko sukuti and Mirga ko sukuti. They are really good with mula and golbheda. Did someone say Kurauni? My maiju used to seldom make it and when she did, I felt like I could finish the whole bottle of kurauni in a day! but alas she used to give us only a plate or two. I did try making kurauni here with two half & half milk and it did turn out good and I filled two sisi with kuraunu hoping to eat regularly but to my dismay the kurauni I put in the fridge ended up with "dhusi" so I had to discard them both. Isn't that sad? I also miss Mulaa ko dhajara. It is also called mula ko sukuti |

Bhunteji, rawadi bhaneko chahi it is more like khuwa but it is much richer in both thickness and sweetness. It seems to be very popular in western parts of Nepal as well as surrounding parts of India. Tulsipur kai kura garda I had the rawadi at the 4-way intersection where the roads from Ghorahi and Salyan meet. Supposedly it was a famous outlet there. On an unrelated note, at that time (1992), the road from Lamahi was not blacktopped yet and therefore it was a very dusty and bumpy ride. Oddly though, there was perhaps a 300 m stretch of blacktopped road in Tulsipur, from the 4-way intersection to the former Anchaladhis office. When were you last there? Ma ta Dang tira nagaeko pani 11 yrs bhaecha. |
