"NOV. 9 GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST ISRAEL'S "SEPARATION" WALL" In June 2002, Israel began building a massive wall through Palestine\'s West Bank, a wall designed to physically separate Palestinians and Israelis from one another. Falsely termed a \"security barrier\" by the Israeli military, the Wall is part of the largest land grab Israel has launched since it occupied the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem in 1967. Israel has used the Wall\'s construction to take over the lands of dozens of Palestinian communities. The Wall is dividing Palestinian cities, towns and villages, trapping Palestinians in open-air prisons reminiscent of apartheid South Africa and depriving them of access to their livelihoods, markets, hospitals, and schools. When completed, the Wall will in effect annex nearly 50% of the West Bank to Israel. Without active U.S. political and financial support, Israel would not be able to build this Wall and pursue its land grab. November 9th will kick off a week of international education and action to stop the Wall. On that day thousands will promote freedom for the Palestinian people and peace and security for all in a global day of action against the Wall. In response to a call from the Palestinian Environmental NGO Network and Palestine Monitor, United for Peace and Justice encourages all supporters of peace and justice to participate in this important day of action. UFPJ member groups like the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, the American Friends Service Committee, Al-Awda, Jews for Peace in Palestine and Israel, and SUSTAIN (Stop U.S. Tax Aid to Israel Now) are organizing activities across the country. Join UFPJ as we demand that the U.S. pressure the Israeli government to stop building and begin dismantling the Wall now! BACKGROUND At the end of July 2003, the Israeli government misleadingly announced the completion of the \"first phase\"-145 km from some 600km-of the Wall that it began erecting inside the West Bank in June 2002. In fact, bulldozers continue to ravage the northern West Bank by building buffer zones and expanding sections of the Wall. The Wall-falsely declared a \"security barrier\" by the Israeli military-is the largest land grab since the Occupation began in 1967; when completed the Wall will de-facto annex nearly 50% of the West Bank by the Israeli government. The Wall effectively annexes West Bank land on which Illegal Jewish-only settlements were built and confiscates prime resources, turning the West Bank into a series of cantons and enclaves in a bantustanization of the area. The Wall has already taken over the lands of dozens of Palestinian communities and stolen the livelihoods of thousands of families in the northern West Bank as well as in the Jerusalem and Bethlehem areas. The US Administration has yet to exert pressure on the Israeli government to stop building and start dismantling the Wall. It is up to US citizens to demand that the US Administration hold the Israeli Government accountable for international law, and to coordinate their actions to stop the Wall and promote freedom for the Palestinian people and peace and security for all. The communities affected by the Wall, under the umbrella of the Palestinian-led campaign against the Wall, declared November 9th the "International Day Against the Wall" to coincide with the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This date is also the sixty-fifth anniversary of Kristallnacht, the day rampaging mobs attacked Jews in the streets of Germany, Austria, and Poland, in their homes and at their places of work and worship. This November 9 let all who stand for peace and justice pause to remember those whose rights have been taken from them and stand up for freedom from occupation and equal rights for all.
