In this age when economists need to consult math journals and anthropologists need to have background in genetics and languages, and sociologists need to master statistics and basic computer programming, and neuroscientists are collaborating with Buddhist monks, isn't the whole idea of an exclusively 'social science library' a bit passe? Then again, the idea of this new library is a good one nontheless. oohi ashu ktm,nepal ************************ First library of social sciences opened Himalayan News Service Lalitpur, October 31 The Social Science Baha Library, the first library that will cater to students and researchers in social sciences, was inaugarated today at Patan Dhoka. A reference library, it has been set up with a view to encouraging and facilitating the study of social sciences in Nepal. Rajendra Pradhan, chairman of Social Science Baha said a good library has always been behind every masterpeice and is needed for the in-depth studies a researcher or a student has to carry out. Due to lack of a well stocked and well managed library reasearchers have to face obstacles. Librarian of Baha Indira Dali said there had been no dearth of information but there was lack of documentation and proper utilisation. According to her very few libraries in the state are properly managed. She said the government never gave priority to the maintinence of a library. The library has social science classics and theoretical works, contemporary works on social science, comprehensive collection of Nepal-related works, Journals, periodicals, monographs and academic papers. Dali said the library at present has around 9000 titles, around 4000 books, 5000 reports, and 208 journals. Twenty graduates of the sixth batch of the immersion course and intensive four month course on contemporary soical issues for professionals were awarded certificates. The baha is the only library that provides vast arrays of books and research papers on the field of social sciences such as economics, political science, history, sociology, anthropology, development studies, law, media studies, gender studies, natural resource management and other information and knowledge based activities. The library will remain open for seven hours from 12 noon on weekdays, from 1 to 5 pm on Saturdays and will remain closed on Mondays. A one-time membership fee of Rs 1000 (Rs 500 for students) and an annual fee of Rs 1000 (Rs 500 for students) will be charged. Temporary membership would cost Rs 100 per month.
