Seems like Nepali market has to offer anything you can take from here. So if you want to make it easier, just take lots of money. :)

Garfield, as nuts wrote, your presence there will be the biggest gift for your family. I used to take a few bags of candies, mix them up, and then repack them in small zip lock bags. My little nephews and neices really loved them (my extended family is pretty large).

As Vincent said, you can get virtually everything in Nepal these days, most often for much lower prices than here. It might be a good idea to take a piece of clothing and/or cosmetics to your immediate family members. Just think of some simple items that they may like. What counts more is your presence and thoughtfulness rather than the face value of the gift. Just my 2 cents hai..hope you have a great trip.
Rosie Posted on 09-Nov-03 09:09 AM

Hey, you could take a palm pilot or a laptop for your dad...or even a digital camera for the whole family 'cause electronic gadgets are pretty expensive in Nepal, isn't it? And for your mom, you could take a nice watch or a nice pearl or diamond set...or make up...she'll love it.
ameeshaa Posted on 09-Nov-03 12:58 PM

it depends on how much u wanna spend to your family. there r lots of stuff u can take as a gift such as:

for family- shampoo, face cream , body lotion, cordelss phone, vidio camara, digital camara

for sister- t-shirts, shorts, lipstick, makeup, ( clnique, loreal, oil of olay, covergirl etc)

for mom- bags, shoes, anti- age define cream, lotion for mature skin, vitamin capsules

for brother- t-shirts( made in usa) shoes (dr.martin),running shoes( nike)

for dad- perfume(shafari, boss, estee lauder, lancome etc), wine( black level) lotion

for all all other women- cheap but brand name lipstickand make up( loreal, covergirl, olay, naturagana etc, watch, bags

for all other man T-shirst, (nike addidas, tommoy hilfiger, polo brand etc) watch, perfume (cheapone)

for kids- chocolate, dressess , shoes, vidio game, caroke cds, thin gold chain, toys etc

hope this will help for u....

ameeshaa Posted on 09-Nov-03 01:03 PM

nuts , yes , ur right. family will be happy to see u rather than gift. but do u feel happy

without taking any gift for your family? kanchuss, makhichuss, chucho, selfish & bla bla bla, bla...........

i don't know others gali.......
llkathmandu Posted on 09-Nov-03 01:12 PM

I am in Europe, and travel once a year to home.

If you want to take my suggestion, like nuts suggested, don't take anything worthy. You could buy cheaper electronic things there (which is espensive in Nepal), but if you have to pay the custom for it, oh la la .. (one of my friend didn't even found his flat-TV set deposited to clear it later from Custom)! Unless you have somebody who will help you go thru green channel without checkings... I suggest you to not to take anything special.

But if you wish, then cloths won't be a bad idea. And make-up things etc. (but believe me, this Indian make-up best suits the South Asian skin, ;-) my wife says so..)

Anyway, wish you a nice journey, and be safe.
ru Posted on 09-Nov-03 01:21 PM

for people waiting for the gifts from US-retuned relative/friend, take what you can afford and yet looks more expensive than what you pay for...for people waiting for for, once in Nepal, give them all the love that make it worth the wait...

items with college name (if you go to school) would give gifts some personal touch, esp. as one can get almost anything there....also do not take adidas/ Nike shit cause you get similar products at a lower price out there....so the "wow"ness will be less than the price paid for the products.
ameeshaa Posted on 09-Nov-03 02:16 PM

ikathmandu, i don't know why your wife likes indain makeup may be u never give her

money to buy american cosmetics that 's why.

belive me, the quality of cosmetic here is far better than indian.
llkathmandu Posted on 09-Nov-03 02:55 PM

Hi Ameesha,
Being a male I cannot know what all those things woman need, but it was what she told me I wrote here, maybe you feel other way.
By the way, my wife was with me to Europe a couple of times, if that is what you mean.

ameeshaa Posted on 09-Nov-03 03:10 PM

oh iam sorry, i thought u r in usa
KALANKISTHAN Posted on 09-Nov-03 03:21 PM

Who wants American cosmetics when you can have "dabur aawala kesh tel", charlie perfume, chandan body spray, vico-vajradanti aayurvedic cream for your pimples and above all, fair and LOVELY oooh! Even Haadi-ko-mosho-potya jasti jagaltini sauni ki chori turned to Aishwarya Rai just in a month!

Yettikai Kalanki Bhutukkai bhaa ho ra?

Going back to Garfields, I am with Nuts! If you don't like going to Nepal empty handed, stick to ameeesha's list -- sounds appealing! Go after thanksgiving though! Black Friday -- remember??? Yess, you can save buck or two! :P
Arnico Posted on 09-Nov-03 08:18 PM

For younger siblings, cousins, etc.: dictionaries, one-volume encyclopedias, or if relevant "how to apply to colleges in the US" type books, or any other books that might interest them...

Go to bargain bookstores or bargain sections or larger bookstores, and find nice good quality books for a few bucks. Especially single-volume encyclopedias can keep the little ones busy for days reading about the wide world outside of Nepal.
ameeshaa Posted on 09-Nov-03 10:30 PM

oh common kalikasthan, r u still using dabor ko aula kesh tel , & vico bajarjanti? this is not 80s honey.

this is 21st century.your kam garne kanchi or kancha even won't use dabar ko aula kesh

tel and vico aurobedic now a days. people use hair color instead of mehndi,

they use gel instead of aula tel. they use face wash instead of soap. if u

don't trust me ask with your bro & sis when u call them.

ameeshaa Posted on 09-Nov-03 10:35 PM

Garfild , do u need more idea? may i suggest something other stuff too or that is enough

for u? what is your budget though?
Bhunte Posted on 09-Nov-03 10:36 PM

ameesha, nariwal ko tel ni??
KaLaNkIsThAn Posted on 10-Nov-03 02:12 AM

Oh common Ameeshaa, now don't say that. If I were a girl, I would have imported all those stuffs directly from Nepal. They use hair color and yet, look at their hair -- "paral ma aago lagda laagdai nibhaako jasto". Insted of that, we use "hydrogen peroxide". 2 rupaiya ko bottle, result? Kalanki ma hulchul. Face wash? eh.. what about detol sabun -- buy one get one free plus you have a chance to win bumper "house" upahar in Tatopaani? Don't go by the fancy bottles you bump into K-mart, dollar store or Big-Lots. All those face washes with that 21st century fragrance are nothing but liquid Mayalu saabun wrapped up in seushi bottles. Napattyae ask my brother and sisters eh!! (bhe po :P)
ru Posted on 10-Nov-03 02:18 AM

kudos KaLaNkIsThAn

facts aside..that was the most hilarious stuff I've encountered in a long time..."liquid Mayalu saabun wrapped up in seushi bottles."...where do you come up with these..
garibmaila Posted on 10-Nov-03 02:21 AM

" eh.. what about detol sabun -- buy one get one free plus you have a chance to win bumper "house" upahar in Tatopaani?"

that was great!!

ameesha, u must be really rich! why don`t you donate some of your money for the poor?!
bhanja Posted on 10-Nov-03 04:51 AM

Hi Folks

Interesting thread. Garfield good luck and have a safe journey to Nepal and back. About the gift ideas wow what an creative mind people have. All the ideas are mentioned on this thread.

I would also agree with the people who say you should take gifts with you. And for sure thats what i did also and i am still paying off the damage i made last year visit. LOL

Ameesha, nice ideas but will you do the same when you are going to Nepal for a visit? Will you take those items that you mentioned above to all the dear ones?

Nuts, you are right they will be happy to see you but they also expect some gifts from you for sure.

Kalikasthan, May be we no more use the items you specified but there are lots of people in nepal still using those. Everybody is not lucky and cant afford the "Sophisticated Cosmetics".

Finally, Good luck to Garfield. Oops almost forgot to say "GHANTI HERERA HADDI NILNU" Dont just spend the $$ you earned just to be nice infront of others knowing it will give you a hard time later paying off and managing your standard in the USA.

Thanks.

Cheers
NepaliThito
SITARA Posted on 10-Nov-03 09:26 AM

Don't laugh guys but,

I consider it part of my "must haves" for my mom: socks, socks and sock! Also, warm gloves, matching knit cap and a fleece light weight jacket to keep warm in Paoush/Maagh jaado. Cosmetics, I don't find very functional.
ameeshaa Posted on 10-Nov-03 02:03 PM

Bhuntee- CHEEEEE NARI WAL KO TEL, TORI KO TEL TA KASTO GANUCHA .AJAKAL TEL LAUNE CALAN NAI KAHA CHA RA? don't worry about tel
nepali thito , of course i would take those stuff as i mention i find that is better idea than others.

kalikastsn, u mention hydrozen for hair. i remembered once my small bro used hydrozen on his hair. my dad asked what the hell happend to your hair? then my bro replied; dad , malai vitamin ko kami bhayo, i need to drink pineapple juice. then my dad gave him money to buy a pineapple juice.
KaLaNkIsThAn Posted on 10-Nov-03 02:29 PM

hehe Ameeshaa;

Once I used hydrogen peroxide in my hair, next thing I knew was, my mom dragged me to Barber shop nearby and I had almost mudulle khappar! :( Even Sauni ki chori didn't recognise me until I showed her my trademark braces and my hanumaan chaati-chirera-mutu-dekham pose :)

So the great gift Idea, a bottle of Hydrogen peroxide for everyone in the family. Eh! One liter size for ladies, jumbo size for your biggest crush and quarter size for the rest in the family! Take some touch-up hair colors too... so that everyone in your family will be technicolored. eh... (kiddin' -- garfield rishaula ni :P)
Bhunte Posted on 10-Nov-03 03:36 PM

ameesa, tori ko tel malai pani man pardaina, tara nariwal ko tel kam se kam ek patak layera ta hera.

It reminds me one day sitting behind a Sri Lankan gal who had "nariwal ko tel" in her long dark hair. The whole classroom was filled with the aroma of coconut oil, and people liked it indeed.

Ameesha, will you try it now? Please....
garfield Posted on 12-Nov-03 11:54 PM

thanks a lot guys for all o' ur ideas.. electronics to nariwol ko teel, this thread got really interesting.

Contour Pillows! My mom found it comfortable and her neck pain has reduced tremendously. Apparently they are hard to find in kathmandu.
chipledhunga Posted on 13-Nov-03 10:19 PM

Garfield, aama kai kura garda you may want to take some calcium suppliments. They have significantly helped to reduce my mom's knee pains. A few of my friends also send them home regularly. Apparently (at least that are as effective) they are not easily available in Nepal.
