Trauma of reporting rape

Victims are often afraid of what will happen when they report the rape
Most rape victims never report the crime to police.
Of those who do, the majority will have no idea what level of support to expect when they set about finding help. .....

...and what more, 'rape kit', not without its own limitations, is useful only for a short duration. Often, my my experience with counselling such victims (although that is not too many), tells me that the victims tend to "clean themselves out first" if indeed they immediately react to it. That leaves the chances of rape reporting and, subsequently, putting guilty to prison slim....and justice to the victim...insignificantly small.

common.. people have such a negative attitude towards rape victims..

someone i know claimed she was molested as a child by someone in the family.. the poor girl was beaten very badly by her parents and told never to bring the topic up again. why??
baadal Posted on 13-Nov-03 07:16 AM

hmm, there are so many plausible reasons for the negative attitude towards rape survivors. where does one start? maybe one of the strongest reasons is the whole "blaming the victim" attitude -- somehow the person who got raped "asked" for it...was she wearing a short skirt? what was she doing walking home after dark? why was she alone with a man? assumptions about male rape victims are there too. and then if the perpetrator was someone they knew then surely she must have tempted them....arghhh, the list goes on.

another aspect of the attitude might be high value placed on women's virginity/chastity and the shame attached to rape. somehow, she should have protected herself better. see the "blame the victim" thought creeping in here too.....and with our society, as there is very little space to speak about sex and issues related to it, there is virtually no space to speak about rape.......

badaal ji, my friend was 5 years old when this happened to her. now what skirt or what seduction technique do we blame her for?

the 'shame' brought on the family of the victim is supposedly more harmful than the physical/psychological trauma of the victim
such hypocritical bullshit
people care more about their 'naam' in 'society' than their children's well-being
