The Maoist are looking for way out, and they think they will get it through violence... A couple of things: Supporting republicanism does not mean supporting Maoists. The Maoists of Nepal have crossed their boundaries and should not be regarded as political forces anymore. They have introduced a gun-toting culture in Nepal and this will have a very long term impact in the country: an organized crime culture is in place now and will haunt Nepalis for decades to come. Although it happens to be the demand put forth by Maoists, the only solution for the political impasse in Nepal at this juncture is an election for constituent assembly. I know some of the folks in Sajha seeing this are sayingnot again! How naïve! Bullshit&.etc. I do not hold any grudge against them. Everyone has the right to speak their minds and that is the beauty of democracy. This is a right time for Nepali people to decide their fate through an election that is acceptable to everyone. The Maoists have entered one way street and they know it very well that they cannot turn back easily without making the road broad and changing it into two-way street. Only constituent assembly will allow this to happen. An election for constituent assembly does not mean throwing the monarchy and multi-party system altogether in a sink hole. An election for constituent assembly is necessary to bring the Maoist into main-steam. Otherwise, these people will continue killing more innocent people left and right until they feel they feel safe enough to return. Those who believe in talks are the most naïve of all. Dont try to fit a squire peg into a round hole. Talk with the Maoist is just that. Does that mean chase them with the guns until they run out of breath? Does that mean smoke them out of their caves and mow them down when they get out? No. These are not possibilities. As Samrat said in his article, we cannot afford to bring the Maoist to power given our geopolitical reality. Although the Chinese authority is saying that they do not support the Maoists, it should come as no surprise to anyone if Chinese government became the first nation to recognize Maoist state in Nepal should the Maoist come to power. Only constituent assembly will prevent that scenario. Id be willing to elaborate on this argument later, if one is interested in doing so. If constituent assembly does not happen, the Maoists will not give up because they will not trust anything coming out of this constitution in which they have no faith. And this constitution or any amendment made to this constitution will not guarantee them a safe landing, which they are looking for I think, and I believe an election for constituent assembly will give them that assurance. We can argue for dialogues and talks until the cows come home but that will only add more death data to the statistics we have now. For those who believe that we cannot afford to do away with monarchy, because it is our culture and we need to preserve that. Fine. But cultures must evolve. Cultures are living organism and must follow the same law of nature. Further more, Nepals monarchy is only a few hundred years old. In France, and Russia the monarchy was more then 1000 year old when it was ousted. Did they throw out their culture? Ill let you decide. I wanted to talk about Indias role in this thread but I gotta go right now& Ill talk about it later. Saunak.
