Brigadier General Sagar Bahadur Pandey was killed in a Maoist ambush at Bhainse in Makwanpur Saturday morning, senior security personnel told Nepalnews. Rebels ambushed his motor vehicle.

He is the senior most military officer killed by the insurgents. The source confirmed that his driver and another person were also killed. Another source said six more army men were killed and several injured.

Previously, Maoists shot dead Colonel Kiran Basnet at his home in the capital three months ago after the rebels withdrew from the last round of peace talks. nepalnews.com mr/rh/br Nov 15

Very sad indeed, my prayers to all those whose lives were cut short today.

Shukla jyu, was General Pandey in any way related to the king? A news item in the CNN claims that he was a family relative of the king.

I don't know of any direct royal connection. It is quite possible because after all they are descendatns of historical Kalu(?) Pande clan. Also may be from his brothers' marriages.
I have been out of Nepal for more than 25 years and my only connection to Sagar since then had been in meeting him whenever I visited Nepal every few years. Somehow he always found out that I was in Kathmandu and came from Bhainse to take me to restaurant!!

Here is the CNN version of the story that says Gen. Pandey's wife also died with him:

Nepalese general killed by rebels
Saturday, November 15, 2003 Posted: 8:56 AM EST (1356 GMT)

KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- A Nepalese general, whose family had close ties with Nepal's royal family, has been killed in a Maoist ambush, officials said.

Brig. Gen. Sagar Bahadur Pandey, his wife and two bodyguards died Saturday when an army jeep ran into a landmine near Bhim Phedi, about 190 kilometers south of Kathmandu, a senior police officer said.

Twelve other army personnel following them in a separate vehicle were wounded in the ambush, which took place at 3:30 p.m. (0915 GMT) Saturday, the officer said.

Royal Nepal Army spokesman Col. Deepak Gurung said that the "facts were still sketchy" but confirmed the general's death.

Pandey is the most senior army officer to have been targeted by the Maoists, who want to replace Nepal's constitutional monarchy by a republic. They consider Nepal's monarchy regressive and feudalistic.

Since the peace talks between the rebels and the government collapsed in August, the Maoists have made assassination bids on three senior army officers.

Two of them, including Pandey, have died while a third one had a close call. Analysts say Gen. Pandey's death could be a Maoist response to the royalist government, which has in recent weeks gone on major military offensive against the rebels.

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
May the deceased souls rest in peace.

With the number of people being killed increasing everyday, I wonder, what the RNA is up to. What plan they have planned, and how they plan to implent.

With all available logistics and knowledge, RNA by now very well knows if it can win the maoist insurgents. If they are convinced that the maoists are unconquerable, it is time for them to give up and surrender. It is better to live a miserable life than to live with a feeble hope.
isolated freak Posted on 15-Nov-03 10:32 AM

DWI,

I totally agree with you. Some people ought to realize the whole difference that exists between accidents/mishaps and intentional killings.

SC dai,

As far as I know, again, I can be wrong, no Royals ever married Kalu Pandey's descendants. So, I also wonder how come the late Brig. was related to the King. He died while serving the nation, while protecting OUR interests. Salute to him and his wife. Also, let's wish a speedy recovery to the ones wounded.

There's a tendency among some Sajhaites who do not have any academic knowledge of Politics to quickly reach to the conclusion that sicne the RNA means Royal Nepalese Army, it only protects the interests of the Royal Family. This is such an uniformed conclusion. Even the Swedish Army--and mind you, Sweden is a democratic country--goes by the name/title of Royal Swedish Army.

Deep condolence to the families of nation serving citizens and I pray for the peace of departed souls.

When I wake up and browse for news, I don't find anynews other than violences and killings escalating day by day in Nepal. This must STOP.

garibjanata Posted on 15-Nov-03 11:20 AM

Sagar was married to some Sahebjyu Devendra Bikram Shah's daughter. I remember meeting him, his wife and his two children in March 1989 - we were in the same flight from KTM till L.A. His son was 5-6 months old and daughter around 2-3 years. That was to be our first and last meeting. I also got to know from my co-travellers(my parents) that he was my relative.
Robert Frost Posted on 15-Nov-03 12:30 PM

My heartfelt and deepest condolences to Gen. Pandey and sympathies to his family. he has died while serving for his nation. May his soul rest in peace and may God give his family the strength to bear this tragedy....!

prawin Posted on 15-Nov-03 02:53 PM

my condolences to all bereaved.

surprising-- no one mentions the families of the deceased driver, the widows of other soilders, the parents and children and rfiends of every single person--Maobadi, RNA or an innocent bystander, who died yesterday.

so much for "concerned citizens."

DWI-- RNA has perpetrated violence of various kinds upon innocent people, and this incident alone, or any amount of history, will not suffice to efface those facts. just as no amount of history will give a reason to forgive teh Maoists for their own violence. i think your stance is prompted by grief, but more than that, a too naive and "Gorkhali" sense of seeing the world.

in The Rebel, Camus suggests that every person willing to take a life in defense of a Value must eventually give up his or her own life, and in no other way is violence against another person justified.

but BRB and Pushpa Kamal Dahal are cowards, therefore they must be facilitated to such an end where they can justify this much of bloodshed.

but that would call each of us--for out expressed or tacit consent to violence--through complacence, through active advocacy against or for either the RNA or the Maoists, to the scaffolding, because each of us has blood on our hands.

the only reasonable thing to do is to oppose all powers that be at present in Nepal--the failed political parties, the Monarchy and its Army, and the murderous Maoists.

my voice is for all fathers and mothers who lost a child each yesterday, and for the streets that the deceased walked, and the promises they made to their friends and children.

Very sad. May the departed souls rest in peace.

The more we look at it, it is a futile war. Nepalese fighting Nepalese in a power struggle of some smart leaders.

We all know there are problems but there must be a peaceful, non violent solution.

We should probably plead with both parties to abandon violence not that people are already not doing it. Just add to the voice.

If the so called Maoist leaders are so talented, can't the talent be better utilised in a constructive role rather than a killing spree?
akela Posted on 15-Nov-03 04:40 PM

Maoists criminals should be finished soon.
oys_chill Posted on 15-Nov-03 07:43 PM

My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of all the deceased. We can curse all we want to government and the maoists.....but what good does it do?

Some want to start it from scratch, some want to start it from the chair.......OM shanti OM!! we can only evaluate the devastation this violence has caused in the family when it gets personal. I just hope, and that's all we can do, HOPE, that these maoists, govt, army police and all the people associated do know that there's nothing you can replace this fragile precious thing called LIFE with. The more the killing, the more the generation of vengeance grow in both fronts!
DWI Posted on 15-Nov-03 10:11 PM

Prawin,
It might have come out of grief, I am not still sure, but let's not analyze this thread to prove our prudence or otherwise. Please, just take the moment to offer your condolence. I don't want to prove that I am right here, it is too trivial to what we have lost yesterday.
arnico Posted on 15-Nov-03 11:13 PM

May the souls of EVERYONE who passed away rest in peace.

This attack has hit close to home... Sagar Kaka is a relative.

To answer a previous question:
If he were related to the royal family it would not be from his father's side...perhaps through marriage (It never occured to me to ask).

Meanwhile, although on a personal level this is really sad, and I wish my cousins much strength in dealing with this loss and hope no one else ever has to go through their fate... this event does NOT yet change my views of RNA as being an institution that I do not support. I am sick of rude treatment at RNA checkposts and even more sick of RNA's ongoing abuse of human rights.

nepali_bhangera Posted on 16-Nov-03 03:06 AM

I am a relative too...

We're all under shock... I would like to send my prayers to the deceased and their families.

Even more shocking is the possibility that it may have been an army insider job. Details are still unclear, but several suspicious details are emerging, including the fact that the explosive used appears to have been manufactured at the plastics factory that he was in charge of...
