Folk singer Jhalakman passes away

KATHMANDU, Nov 23 - Senior Nepalese folk singer, Jhalakman Gandharva has passed away. He was 68.
Jahlakman had been suffering from asthma and was rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon but died while undergoing treatment in the evening.
Jhalakman shot to fame with "Amai le sodhlini khoi chora bhanlin" in which he sang about agony of Nepalese soldiers fighting in foreign land.
His condition had worsened in the last year years, forcing him to remain away from singing. He had been spending his retired life in Kirtipur.
Jalakman's songs reflected the difficulties and hardship of of life in rural Nepal and had continued the long tradition of folklore singing of his family. (rk)

JHALAKMAN had been my idol ever since I began to understand the deep meanings of Nepali gaaine songs -- since I was about 16. Over the years, even though I never possessed a sureelo voice to sing songs, thanks to the inspiration from JHALAKMAN and his songs, I became quite an avid imposter of a gaine.
May his soul rest in peace, and may his songs continue to give the urbanites a glimpse into the MAARMIK yet colorful lives of the simple "gaamles" living in rural areas...

"Aama le sodhlin ni khoi chora bhani.."
This must be the most heart-touching folk song I have ever heard. I can not recall any other song that presents such a real picture of our rural folks, particularly those of lahure families. Everytime I hear the last line of the song "baba runchan ta barsa din aama jugai bhari lai hajura", I almost break into tears.
Some of his other great legacies include Radhapiyari ko, Au basam thakai marum, Khaam ta bhane suntala paani etc. As Dautari rightly states, "One of the brightest stars in Nepali folk musical heritage has set on the horizon."

Jhalakman ko sarir marera gaye pani Jhalakman unka geetharuma bachi rahane chhan sadhai.
parmeswor le sri gandharva ko aatma lai chir shanti pradan garun.

More than his genuine folk songs, Jhalak Man is ahead of all his co-singers for his genuine folk voice and uncorrupted accent and pronunciation of pure folk tongue. We have lost a priceless and timeless voice and not to mention a living history of Nepali folk music and an unwritten history of what it is to live in a slowly weakening casteist society.

Jhalakman mero samjhana maa aayirahenechhan jaba ma
(1) sanguri ko ukalo chad-dei garda dekhchu pasina le bhijdei bhari bokiraheka bhariya daiharu.
(2) dhuja dhuja bhayeka daura ra surwal ma jaba dekhchu lapetiyeka sana sana bachhaharu
(3) Jaba dekhchu thichiyeka, latyayiyeka ti talla bhanine jaatharu, jasko ragat ra pasina Koshi ko pani jastai bina mulya bagera gaye.
(4) Chautari maa basda jaba sunchhu lahare pipal susayiraheko - tala bagiraheko khola ko dhoon sagain.
Nepal ka harek jhupra ra tahara / jangal ra paharaharu ma gunjine
Jhalakman garibi, shoshan, ra peeda ko awaj ho. Timi nepali hridayama sadhain jivit chhau.

Jhalakman chola narahe pani oohanko samjhana sadhai rahi rahane chha. Aatma ko chir shanti ko kamana gardachhu.
BTW, how many of you guys have noticed the song "Aamaile sodlin.." is a sensored one? The newer version of song was recorded with Music Nepal not too long ago. The original song recorded with Ratna Recording was much better in quality. That song is banned now because of one line lyric that says "Raja.ko hukum lau napaine chhutti.."
