I remember getting abused at The Nepal Digest site a few years back, back when they sent it out as e-mail. Then Sajha came along. And I remember the hot waters from here. But then for the most part, it was fun. So much so, it can get addictive.

I have been on a hiatus. I have not been a regular here at all. Maybe I will make a comeback. I doubt I will be as regular as I was when I first started here: my work visa had expired, and I had all the time in the world. The INS here works at the speed of the Nepal TelCo, it sometimes feels.

I will be writing about topics that catch my fancy along the way. Topics in Nepali politics, topics emerging from my travels, topics of social interactions in diverse settings, topics of prejudices along the ethnic and gender lines, fun topics, funny topics, topics culled from down the memory lane, musings, generally speaking.

I have often wondered about a place like Sajha. Can it hope to become a July 4 24/7? I have met people here who I already know offline. Heck, some for years. I can’t wait to forge new friendships among my readership. So leave comments, shoot me an e-mail, or call me, whatever catches your fancy. But I am weary. Does it happen? Can it happen? Do we come here precisely to hide ourselves? Is this no water cooler? I am desperately hoping, I can get to know people. As in, taking the conversation over to the phone. One enriching the other. Are there people out there willing to take me on the offer?

I recently embarked upon the most exciting phase on my career path ever. Looks to me like I might be the only graduate of my high school or college who is actively dreaming seven and eight figures. Not because I am the smartest, or the most hardworking, or born with a silver spoon in my mouth, hardly, but for the simple fact that I made that leap, the decision to choose business ownership rather than a job as my vehicle.

The promise of the Internet has not even begun. Much awaits. Heck, another major topic for conversation. Let's get on the phone, and let's talk. You got free nights and weekends?

TIPS FOR SAJHA NEWBIES

Kurakani is the only section that matters. So venture upon other sections of the site at your own risk.

It might appear that the same few people keep coming back again and again, but let not that fool you. Many many more people come visit the site. They read, they don't write. They bark, they bite. They talk about it endlessly offline. This is the "Nagaland" of the Nepali diaspora.

Ashu and Pachim sometimes get along, sometimes they don't get along. Changing seasons. No news there.

Don't p*ss off San. He could delete your message, your photo, your thread, your entire cyber existence (if, like most Sajhaites this is the only place you go online).

The Sajhaites talk about many things important and unimportant, mostly unimportant, but most vociferously about themselves. Their longest threads are when they start writing about each other.

Never worry about grammar, puctuation, syntax, script, spelling, language, yours or that of others.

Change password and username periodically. Keep more than one username current at any one time.

Be afraid, be very afraid. Sitara is everywhere at the site. :-) (She is quite pleasant actually.)

M.P. is unelected, but he writes with the authority of an Election Commissioner.

NK logged off one fine day, forgot her password, and never found her way back. (Refer above.)

Most Americans get their daily news watching the Jay Leno show, most Nepalis outside the country get their hourly news at Sajha.

The archives are treacherous.

There is a MoneyToNepal.com but no MoneyFromNepal.com, except in rare circumstances.

Banners can be seen floating. Let not that perturb you. Sleep tight anyway.

Beware of the supposed anonymity here. People are known to meet here and get married at the nearest Baptist church.

There is money to be made at the site. Ask for donations.

Don't laugh out too loud. You can be heard across the screen. And smile only gently. Or a few might get scared. With webcam technology et al.

Never, never, ever edit what you might have written. Post at the earliest. The site runs on IST: Internet Standard Time.

Cease other bodily fuctions while at the site, all except those to do with your finger tips. Or you might cause accidents.

M.P. Darshan: A Dashain Party Monologue

To quench my long held curiosities, I ventured upon the area. I had done a quick Google search on M.P. and had been led to the East Coast, more particularly the Philly area. The outskirts of the city, the quiet was dense. As the trees. I parked my oversize vehicle: you know how it is with parking these days, especially when you have a vehicle that is really comfy inside. It was already close to midnight, but I had the rest of the weekend to locate, identify, and possibly get to know him, if that was possible, philosophically speaking. It was to be a long walk back to my vehicle two days later, but I am not sure how I got there is the first place. Did I take a cab? Did I hitchhike that final five minute segment? I don't recall at all. But then there are other details in that same bin. I do remember seeing many, many, many trees though. Many people, many trees. Trees in the dark, people on the dance floor, when the music goes through your body like an electric current, and you wonder, is that M.P. there, or that other one, is M.P. one of those girls that just dropped by from some other college? One of those Wharton guys? That noise in the kitchen, is that M.P.? Or that guy who flew over from the West Coast, the Bay Area, to be particular, is that M.P.? An online handle can take so many offline forms. Is there room for imagination, as in, specific imagination? Is he a freshman, a recent graduate, someone awaiting his OPT papers? Or that guy who will be up until 3 AM discussing his business plan? Or the outrageous drunk? Or the Public Safety people? Byt the time it was time for me to leave - "I might be back for lunch" - I was hoping I would have a sketch: long, unruly hair, dark glasses, bulky belly, sexy nostrils. But nada, nada, nada, none. Neti, neti. He made his sole appearance at the party, but the lighting was dim, and I must have missed him, or he was one of the people I did meet, but could not tell one from the other. Anyways, the search goes on. Back to work.

I received two calls within hours of launching this thread, one from Canada, another from Virginia. Thank you callers.

This is an experiment. Considering Sajha is a community, I wonder how many Sajhaites will pick up the phone to continue the conversation here at the site. Getting to know each other better should enrichen the conversation here. Or so I think.

Within hours of launching this thread, I got a call from Canada, another from Virginia. I had to wake up to pick up the phone. So the experiment worked. But since then this thread has slid down and has become invisible. And have not heard from anyone since then. How is that for an experiment?
paramendra Posted on 03-Jan-04 02:59 PM

Got another call from Dallas after my last post. Great. But, folks, I am not trying to start a fan club. The experiment is that Sajha can be a venue to forge new friendships. "I like your articles" might be a good start. But let's have more than one short conversation. Let's get to know each other.

I have not been to Sajha in a while. But looks like much editing has been done here. Amounts to censorship.....
paramendra Posted on 26-Jan-04 02:22 AM

I came here to key a humor piece on HahooGuru b/c I met him in person on Saturday. But my earlier three pieces are gone. One on MP. Another on Sajha. Another intro piece. And that makes me reluctant to write what I came to write. Sanman, what's happening? What happened to free speech?
San Posted on 26-Jan-04 06:36 AM

Hi Paramendra,
Nothing has happened to free speech. Free speech had to be archived; since unlike in a real world democracy, sajha database cannot handle unlimited amount of free speech :)

Please check on the links from the sajha homepage to the archives of 2003 and one from before.

Regards,
San

paramendra Posted on 26-Jan-04 11:37 AM

Thank god, San. The archives have my past pieces. Otherwise I was about to bellow "regression" at Sajha! :-)

Regression in Sandom. Would have made quite a headline.

This thread is an experiment. I would like Sajhaites in the US to have the option to call me and possibly become friends. Why not! Online interaction is between real people. When real people meet, sometimes they start friendships.

Anyways, I got to meet HahooGuru in person this Saturday.

Why doesn't Hahoo Guru do any hahoos anymore? Is it because of the regression?
