i don't think it is available in Kathmandu. i have wireless card in my laptop i don't see any wireless networks
tarkari Posted on 09-Dec-03 12:59 PM

I think the wi-fi set up there is wireless local area network. Besides they are using 2.4 GHz blue tooth technology on top of 802.11 wireless protocol which has limited sphere to cover. Who know if you have 802.11 compatible wireless access point build in to your laptop, you may detect some signal while you are trekking around pokhara. So, if you want to venture the thrill of wireless internet access sneak around the lake of phewa and turn on your laptop.. just logged into sajha.com and drop some note

good luck gaz.

raru ji,

Thanks for the info. I think duo pun / sherpa have shown the feasiblity of wireless communication in Remote nepal and connect to the world. I think government can set up such communication facilities to provide distant internet services and experiment with VoIP for the voice communication as well. I bet this will be much cheaper and faster access than conventional phone system.

Nepali 'asylum seeker' commits suicide in Belgium

Prem Prasad Subedi, 32, a Nepali asylum seeker, has reportedly committed suicide in Gent of Belgium on December 8, a statement posted in the Maoists' website said Wednesday.

Subedi was a resident of Myagdi in Nepal, said the statement posted by a pro-Maoist organisation named "Nepalese People's Progressive Forum, Belgium."

"We, such people, who are unable to resist in the country have been declining to Europe and elsewhere seeking asylum," the statement said.

"While our pleas are rejected, that forces us either to be forced by the authority to go to the country or we have to leave voluntarily. In any conditions, our life is in danger," it said.

The statement said Subedi's case was dismissed and was either forced to return to Nepal or was forced by the Authority to leave the country.

Subedi, who had a son, two daughters and a wife, was an activist of the Forum, the statement said.

Sad, This is a partial result of the flow of nepalese in europe for money. People comes with illusion . But when they reach here everything is below their imagination,

These days belgium is safe heaven for asylum seeker. Better than london even. Then there comes a german. Due to the strict refugee regulation act and racism in germany everyone is flowing towards the belgium.

Such incident happens many in europe. But get red european passport after having succeed in such cases even within a month.

I feel pity to hear that a nepalese committed suicide in Belgium. May his soul reacg heaven and his family get strength to cope the difficult time.

I somehow feel that i must have meet this person in Belgium, as i too lived for a while in the city of Gent and was studying there. i remember one nepalese seeking asylum used to speak with me (as a person he was nice and i found him honest in what he said to me about his background in Nepal), and we often met by chance on the streets/phone shops and he said he is from Myagdi. Most nepalese had a tendency to be indifferent with we students, but that guy from Myagdi was always happy to meet with me. his apartment was very close to my laboratory. I remember his asylum application was rejected for first time and he had chance to appeal for the second (and that is the last chance one can do) according to the Belgian law.

most of these folks claimed to be maoist affected, but were in fact not. Probably Because of that, These folks were not in touch with the Nepalese embassy, but we students were always invited to embassy functions. one of the times i met this Myagdi guy, he said that he needs a nepalese nagarikta or so, and requested if i could talk with embassy people about it (actually a gathering was shortly being held in Brussels and i was going there). I did say him that i will ask the authorities about the possibility, bt i was equally aware that many nepalese citizenship/passport was sold to nationals from other nations (particularly pakistinas) living in Belgium, and nepalese paper would greatly help them to get accepted as refugees, because of growing Maost problem in Nepal. Even one Belgian minister had resigned in connection of sending weapons to Nepal, which many politicians there considered it against democracy.

But folks, if is very unlikely that the asylum seekers are really the deserving ones (here i mean the maoist affected people). To end up in Belgium, most of them pay to brokers and that can be upto NRs 500,000. I don think any maost affected person from nepalese rural community can afford that amount of money. Belgium has been the ending place of neps going to europe for making money.

At least to me,, none of these neps are true asylum deserving people. Belgium has huge problem with neps seeking asylum there. I think Belgium has one of the biggest refugee problem, because of some highly democrative loop holes in their rules.
