International Nepali Literary Society (INLS), Washington D.C. held its 11th annual general assembly at Leesylvania State Park on July 15th, 2001 on the occasion of Bhanu Jayanti. The event was participated by more than 200 local Washingtonians and representatives from various local social organizations. The event included tribute to Nepalese great poet Bhanu Bhakta Acharya. Among the people who paid the tribute were Charge De Affairs of Royal Nepalese Embassy, Mr. Dinesh Bhattarai; Newly elected President of Association of Nepalis in the Americas (ANA), Mr. Krishna Nirola; President of Nepal Human Rights Committee-USA (NHRC-USA), Dr. Balaram Aryal; President of Nepal Youth Organization (NYO), Kabindra Sitoula; Producer of Sagarmatha Television (STV), Mr. Ram Kharel; President of George Mason University - Nepalese Student Association (GMU-NSA), Purushottam Subedi; President of Kaligandaki Entertainment, Ananda Regmi; Chairman of INLS Board of Trustee, Mr. Hom Nath Subedi; Social worker, Mr. Ram Malakar; members of the INLS executive committee and other well wishers of the Nepali literary tradition. President of America Nepal Society (ANS), Mr. Praveen Rana was also present at the program.

The program was moderated by Mr. Bhim Regmi and chaired by Mr. Hom Nath Subedi. Charge De Affairs, Royal Nepalese Embassy, Mr. Dinesh Bhattarai was the guest speaker. Chair of the INLS Election Committee, Mr. Basu Satyal, announced newly elected executive committee for 2001-2002 term as follows: President, Bhim Regmi; Vice President, Purushottam Subedi; General Secretary; Govinda Giri; Secretary, Ram Tilija; Treasurer, Ashima Thapa.

INLS general secretary, Mr. Purushottam Subedi gave the welcome speech. Mr. Laxman Stayal introduced Poet Bhanu Bhakta and highlighted poet's contribution to the field of Nepali language and literature. Representatives from various local organizations gave their views about importance of celebrating Bhanu Jayanti and preservation of Nepali language, literature, art and culture. Newly elected INLS president, Mr, Bhim Regmi presented plan for his term and Chairman of INLS Board of Trustee, Mr. Hom Nath Subedi shed light on INLS vision, objectives and thanked evey one for their 11th year of continuous support to INLS.

The program was divided into three phases: formal, sports and informal. Activities such as Tribute to Bhanu, Poem recital and INLS general assembly meeting were held as part of the formal phase. Bhanu Bhakta Volleyball competition was conducted on the sports phase. Infomal singing/dancing moderated by Kaligandaki Entertainment was conducted on the informal phase.

Various Washington D.C. based poets recited their insightful and entertaining poems in the program. Mrs. Kalpana Subedi recited a poem about Bhanu Bhakta, Mr. Dig B. Tamang recited a poem and also sang a Tamang selo written by him. Mr. Prem Sangraula recited his poem which won first prize in Sharma Mudvary Poetry Award during Poetry Festival organized by INLS at the ANA convention, Philadelphia. Mr. Purushottam Subedi who won the third prize at the same competition also recited a poem. Among others, Mr. Tika Pun, Mr. Bhim Regmi, Mr. Paras Shrestha, Mr. Laxman Satyal, Mr. Indra Chantyal etc. recited their heart touching poems.

This years Bhnau Bhakta Volleyball competition was participated by eight teams namely - Nepal Youth Organization I, Nepal Youth Organization II, Sagarmatha Television, Macha Puchhre, Baltimore, Kaligandaki, Dhaulagiri and Bhanu from Virginia, Washington D.C and Maryland areas. Kaligandaki team from Woodbridge, Virginia became first by defeating the Macha Puchhre team from Baltimore, Maryland. Macha Puchhare team was the winner for last three years. Mr. Hom Nath Subedi presented Winner Certificate to the winning teams. The winners are scheduled to be presented with Bhanu Bhakta Runner Shield and Cups during this years Laxmi Jayanti Program.

The program ended with informal singing/dancing moderated by Kaligandaki Entertainment. Kaligandaki Entertainment also entertained everyone by performing a welcome folk song on the formal phase of the program.
