Nepathya :Bhedako Oon Jasto
If you were at the Film South Asia 2003 festival, you probably saw the documentary ‘Bhedako Oon Jasto- In Search of a Song’. It was about a journalist who had heard this folksong from sheep herders up in the Langtang region years back and led his musician (from Nepathya band) and film-maker friends to the song’s source in the Tamang community.

The tune became the title track on this CD. It is a gentle love song using the image of comparing snowflakes with lamb’s fleece. The Nepathya boys brought it down from the hills and blended the Himalayan melody with Deep Purple-esque rock, giving it a jamming twist. It is almost a rock version of the Tamang ‘Selo’, a typical rhythmic dance tune of the Tamang community from the northern hills. Other folk melodies from remote mountains of Dolpa, Dailekh, Tamor and Kaski have been similarly blended on this CD.

Amrit Gurung, the vocalist and bandleader who is the only founding member left 13 years after Nepathya was established, has honed his uniquely stylized Nepali folk and rock vocals. The bass and percussion stand out brilliantly and make a powerful punch - ready to make audiences roar during live shows. (Nikhil Tuladhar makes a big contribution to this with his African djembe drum.)

Nepathya is up to the mark of a good tight band session. The guitar work is very catchy and their riffs worked out nicely to fuse with the folk melodies. There are also solid keyboard accompaniments.

All in all, the melodies on Bhedako Oon Jasto are very catchy and for musicians, fun to improvise to. The CD comes with English translations of the songs, giving hints of what is present in Tamang and modern Nepali culture.

The song "Bhedako Un jasto" was sung by Dipesh Kishore Bhattarai. And the music video (with snow flakes) is filmed on Dipesh.
Are you talking about any new track from Nepathya with the same title? If yes, then I have to check it out, must be interesting.

Well, as a matter of fact, both versions (Deepesh Kishore's and Nepathya's) are covers of the same folk song. Deepesh's version is more "teeny-pop" while Nepathya's is more "folk-pop".
