I am thinking of buying a good notebook, usable for at least a couple of years, but a friend of mine, a computer gig, suggests me to wait till 64-bit things are out, he proclaims that after the 64-bits are out, the 32-ones will be obsolete like dead and that is just months ahead. Plus i dont know which one is better, athlon or pentium. Also i need to run both linux and windows . Could anyone please suggest me ? Advance thanks !

Username.. your friend lies.. 32 bits won't be out just like that. Definitely 64 bits are a plus, but you won't be getting any softwares optimized for it for a couple of years now. Most of the s/w will run great in 32 bits and I am sure you'll be able to do what you want to do in 32 bits for years to come.
If you want to buy 64 bit processor right now, you have no choice but to go with AMD Athlon 64. As for 32 bits, one is as good as the other. Athlons are usually cheaper and can handle either Linux or Windows as great as a Pentium can.

True. But Athlon 64 don't utilzie the 64bit capabilities as there is no OS to support it right now. They have 64 bit capacity but are utlizing 32bit because of the OS limitation.

If you want to wait 1-2 years (may be more for price to come down), then wait. Otherwise just get a new computer already. Dell sells it below 5 benjamins.
