“….kina Karate siknu paryo, khutta bhachna lai” My mom turned down my request for the winter break. “Hyaa! Aroo sanga karate khelni ho ta? Sikna lai po. Dui mahina k garera basne?” I tried to make my point. “La la bhare kura garumla” my mom rushed out in the usual morning mayhem.

“Babu! Khana tayar bho!” My sister shouted from the kitchen. “Ahile khadina” I retorted
back and headed towards “Chaut.” It was a beautiful winter day for a change. Fog had
cleared out drastically as the warm winter sun made its pleasing appearance. The snow
clad mountains in the north looked dazzling under the sun. Handigaon was peaceful as ever. The constant quips of the neighbors basking under the sun were the only threat to this tranquil milieu.

Tempted by the ideal setting, I lied down in “Gundri” with my back toward the sun.
I closed my eyes. Images of Sabin with various karate moves teased me for a while.
How would I take it for two months? My parents were skeptic about everything I wanted to learn and term “Karate” didn’t help my cause at all.
************
“Katti suti ra babu?” My fupu whispered to me as I lay there motionless. It was good to
be back home. The love and attention I got during holidays was simply out of this world.
Without my consent, she took some “tori ko tel” and started massaging my thick hair whose aroma soon reached my eyes. All my sisters were clustered nearby me. “Oys! Bari baata euta bhogate lyai de na!” Still massaging my head, my fupu asked me sharing a victorius smile with my sisters. Reluctantly, I agreed.

Baari looked brazen in winter. Despite the neatly lined up rows of kauli one side,
the overall view was ugly compared to the spring when colorful flowers bloomed throughout making it a wonderful playground for the butterflies and the bees. I walked across the field to the corner where two trees of “Bhogate” stood by. “Tyo hoina, mathi ko!” my fupu instructed from above as I ripped the biggest piece. As I walked back, the main metal door quirked open with its usual rustic tone and in came sneha didi accompanied by a beautiful young gal.

Sneha didi was my favourite “chimeki didi.” I raced towards her to give her an embrace.
“Oyss! Kaile aako babu?” she was equally thrilled to see me as she freed her hands to
snatch my emaciated cheeks as always. “Oyss! Yo mero aunty ko chori Shivani…….yetai
basche aaba dui char barsha” The name Shivani echoed in the air as we shared a hesitant smile followed by an awkward “HI!”
************
“La Oyss! Yeta aaija” my fupu called me and put the outer crust of the bhogate on my head in lieu of a cap which I had always cherished. “Captain Oyss” my younger sister exclaimed as everyone started digging on their favourite recipe of “sandheko bhogate” in the winter sun. I stayed far from the female crowd but taking every opportunity to steal few peeks here and there of the new gal whose name I had been humming as if to memorize it.

My heart pounded as I neared the stranger for the first time and watched her soft glowing face in the sun. As others started conversing their own stories, I courageously asked her with my fingers crossed “kati class ni timi?”. “aaba five ma jane” she smiled warming my entire body as if by magic. “timi ni?” “…aaba six ma” “Perfecto! I thought to myself.

“Oyss katti laamo parela timro…kasto cute hau!” Sneha didi started again. Everyone laughed out loud. “K ko cute hunthyo yo?” My sister refuted “kapal hera na yesko. Dumsi jasto cha” I gave her THE look. “kei chaina, raharlagdo cha ni hamro Oyss” Sneha didi came to my rescue again as I embraced her. My sister refuted “Sano ma sabbai rahar lagdo hunchan, thulo bhaye pachi Dar lagdoo hunchan!” Her ominous prophecy held firm in many years to come.

(to be contd.....)
oys_chill Posted on 05-Jan-04 01:19 PM

“Guru le ta kya godni yaar” Sabin related his horrific Karate class. “Ma ta jadina bholi dekhin, boru TT khelna jane ho Oys?” I nodded my head in immense pleasure. “Oyss ! sabin” My sister called on top of her lungs from the next room. Weather had subsided outside. We huddled in blankets sipping tea and “bhuteko makai” telling ghost stories. Suddenly, Sabin came up with an idea “Aatma bolaune ho?” It was one of the hype that was prevalent in the youngsters at the time. We had unsuccessfully tried at school too “Oyss! Page chyat ta euta” Sabin instructed.

“Sneha didi! Hajur ko result herne hai?” Sabin requested. “la la thik cha!” we were all excited. “Kasko aatma bolaune boru? She asked. “Janga Bahadur” I suggested. “Oyss! My older sister clinged to my shoulders. “Aaatma nabolam k”! She pleaded holding on to the “sai baba” necklace she had. We all agreed hesitantly. She had often given us nightmares unable to cope with certain superstitious hypes. “K garnet ta?” I asked getting slightly irritated. “Boru, roomal le ankha chopi chopi khelum!” my sister proposed.
*************
After a few listless rounds, it was my turn to be blindfolded. I waited excitedly as my
sisters tightened the blindfold around me making sure there wasn’t a ray of light getting
to my eyes. Then, they took me towards the door, swirled me around giving me a mild
dizziness and disappeared in different directions of the room.

All I could hear were eerie laughter and silent whispers. I made my way cautiously with my arms stretched forward. I bumped to the nearby couch and stumbled. I sniffed the air. I got some displeasing aroma of “Mehendi” behind me. Ahaa! I thought, must be my younger sister. She was busy preparing the recipe throughout the morning. Slowly but surely, I made my way towards the scent moving for the kill. I must have been near then as I could feel her heavy breaths under pressure. I chuckled slightly and without an alarm, I plunged forward grabbing her, shouting in joy “Makuri! Samate talain” I removed my blindfold. To my horror, it wasn’t my sister.I stood there transfixed looking at the
equally terrified face of Shivani as we both blushed awkwardly. To add to my woes, cries of sarcastic “ahem ahem” filled the air.
*********
“…..Ani kaile dekhin karate class suru?” My dad asked in a serious vein much to my surprise. “Hyaa..ma ta najane bhayen. Sabin pani najane re. boru bholi dekhin hami tt khelna jane sochi ra!” My mom was joyous. “Tyai ta, boru tyai thik cha. Boru “daddy, yeslai euta tt racket kindisyos na!” My dad gave the green signal and I jumped in joy. I hurried outside to recount my pleasure by the fire my sisters had tarted in the Bari.

As I neared the bonfire filled with laugher and songs, I saw Shivani glowing beyond the lit fire like a divine goddess. I couldn’t wait another year to get done with Hostel. She noticed me coming and welcome me with her radiant smile. “Oyss yeta aau” Sneha didi called me. I found myself beside Shivani once again. We looked at each other briefly and extended our arms towards the fire. Our shoulders brushed each other. I felt a tingling sensation encompass me. Winter couldn’t have started on a better note. It was the warmest winter by far..............................

Captain Oys,
Ekdam purana din haru ko yad dilayo timro katha le. Very nice one. I feel like my new year being freshed up with this fine piece of story....Oh, basking under sun and massaging 'kapal' with 'tori ko tel' by lying down in Gundri, and eating "sandheko amilo/bhuteko makai" are few to name that we have missed much here...la Oys lai rookh chadhna aunchha ho?

Ani bro sanga karate ta hoina tt khelna pakkai aunu parla teha. Oys the kya eklo chhora jasto sabai ko pyaro. Tes mathi hostel bata jado ko chhutti manauna ghar aye pachhi ta kasto hai hai sabai ko....woripari mamu, fufu, ghar ki didi, sneha didi, chhimeki didi, ani chimeki didi ko aunti ko chhori Shivani, ani makuri pani...ehehe Didi might be true saying “Sano ma sabbai rahar lagdo hunchan, thulo bhaye pachi Dar lagdoo hunchan!” ...ho ni ta...tes mathi Simha rashi ko ho bhane ta bho kurai nagaram.

Oys, Splendid!

I am sorry to barge in, but I thought 'makure dulo' would be a tasteless pun to Kalankistan. Or did I lose my sense of humor ?
Bhunte Posted on 06-Jan-04 05:26 PM

nepe, so far i remember from previous memory lane i believe you don't believe on bhut, pret, devi, dewata, etc. Lau aja kasari kalanki mata jyu ko asirbad ko lagi line ma basnu bhayeko ....ali jod le ghanti bajaunu paryo mata bhagwati le sunne gari....he he. No, you didn't lose sense of humour. Ankhir ma there is a character called makuri as well in the above story if you use a lab microscope....tesaile makure dulo bhannu annyukti nahola yes sandarva ma....
Nepe Posted on 06-Jan-04 07:20 PM

Bhunteji,
My bad. I thought the infamous 'maakure dulo' of Saddam Mahasaya was the sandarbha. Had it been for the individuals who have shown affinity to our own home grown Saddam wannabe, I would think how apt Bhunte ji is to choose the phrase. But for Kalanki, I thought the phrase was a poor choice. Hence my drishtata. And yes, I do care about Kalanki. But so do I about you. Don't I ?
