I would like to request of ANMA, ANA, and all the Nepali organization in the US and around the world that during their general convention in 2004, stress that people wear Nepali traditional dresses to the convention. Let's eat Nepali traditionla food, and lets watch Nepali traditional cultural shows. Stop these "fusion" showmaroocks!!

What do you guys think?

Yes, you are right. I agree. Wearing nepali dresses can give us real feeling of the nepalese convention. Which is same as, eating nepali food with hand rather than chamcha and kanta(spoons and forks).
DP Posted on 05-Jan-04 05:48 PM

But, it should come all from the heart.Just "requiring" these things won't help.
luckydude Posted on 05-Jan-04 07:38 PM

yeah, that's true. Some Nepalese living abroad may not want to wear "Traditional Nepalese Dress" as they think they are pretty modern. I would say let them wear whatever they want. If they are proud to be Nepalese, they will wear Traditional Nepalese Dress.

Peace in Nepal

KALANKiSTHAN Posted on 05-Jan-04 09:37 PM

oh,
I don't have it, and I can't wear it in any conventions.
No I can't import it from Nepal, and I know "where there is a will, there is a way", but I don't think there is any way I can import it from Nepal... But hey, I am still Nepali .. Take it or Fake it... and I promise, I won't get drunk and get ready for brawls even if I am not wearing traditional dresses. hmmm... and yes, I don't feel or think I am modern... I am what I am... I won't be non-Nepali if I don't wear traditional dresses in conventions. Ghumi Feri kuro uhi! :P
Happy 2004.

Ta thikai chha jun luga lagay pani huncha. Baru, kamti ma convention ma Nepali sabdaharu matrai bolne ho ki?
Biswo Posted on 06-Jan-04 01:50 AM

Innocuous this proposal may sound, it is not good for several reasons.

1. What is Nepalese national dress?

Let's be reasonable. Quite a few Teraibasis don't think Daura/Suruwal etc are something they are comfortable with. Now, of course, we are not Jigme Singhe Wangchuk. We can't ask them to wear what we want to wear ourselves.

2. Yet another rule ?

Imposing such rules will only divide ourselves. We will unreasonably sneer at the fellow Nepalese coming in three piece suit because we will feel the guy is 'overly' westernized. On the other hand, the fella may be showing up in the three piece suit because he , like yours truly, doesn't have one 'Nepali Dress' in his closet in USA. And the last thing we need is yet another pretext to divide ourselves.

Individuals are free to wear what they want to wear, or campaign among like-minded people to appear in some particular cloth even in the current settings of our conventions. To me, Nepal looks more beautiful in her diversity. Trust me, We will look more beautiful when we don't fake ourselves to provide the impression of sartorial homogeneity.

insisting upon a "tradition" has no merit in the Nepali context. in fact, it will only create divisions unforeseen.

divdude Posted on 06-Jan-04 04:48 AM

Guys I think I would be really happy if
people would end the party without having a fight
or having some kinda row. Every time I go
to party I find all the Nepalese confusing themselves
between a Nepali and a Bideshi, always stuck in
some kind of "fosro ghamanda" ,and whenever they
find a weaker opposition they without exception
tend to get aggressive or at least behave superior.
Wherever we are we should never forget that we
are Nepali and should respect our fellow people,
clothing habit or food customs dont matter much if
we have a true Nepali heart.
Bilbo Baggins Posted on 06-Jan-04 11:47 AM

Ok guys... I said "stress" not "required". The human psychology is so that even if you state as traditional dresses (including terai, pahadi, newari, etc) being "optional" people will tend to were traditional clothings.

What we all have to realize is that the conventions are "family" events where all age groups are present. Even in modern western society there is a proper way to dress at the bar and proper way to dress at a family banquet and events. We just need to keep that in mind.

so i happened to come accross this thread...

So everyone plannin on wearing daura suruwaal in ANA 2004?
as101 Posted on 18-Apr-04 07:56 AM

Dum ass people why in the hell we all have to wear nepali dress and eat nepali food to be Nepali. If you love nepal and want to help just be there and supportive.
luckydude Posted on 18-Apr-04 08:37 AM

Where and when is this convention anyways? Can someone help me here?

As far as Nepalese people having "fosro ghamanda" goes, most Nepalese people living abroad have it, especiall those who have green cards (not all of them, but definitely most of them). I don't go to any Nepalese parties here in America because nothing special happens anyways. So, why bother going there and spending time. I would rather stay home and try to fix my broken C# code.

Baru pachi Nepal gaye pachi nai Dashain ra Tihar manaula.
