Hey everybody:

I am relatively new to this site and have only been using the chat feature. Interestingly, I have encountered a vast variety of people...some quite pleasant and others not so. Unfortunately, among the unpleasant ones that I have stumbled into, I have sensed a great animosity in them. An Animosity that contains lethal, negative misconceptions about the nepalis from Darjeeling and I have found that I have almost, always had to defend myself just coz I am from Darjeeling.

Prior to visiting this site, I was of the opinion that "All" Nepalese are the "Same"--whether you are from Dhankuta or from Darjeeling, I believed we were under the same cultural umbrella. We share the same heritage that binds most people. We speak the same language---for the most part :). Our tastes and religious orientations are the same and the most important part is that, we are indeed nepalis, just separated by some geographical boundaries.

So my question to you guys is: What are your general sentiments about "Darjeelingeys" as we like to call ourselves. Are we brothers and sisters on either side of the fence? Or is Sagarmatha so high, that it acts as a great barrier to its own kindred??

Curious to know your responses. As always your friend: Dazzling ko Keti

Miss Daz...
We're the same, separated by political and geographical boundries. And anybody who doesn't eccept this, he/she is a desh drohi.
Bhrikuti Posted on 06-Jan-04 07:06 PM

It was nice chatting with you and you are a very pleasant person. We share similar experiences, culture and heritage. And don't be bothered by people who express animosity toward you. It is their loss, not getting to know you better as a person.
Poonte Posted on 07-Jan-04 01:18 PM

Just a few weeks ago, I came across a new friend -- a Nepali from Bhutan. Not knowing how much Nepali he spoke (thanks to my ignorance!), I initially talked to him in English. I didn't realize that I was continuously talking to him in English, while he responded in pakka Nepali, until he exclaimed, "Kya ho, Poonte-jyu le ta America ayera Nepali birsanu bhayo jasto chha ni?" I was embarrassed.

Belonging to a minority group in a foreign land, I think the Nepalis from Darjeeling and Bhutan have developed an acute sense of Nepalipan that the Nepalis living in Nepal proper has yet to realize as significant. From my encounters with the Nepalis from Darjeeling and Bhutan, albeit limited, I've come to gather that they give highest reverence to being a Nepali that we Nepalis living in "proper Nepal" normally take for granted.

Unfortunately, some of us (Nepalis from within the Nepali state) find it rather easy to target the "Darjeelingeys" to vent our frustrations arising from our own inadequacies. Sometimes it's the "Dajeelingeys" or the "Chhayattareys"; other times it's the "Madsyas," etc. What some of us need to realize is that the real power to overcome our inadequacies comes not from the discriminations that we create based on the boundaries of Nepali state, but rather it comes from the sense of one-ness, a sense of unity, that emerges from the feeling of belonging to a Nepali nation. Afterall, boundaries are artificial -- they were created by humans -- what is NOT artificial, hence what is all the more powerful is a feeling of belonging to a Nepali nationhood.

Finally, as Bhrikuti has correctly put it, dazzling ko keti, it is the loss of those who choose not to know you as a person, and discriminate against you just because of where you are from.

"Jaso gara, je bhana, jata sukai laijau malai...yo man ta mero NEPALI ho!"

"..whether you are from Dhankuta or from Darjeeling, I believed we were under the same cultural umbrella. We share the same heritage that binds most people. We speak the same language---for the most part :). ..."

You got it. I share your sentiment. Of course, you should not expect every Nepali to say "I love all Darjelinges" so don't be discouraged by negative sentiment someone expresses toward darjeling/people.

We are what/who we are not what/who some chatures/suntalis say.

Wow people, I have to admit I am highly taken aback by the overwhelming number of positive responses. It sure is an affirmation, that the unpleasant exchanges I have had so far, are indeed in the minortiy and that they aren't an accurate reflection of the existing general sentiments towards Darjeelingeys.

Am I right in saying-----We are "One" and ever shall be!!!
ou812 Posted on 07-Jan-04 06:45 PM

Few months back I had a general chit chat with a Sardar Librarian (Suprisingly, they do exist). Of course Nepal, the land of Mt Everest, Manisha Koirala(Soni Kudi) and Royal Palace Massacare. So far so good. But poor Sardar Ji made one cardinal mistake. i.e Nepal was part of India.........

Tuppi bata dhuwa, kanchat tattiyo and steam from ears. Poor Sardar Ji received lecture on Indian History (Whatever I could recollect from my ICSE syllabus). A similar incident occoured last weekend when a friend from Darj jokingly mentioned that Nepal was part of India. He got an earfull anyway. :o)

Darjeelingaes too weild that animosity stick my dear DJ ko Keti. A prime xample "Timarko Nepal keta harule ui Teen jana bihae harcha re ho?" Ani "You guys still chant Hamro Raja Hatti ma" and still "Nepal ko Manche haru... (with a scowl)". However the animosity largely emanates from ignorance, which Poote has elucidated perfectly. AMEN!!

But hey!! Look on the bright side. This is SAJHALAND the most democratic land of all. Nothing else matters, if you capture the heart and mind of reader.

P.s If you fancy visiting a fantastic site then here you go http://darjeelingnews.net/

Lalupate you got the facts wrong mate. India was actually part of Nepal :o) Let open Koshi and flood northern India, then we will have access to Bay of Bengal on our door steps. Port Kakarbhitta, Port Jogbani etc sounds promising hai? Besides I am sure Indian Central Govt wouldn,t mind getting rid of Bihar and Commie Bengal. Imagine sailing a Yacht or rafting (for adventrous ones )all the way down to Bay of Bengal from Trishuli.........
dazzling ko keti Posted on 07-Jan-04 07:28 PM

Ou812, let me begin by saying that you have a right to your opinions, however generalized they may be. Then too, it is unfortunate that you have chosen to uphold your negative opinions about Darjeeling/geys based on some ignorant comments.

It is indeed naiive and inexcusible to state that Nepal was a part of India(coz it never was) but at the same time, it is equally futile to argue who would be the benefactor/looser were the floodgates Kosi opened up.

Just coz you and I, have rubbed shoulders with people who have made unflattering comments about Nepal/Darjeeling, does not entitle either "YOU" or "Me" to categorize the whole region and its people in a negaitve light.

Oh & thanks for the info on Djnet. You got it brother----I am already a member there, An active one if i might add!!!

Hawaldaar Kattu, thanks for the colorful depiction of your thoughts on Nepal/India and Darjeeling. I take it from your anecdote, that Nepal does look upon Darjeeling with much fondness....

Mailo.....your expericence is rather unfortunate, then too which country can you point out on the globe that does not tend to over milk tourist revenues and when its S.E Asia in question, I guess its kinda expected. Its not so much a question of brothers trying to dupe each other----Its just the nature of the beast.

In conclusion, incase some of you have mistook the intention of my original post, I just want to reiterate that, this is not a "Plea to love Darjeelingeys", neither is this your one time opportunity to pour out personal vendettas----Its just an open and honest question seeking honest opinions.

Keep it rolling people!!!
