Could anyone help me to digest the following news: Is RNA a profit center or self regulated governmental authority who sells it's services for a fee? Do they bill the King for providing security to the palace? Who will be the next to receive a bill from the Army (or Police), all the houshold in the Kingdom? If there has to be any billing for services provided by the RNA then why it is not being done by the Ministry of Defence? Are they "a State within the State"? 'RNA demands Rs. 560m from NEA' Royal Nepal Army (RNA) has demanded Rs.560 million from Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for providing security to powerhouses and sub-stations, the Kathmandu Post said Friday, quoting NEA sources. The amount has been demanded to meet the additional human resource requirement for providing security for a year, the daily said, adding, the demand comes during a time when NEA has already been facing a severe financial crunch. "The amount has been demanded to provide security to 20 electricity installations, including major infrastructures like Kali Gandaki, Marsyangdi, Trishuli and Kulekhani, among others." "According to RNA, 1980 soldiers would be necessary to secure the 20 vital installations at 56 different locations. The NEA's proposal is being forwarded to NEA board." RNA had earlier demanded Rs.530 million to secure 34 installations, the daily said, adding NEA then had formally expressed its inability to bear the costs suggesting to protect only 20 installations. |

Prajesh ji, I was also thinking in similar vein as yours when i read the news. RNA should take care of the security of whole nation no matter what it cost to the nation from its fiscal spending, but not to knock down door to door of each part and parcel they care for. RNA can bill if it is a private security agency. If NEA is billed, there r many others who might be billed as well. Is that is par for the course with other countries in similar cases? |

I was also thinking about this. Isn't it a blackmail? What's RNA saying here is 'give us 56 crore or WE WILL LET THE MAOISTS DESTROY THE PLANTS'? Guess who used to do that in the wild west? The rowdiest bunches. The mind of our military brass is so impermeable, it is difficult to understand what the heck they are thinking now? Add to it the report of the ravishing of the unarmed, civilian women in the villages that are getting published in media these days, and we are left to wonder about the state of the nation. Hope these people will wise up. If NEA actually pays for that protection, and is forced to raise the electric charge, people will be more agonized and anti-government, and subsequently other extremists will gain. |
