Technically, all you need is the I-20 and the statement from your bank showing that you can, actually, pay for all the expenses while living in the U.S. But additional documents will help you get your student visa. Since sept. 11 2001, it has become harder for students to get a visa, so you must convince them that you will return to your country as soon as you complete your studies.. Here is the list of the things that will help you get your visa: 1. Proof to return to your country (I guess you are from Nepal and Nepalese people don't go back to Nepal for various reasons, so you must assure them that you will, in fact, return to your country. For example, if you are married, then you can say that your spouse lives in Nepal and you must return. Other ways would be, if you are being offered a job after you get the degree, you can show the document) 2. If you have been a member of some clubs or organizations, tell them to write letters for you stating how wonderful and active member you have been. 3. If you own any property or business, make documents and tell them that you own something in Nepal and you must return to Nepal. Remember, the most important part is to convince them that you WILL return to Nepal. The rest are not that important. Another thing is that you will not get more than 4-5 minutes to talk to the embassy people. During that period, you must show them all of your documents, but DOCUMENTS DON'T MEAN NOTHING BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT LOOK AT IT. Peace in Nepal luckydude

Luckydude is right. The main thing is that you need to convince them that you will go back to Nepal once you are done with your studies(I know you won't go back. But now, you think you will go back......). DP.

Thanks "Luckudude", actually my friend was recently rejected by US embassy on the same ground, like they believe that he will not come back to Nepal. So I am also afraid about it, and I know it is very hard to prove that some one will come back, and this give excuse for US embassy to reject visa, and further more visa charge now adays is US$ 100/- which is not some thing joke, for country like us, to apply again and again and get rejected.

I know how hard it is to be rejected from the embassy. I was denied twice before I got my "student visa". It took me 7 months to get a visa. One thing that I have learned from them is not to leave anything until you get it. "Try try until you die." Gong back to money that the U.S. embassy charges you, it's really expensive. They are just crazy. It used to be only $45.00 and now it's $100.00. It's total insane. If you want to come to the U.S., you must try. I know you are afraid of being denied but I guarantee that you will learn something from them, like how they take your interview. Believe it or not, the third time I went there, I pretty much knew what I was supposed to do and was pretty confident. Good Luck. Peace in Nepal luckydude

Good advice once again 'Luckdude' and lots of word for encouragement. After hearing it seems that everybody has to struggle at least two-three times before you get through. By the way at the moment I am staying outside Nepal, do you think it is good to apply for US visa from Nepal or from outside where you are now? Does it matter?

I have no idea how the process goes if you apply for the visa from other countries. I am sure they will take it in the same way since you are a citizen of Nepal. I am sure our "Visa gurus" in this message board know more about this. Peace in Nepal luckydude

ask me, U gonna apply for UG, Masters or Ph.D.??? If it is for Ph.D., and u r residing in another country, the CHANCES of getting acceptance is higher (at least for F-1). Even if not, don worry..... Luckydude has stronger points, follow his instructions. Wish u cud get done with that. Gud luck :)

Is it only $100 to apply for US visa? I thought I paid more like $300 (which was in 2002). But the good news is, they give visa for 5 years.

If you are applying for masters, then you have much higher chance than UG. You will certainly get it if you have some kind of assistanceship from school... You need to convince them that you will be studying, you have enough money and at some point you need to be a good lier telling them that you will return to Nepal.

I agree with 'Thaag', I have got a nice assistanceship, and I have enough money also, but only problem lie is that how to convince them, that I will come back, which give them reason to reject. Anyway I also believe that some what depend on the LUCK too and their MOOD too on that particular day. I feel since visa interview is short and fast, they make decision very quickly which is not accurate but more of luck, also I feel that they are bias to some nations, as I am staying outside Nepal.

Just like "thaag" says, you have a greater chance of getting visa. Most students who come to the US, come for Undergrad and it's always hard to get a visa. Since, you are coming here for Masters degree, I don't see any problem there. Just give it a try.... Just gather all the necessary documents that I told you before and apply for it. I wish you good luck and by the way, in which state are you planning to study? peace in Nepal luckydude
