Hi all, In my real full-time job, I am assisting a private-sector client to set up franchises of his 7-year-old Kathmandu-based service business in selected four towns across Nepal. My client and I have a few ideas of our own, but -- not being pukka franchise experts ourselves -- we feel that we need to be rigorously challenged, and thus need a more professional guidance as to how to go about setting up commercially-winning franchises. Does anyone here on Sajha know of any franchise expert based in India or surrounding regions? This expert would be someone willing to spend a few days with us in Kathmandu or Pokhara to help us hammer out and critique our ideas and help us develop franeworks so that one major end-result would be that franchises end up being commercially viable propositions. Obviously, there would be compensations for the consultancy rendered. Please email me if you or anyone you know people who can possibly help/work with us on this matter -- or point us to resources on the Web that we can dig into. Thanks. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Ashu I am glad you asked about Socrates. He is not as bad as he used to be before. But funny it may sound, instead of knowledge he talks about knowledge management these days. And management from Socrates!! Ha ha ha. That's why I have to take care of him as a Xanthippe. You know very well that. Keep updating about your franchise movement.

Hello Bunjee jumping Thado Tupi Guru, I am your Master Franchise Guru. I am that I am in mischief as always. But who, what, when, how, where and why franchise ? So you want creative destruction and have value creation for sustainable development innovation. Okay ! First thing you do is legally patent your intellectual property in the region. Find out and agree about arbritration in case of legal or performance or other disputes. The basis of you being the franchisor and giving value proposition to your franchisees are dependent on your brand equity and salience. In other words, you must be a very reputable and first rate business. Your brand reputaion must be so tuned in with the positioned and targeted consumers that what ever segments they might be, these consumers will be attarcted by the low risk in their decision making in terms of saving time, and they trust you for your high quality product and services, they will like the value for money, convinience and much more. You must have standard procedures and processes to maintain service delivery like McDonald Burgers are almost the same like all over the world. Ambience, staff attitudes, machinery and other support functions must delivery the same output with minimal input all over. Productivity levels should be also the same all over. In other words, standardisation replication of your original business must be replicated all over. However, in some cultures and due to political and legal or technological considerations your standardisation need to be adapted like McDonald sell halal meat in burgers in Muslim countries. Your franchisees are basically their own boss and pay you a 3 to 5 percent of commission out of their total sales turnover for using your success formula. You will have to support them centrally to maintain the agreed formula, provide marketing communication support, staff training and development, product and service development and testing and much more. I hope Jadugar baje will understand ala Mcburger University system of USA and home in their website. Rest Maha baje choice is yours which path to profit you want to take. Good luck. Innovation = Understanding + Observation + Visualisation + Evaluation + Refinement + Implemantation. Have sustainable development ties in for maintaining sustainable competitive advantage over the competition. Innovation leads you above other categories and you become first to the market to become category captain and capture the majority market share.

It seems USA franchisors patent every thing under the sun to gain sustainable advantage over competition. What machines they use, who their suppliers are and much more. On this basis the value chain link is almost impossible to imitate goes the theory upto a point in time...thus innovation innovation innovation is required al the time upstream and down stream, be it through vertical or horizontal integration etc.....

Franchising is an alternative path for foreign market entry strategy under international marketig discourse and I am the expert. There are two types of franchising being master franchising and licensing. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages. To go to foreign markets, where political environment is unstable then the franchisor using this system gets money via commission and does not take full risk of own capital investment. Read on international stratgies to foreign market entry. I mean an economic discourse student wanna be business consultant does not make sense without proper vocational and professional development immersion. They need be in proper theorries in international business discourse and subdiscourses in international marketing, eCommerce, international trade policy and much much more. This Thado Tupi self stylelegendary brand of Nepal lacks any management and business experience and comprehensive knowledge. I would not chose him to give my franchise to him as he has failed to show me such refined and successful leadership and entrepreneurial qualities. Apart to claim that he is a Harvard returnee and only doing sychophancy promotions al Nepali traditional baje way. Alas, leopards never change their spots. Waldo Emmerson once said "weak men depend on luck. Strong men depend on cause and effect." Go and get immersed in multi discipline of economics, cross cultural management, global marketing and much much more and I will taech you one on one then how to make lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. In the mean time go and fly a kite.
