I have been invited to do a presentation on art and music appreciation at undergraduate level. The instructor wants obviously want me because of my asian (different) background. Do you guys have any suggestions and materials I might be able to use. This is a showcase event which will hopefully mould the outlook of those students in a positive way.

For music you might take audio samples representing various genres of south asian music - classical, folk and pop. Elaborate on the connection between the three, focusing on how new musicians are innovating based on traditional influences... not only south asian musicians but western ones. south asian classical music tradition is so rich and closely tied to regional history and culture and religion. depending on the time you have for the presentation you can do a lot. you might talk about the place of music in religion for example... someone like Girija Devi would cover both classical and bhakti music, if you can get hold of a CD, Surely the students will know Ravis shankar and the beatles, but more recently the whole bhangra (which is more folk) and the popularity of sufi music is also intersting and will probably draw the students in. This is also interesting as it sheds light on the Indian diaspora and how music helps redefine identity in new political and cultural contexts. good luck. hope its fun.
