thursday, january 29 2004, is probably the day that has seen the worst of nepal's media corporate rivalry out in the public. only days after the himalayan times slashed its newsstand price to Rs. 1 in lieu of the kathmandu post's Rs. 1.50 paisa from Rs. 4, the media-side that claims to be totally nepali has heightened its anti-india media investment drive.
today, almost all major nepali dailies have taken out a full page color add lashing out against the himalayan times and charging it of foreign investment along with publishing an anti-nepal report. the article under consideration has reported an indian researcher who claims that buddha was born in orissa, india.
i had read the article a long time back so am not in a position to analyse it here immediately. (ashu, i'd be interested to go through it if you could post a copy here.)
but what i fear most is that the charges could instigate a riot among the laato gorkhali mass. already students in places have burnt copies of the himalayan times.
at this juncture, i request that the cartel group of publishers under the name of nepal media society (including kantipur, samacharpatra, rajdhani and himalaya times) to act more responsibily and pressure the government instead to settle the matter rather than push each other against the wall in public. settle it among yourselves... why do we have to see your undies down in public!
in my personal opinion, it is also wrong if the himalayan times has ventured out on an indian government funding. hence, they should also make, for once and for all, their investors more transparent. why not, the nepal media society set a good example by making their investors more transparent too... just a thought.
if it's clearly indian government investment, then it shoud go. invest in india itself just like the nepal one tv channel.
