Grunge was hip back in 90's. It reached its height with Seattle super rock groups Pearl Jam And Nirvana. But there seems to be arguement about which one's better even till this date. I am sure there are thousands of nepalese like me who grew up listening these two phenomenal bands. what do you think my friends..
DWI Posted on 31-Jan-04 02:35 PM

Wow,
it's been a while.

Nice comparison. I personally think Kurt Cobain was more talented than Eddie Veddar.
Nirvana got better with age, with it's best one being NEVERMIND.
TEN was the first(commercial) and best album Pearl Jam produced. VS was good and VITALOGY was okay. After that, I think they kinda lost their touch (with Binaural, No Code, Riot Act).

Having said that, there is one song that will always keep Pearl Jam over Nirvana, atleast in my mind: JEREMY. Great lyrics, Well sung (didja hear Creed?) and well picturised (Pearl Jam hardly video-ed their songs, except for the live concerts).
Robert Frost Posted on 31-Jan-04 03:09 PM

It was Pearl Jam until Nirvana produced that thrilling album Nevermind, on came Teen Spirit. They immediately went on top and from then, it was history. The death of Kurt so early in his overwhelming career, did sideline the band a lot but when they were at this full stage, there was no beating Nirvana.

Pearl Jam was certainly not before NIRVANA. Although both of their first big hit albums were released around same time (1990 or 1991), NIRVANA was formed before Pearl Jam, and NIRVANA was the first band to popularize the GRUNGE revolution. Besides, NIRVANA already had BLEACH (without drummer Dave Groehl) to their credit, released even before Pearl Jam was formed.

As for me, I switched to listening Pearl Jam after the death of Cobain, which saturated the fan base of NIRVANA (non alternate listeners also started digging them).

i opine....
nirvana is a junkie life glamorized
pearl jam is a anti-sociality overdone
nirvana is a mindless good rocking
pearl jam is intelligent writing
nirvana is a teen spirit
pearl jam is a wishlist
nirvana rocks pearl jam rocks
both feed pained souls
i guess thats what grunge is all about
judging and comparing art would be a stupidity
they're there to savour
both are legends with one hell of a cult following behind each of them
both ROCK!! the way they do and like nobody else

:)
Trikal Posted on 31-Jan-04 06:59 PM

I think Pearljam and nirvana, They have their own intellectual growth and discovery clearly demonstrates the Need for unfettered freedom, the right to think the unthinkable. ..........What do you think ?

Trikal..

how about..... they all suck!!!!
garibmaila Posted on 01-Feb-04 05:51 AM

as far as i know, there were 3 great seatle rockers, nirvana, pearl jam, and sound garden! but i think all 3 of them were a genre a music in themselves! kobain was my idol during highschool, but pearl jam are certainly the more intelligent rockers! chris cornell`s music is darker than the other 2s!
but if u say grunge, then it`s nirvana without any question! pearl jam are the musically talented ones. nirvana didnt have a fusion like long road and face of love!
my fav band are Iron Maiden, btw!! hehe!
kurtsgal Posted on 01-Feb-04 06:15 PM

"judging and comparing art would be a stupidity" right said Oleg Polanski but yet i have to compare it would definetely be Nirvana ...Nirvana had its own flow the kind of music and songs they were all bang!!!! but i guess pearl jam did have some meaningful songs compared to NIrvana...
Oleg Polanski Posted on 01-Feb-04 09:34 PM

Talking about dark grunge, can nobody get any darker than Alice in Chains. For some reason, AIC did not get as much of an attention as the rest of them did, probably due to their AWOL. even Layne's demise which was so similar to kurt's passed by rather silently. anyways, Layne's depressed articulation and jerry's woesome music darker than anyone else in a long long time.
and if i'm not mistaken this thread has also been discussing who started the grunge first. neither nirvana nor pearl jam. from what i've learnt, mudhoney put nirvana in flannel and turned seattle into rock city. they are the pioneers all the way.
acharya Posted on 01-Feb-04 10:26 PM

Man..i wish i had grown up with Nirvana and Pearl Jam rather than nepali lok geets..

I am happy that many people are entusiastic about the GRunge mUsic and its two of the most enchanted horses. Though there are few well recognized bands who had played their roles in bringing Grunge (sub-pop) into light None had made it more popular than Nirvana. The credit to the origin of this overwhelmly popular class of mUsic goes to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana.Yet over the years Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Alice In CHains (I doubt they are a true Grunge band) and few others had made it more well known. Each of us can pick our own favorites here but the truth is Nirvana and Kurt Cobain had made their place in the History BOOk of Music as one of the Greatest Band of all times and a performer too. 'Nevermind' broke the record of Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" by selling over 100 million copies (Dangerous '70 Million'). So, the record itself shows about the fantasies of this small Seattle Based band. One can only wish 'Kurt' lived longer. With the tragic death of Kurt, the once most popular music 'Grunge' started fading away. And, no band till date has been able to make it become more popular than it was during the times of Nrivana and Kurt Cobain (early 90s). So, it's not a matter of which band is better?? It's about who made the Music "Grunge" more popular?? In this Regard 'Nirvana' will be second to none.

I do question about the topic 'Nirvana' Vs. 'Pearl Jam'. They are both amongst the most celebrated bands of all times. Even so, the fact is they were both like the workhorses along with few others, who worked together (at the same time) in order to spread the new class of music to all the music fans around the world. They were not the rivalries but intimate compatriots playing Grunge in the best manner possible withought even realizing it might be the music of the New generation. I would rather use Nirvana and Pearl Jam instead of Nrivana Vs Pearl Jam and talk about their efforts. However, I have nothing against the Author of thie later Topic. It's about ideas. I just think it is a less important thing to compare these two great bands. Having said that it still is about 'Perspectives.'

Long Live 'GRUNGE'
THe Legends will always ROck

PRoud To be a Grunge Fan.

I was a die hard Nivana fan until I started listening to Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder's lyrical Prowess took grunge to a whole different level. Not that Nirvana was no less but kurt's song writing can not match with Eddie's story telling rock anthems. I had a rare chance to see Pearl Jam's live concert last year and Eddie has not lost his magical vocal yet. I read somewhere that Pearl Jam is one of the most copied band of of all time. People wanted to see so much of Pearl Jam but their insistence of media obscurity (especially MTV), bands like Creed, Candle light, and Bush could attained commercial success. Pearl Jam might not be big commercial wise anymore but thier song writing are as effective as it was 13 or 14 years ago. >>"I know someday you will have a beautiful life, I know you will be the Sun..in somebody else's sky But why why why..it can not it be mine" >> (Black)
You can actually relate pain Eddie put on his songs to yourself.

Seems like we all forgot Stone Temple Pilots somewhere between Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

>> "Leaving on a southern train only yesterday you lied, promises of what I seemed to be only watched the time go by, all of these things you said to me">>> (Interstate Love Song). Scott Weiland can put up words no less than Vedder or Cobain.

Oleg Polanski,

The darker side of it all, Alice in Chains, you hit it. I listened to their music pretty late then I did to Pearl Jam and Nirvana and you bet they rock just as good. I was specially impressed with their MTV Unplugged. The way they sang this popular song "Would", it was a phenomenal performance and a song to remember for a very long time to come. Their music is different then all others and it just seems like they hit the wrong chord with a sound tune. With singles like "Rooster", "Down in a hole" and "Heaven beside you" AIC rock damn good.

garibmaila Posted on 10-Feb-04 02:23 AM

yeah alice in chains are the darkest, i agree! i think that`s also the reason they didnt get as much popularity as nirvana and pearl jam got!
yeah interstate love song, and creep, that`s one of the bests STP came up with!
i am not half a man i used to be..............
