I was reading this article by Dipak Gyawali last week in Nepali Times. This man had a remarkable turnaround in a year. Just before he was handpicked to be a minister, he was decrying 'politics of exclusion' (implying that political parties who refused to share power with the Maoists made the Maoists grow. Now I don't know in which country you share power with the extreme left with no seat in parliament, but that's another story). Now the title of his article was 'putting kleptoholic[sic] and arsonists in power would be real regression.' He again and again quoted his father as a model. Obviously, no one would buy that his father, who was a pawn of Mahendra to bring dreaded Panchayati constitution, was a model for anyone in Nepal except for himself.

The reason I am quoting Gyawali now is because his ilks are supposed to be the advisor of the king. Now, the king has made clear that he is not ready to share the power. He is going to run the nation in jamindaari way. What are the rest of the people to do? Cave in? Or confront?

If you don't have election, and king's men are saying they are not going to share the power, what are these political parties supposed to do? They are not wearing the bangles in their wrists. They have responsiblity towards the people that they lead.Their people are killed in broad daylight by the Maoists and the army. They have to do something.

I don't like the protests. But what are other exits? Have anyone given any exits to the masses of Nepal? How are political parties going to show they have popular support? Gyanendra is not planning for any election, let's have no doubt about this. Even if he is ever to stage any election, he has made sure that his stooge is in Election commission chairmanship. What we are seeing now is systematic gradual hijacking of popular right. To focus exclusively in the "number" of protests is,hence, myopic, and a way to blur the major issue at the hand.It is not even clear what are you trying to accomplish by enlisting them here. If it is for public awareness about the possible inconvenience they may face at the street, it is a praiseworthy attempt. Otherwise, it makes sense for all of us to pressure the unpopular king to go to constitutional assembly under the supervision of international bodies and put this matter at the hand of people. All these bloods/protests etc are happening because of him. His corrupt lifestyles are fueling public anger, and let's face it, public are not just sighing and moving on. They are actively and passively supporting any movement against the king.

Yes, that's what it is.

I basically copied and pasted the contents of an email I received, thinking that others in and out of Nepal would like to know "the protest taalika" for their own purposes.

Other than that, people are free to reach their own conclusions as to how and why these protests and bandhs are taking place.
